Cameron says there now will be four sequels.

James Cameron will make four “Avatar” sequels, promising that the films will start hitting theaters in 2018.
“The next time I see you will be on Pandora,” Cameron told a crowd of theater owners at CinemaCon on Thursday.
The other three films will be released in 2020, 2022, and 2023. The director told exhibitors that the pictures will be filmed concurrently and that each picture will be a standalone story that combines to form a “complete saga.” Originally, Cameron had intended to make three follow-ups to his mega-grossing 2009 smash, but he said the story mandated that more films be made.

4 sequels?
So James Cameron will be working on Avatar until his death bed?![LOL](/images/smilies/lol.gif)
I loved Cameron's work as a filmmaker in years past, but I think it's crazy that he's basically committing the next 10+ years of his life working on this franchise.

It's more like close to 20 years from all the development of the first. And even longer since the initial concept. Which is crazy.
I'd like to see something different from him.... and the TL and Abyss blus.

I know the original box office take was off the charts... but now that we all know the movie kinda sucked, is anyone clamoring for a sequel (let alone 4)???

Are they ever going to release another one or just keep promising more sequels? I'm surprised someone with Cameron's record is so stuck on this project.

Is interest even that high for Avatar these days? I mean since 2009 we have an established Marvel Studios and a Disney backed Star Wars.
To me Avatar is old news. It was a fancy looking CGI film that I saw years ago and that was it.
Reminds me of other films that waited too long for a sequel and just too much time had passed.

I thought RocShemp said somewhere he was planning on taking extended time off from here and didn't know when he'd be back. Either way, it's been abut a year I think since he's posted anything.

Sam Worthington really will be in a wheelchair and Sigourney Weaver really will be dead by the time this endless series of sequels actually get made.

The 1st movie will have come out 9 years earlier and filmed 11 years earlier by the time this comes out. I agree even though the 1st movie made a shit load of money, will this franchise even be relevant in 2 more years?
FOX is really gambling on this as being their next Star Wars. The DC, Star Wars and Marvel movies have already taken center stage. No one gives a shit about Avatar right now.

This older article kind of hints that FOX has a lot riding on this.

Will all four movies be about protecting large trees, or will there be some protection of hedges and other shrubbery as well?

Has anyone read The Holy Road? That'll probably give some insight on where the series is headed.

I eagerly anticipate these four sequels, along with George Lucas's " small experimental films" and the WBA Kill Bill Blu Ray.

Well to be fair, a whole universe was created for this. We get to see more of the creations, planets, go underwater, so other stories set in that world - cool.
As for the jokes about the other movies being about protecting trees...of the four Star Wars movies most people consider to be good, 3 of them feature a climax involving blowing up a giant weapon. And now there's an upcoming movie about obtaining schematic diagrams for one of those weapons (that looks damn good). But that just shows that any cool movie or concept can be reduced to a sentence that makes it sound boring as hell or something trite.
But on top of all that, as for Avatar 2...I'll believe it when I see it.

I worship James Cameron. If he had a cult, I'd totally be there working for free and sleeping on a cot. All hail.
Good to see they finally set some goal dates. I knew he had hired a handful of writers a couple years ago. The updates have just been 'it's coming sometime'.
