wasn't that a great doc! have you seen them "live"? I missed the movie theatrically, but saw the group live in October (fun, fun, fun) and just recently rented the movie from Netflix.

A great documentary. Took me by surprise. I really wasn't expecting it to be that deep. I cried about three times.

I haven't seen them live, but that would be awesome no doubt. Glad you got to experience it!

The Brothers Bloom, were it still a 2008 release, would have gone in right behind WALL•E above In Search of a Midnight Kiss.

Superboy

Shit, I think 2008 was probably my favorite year for movies, maybe even knocking off the top contender, 1995. The end of the year really did it for me.

1. The Wrestler removed the bad taste in my mouth that Million Dollar Baby and Rocky Balboa left behind. I never had an interest in pro wrestling, and I never, ever, EVER thought i'd be cheering for a pro wrestler. This alone makes it the best movie of the year for me, probably of the last 10 years, because it made me care about a character that i've had absolutely no interest in my whole life.

2. Slumdog Millionare was probably the best movie i've seen that blended "old" and "new" storytelling styles so seamlessly. A movie that is so incredibly modern but will never be dated. An instant classic, Danny Boyle really knows how to make a good movie.

3. The Dark Knight was a great movie that just happened to star Batman. That's something other comic book movies should really take into consideration.

4. Gran Torino was the biggest surprise of the year for me. For a man who made his name making cowboy movies, he totally deconstructs and vilifies that mentality here. Not at all what i was expecting going into the theater, and a pleasant surprise.

5. If The Dark Knight is a great movie that just happened to star Batman, then Iron Man is truly the full potential of a movie told with a comic book style. Very conventional, but extremely well executed. Robert Downey Jr. also did something amazing here: he made a boring character likable and interesting.

6. Wall-E. I love this movie. It had so much heart, and Wall-E reminded me of my dog.

7. Milk. No one knows who this guy is, but everyone knows what the Twinky Defense is. To me, that is the ultimate injustice.

Haven't seen a lot of the critically acclaimed movies this year, but I'd definitely say that the best movie I saw this year was The Wrestler. I could be biased because I'm a wrestling fan, or maybe it's because it's just a heartfelt, brutally honest tale of discovery and finding your place in the world. Maybe.

10. Slumdog Millionaire -- Don't believe the hype! Yes, it's a good film but not a great one. Even though a lot critics and DVDTalkers are praising this film, I only checked this out because I read "Paper Planes" by MIA was in it. Overall, it was good.

9. Redbelt -- In the screenwriting world, David Mamet is a god. Okay, not really but he should be treated as one. This film was an A+ B-movie. If that makes any sense at all.

8. Rock N Rolla -- Guy Ritchie is one of my favorite directors. He makes the kind of movies I would love to make. I felt this one was right up there with Snatch, perhaps even better.

7. Milk -- I feel that this movie should be required viewing for every registered voter out there. Sean Penn was brilliant, the greatest I've ever seen him.

6. Wall E -- This movie connected with me. Watching it, I felt like it was the work of a master artist. It's almost like an art film that disguises itself as a kids movie. Pixar's best work.

5. Revolutionary Road -- Wow. I didn't know what to expect with this movie. I read some mixed reviews but I put my faith in DiCaprio who really has never disappointed me. Mendes once again, makes my jaw drop with his shots. The score beautiful. DiCaprio still manages to impress in new ways. Kate Winslet, you deserve your Oscar.

4. In Bruges -- This movie had the best dialogue of any movie this year. As an aspiring screenwriter, that goes a long way for me. Martin McDonough, you are the man. I will seek out every movie you write or direct for the rest of your career.

3. The Dark Knight -- After watching this for the 9th or 10th time, I've decided I love this movie. It may have flaws (which I pointed out in another thread) but it doesn't matter. This is a truly great movie and why I love movies.

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button -- I read the screenplay about a year ago, so I thought I knew what to expect. David Fincher elevated this film from the script in ways I never could've imagined.

1. The Wrestler -- I loved this movie. Growing up my friends were really big into wrestling, so guilty by association I was into wrestling. This movie truly captured the essence of the show. I haven't seen Mickey Rourke's older movies, I've only witnessed his comeback, so without prejudice -- he is the best actor of the year.
