DP-wise, I think Matthew Libatique did a very good job. It was Bruckheimer-esque but not to the extreme (as Amir Mokri's work with Bay in Bad Boys 2). But there wasn't really a lot of camera wizardry and when there was (the scene with Stark and Stane on the couch) it wasn't particularly cool. I did like in-suit shots of Stark.

There really wasn't a huge centerpiece for action and the final act was executed pretty poorly, from an action choreography standpoint.

But just like kick-ass fight scenes don't make a movie, merely serviceable ones aren't going to make Iron Man a bad movie. It looks like from your overall review/rating, you agree with that.

I also loved the one liner when Stan Lee got his shot.

I thought i saw Tom Morello from Rage Against the Machine as one of the Afghan fighters in the cave, he was the first one to die.

That's the first thing my friend and I checked during the credits. It's him.

He's Nick Fury.

I guess you never played Marvel Ultimate Alliance.

Yeah, right. All the trades were predicting a 60-70 million dollar opening and Favreau and Downey thought it would only play to geeks? No, they wanted to be treated like rock stars.

I read up on him, I just didn't physically see him in the movie Didn't stay for the credits, so that's why I missed him.

Yeah, I don't plan to stay after the credits. After being suckered into doing that once for POTC2 - never again.

I love Nick Fury but not that much.

Here's a great review, from a true guru of comics, over at Scott Tipton's Comics 101 website.

If anyone missed the after-credits bit (like I did), it is up on YouTube:

Yeah, in the credits he also punches up some guitar rifs. But I have to question life when Tom gets left in but Ghostface killer gets cut?

Tony has this magnetic thing in his chest to stop the shrapnel from going to his heart. Ok, a third-world kludge to save your butt. Once back in the US, why didn't he have the shrapnel surgically removed? This may have made sense given the state of medicine when Iron Man was first created, but now it's just stupid. Modern medicine is pretty good, and the film mentioned Stark's medical tech, so they should be even better than the real world.

Finally got to see it last night. Loved it. Loved RDJ. Loved all of the little nods to the comic fan. I'm not the biggest Iron Man reader, but I think I will start now. The character is so multi-layered and cool. The movie flew by, I looked at my phone and was shocked to see that over an hour and a half had already gone by. My top 5 superhero movies now look like this:

1.X2
2.Batman Begins
3.Spider-Man 2
4.Iron Man
5.Daredevil Director's Cut

Star Wars references?

Loved the movie.
Now, am I geeking out too much here, or did I see at least two nods to Star Wars, ANH and ESB - In the cave, Yinsen buys Tony more time to power up the suit and runs down the corridor, firing his weapon until he's confronted by a large group of terrorists - very similar to Han Solo in Death Star, and Iron Man clinging to the underbelly of the fighter jet, invisible to radar and satellites, the way the Millenium Falcon hid on the Star Destroyer in ESB to avoid detection until it dumped its garbage.

That may be stretching things a bit. At no time did I ever think that Iron Man needed to take ideas from or pay homage to any other movies even if they were from the good SW films.

Saw it today and thought it was really one of the better comic book movies. The only part that did not make sense was how fast the Iron Monger suit was built and learned to be used.

If anything Star Wars owes a nod to comics... all that stuff was done in various "Super Hero" comics way before the Star Wars movie came out.

A it is based on a comic...
B it is based on a comic...
C it is A movie based on a comic...
D did you feel that any other Super Hero movie needed to be based on anything modern or realistic?

He keeps it as a reminder that his own careless creation(s) could have killed him.

Not sure if this was posted yet:

Marvel Entertainment released their first quarter report to its shareholders this morning to coincide with the announcement about the success this past weekend of Marvel Studios' first production Iron Man, which grossed an estimated $100.7 million domestically and over $200 million worldwide. The announcement included an update of Marvel Studios' feature film slate with the already-rumored Iron Man 2 announced for a release on April 30, 2010, followed by three more movies for the summers of '10 and '11. Matthew Vaughn's Thor is set for a release on June 4, 2010, and The First Avenger: Captain America (the working title) will kick off the summer of 2011 on May 6, followed by the highly-anticipated and foreshadowed The Avengers scheduled for July 2011. (Edgar Wright's Ant-Man is also listed as being in development with no release date set.)
