Not shocked at all by the two Suzuki choices. I wonder if those are his true top 10, or top 10 favorite Criterions.

...Well they're CC films...so...they'd be his top ten CC films unless his top ten are literally CC films by coincidence.

Yeah I should have clarified, I believe those to be his top ten CC films.

Re: Drive (Nicolas Winding Refn 2011) (Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Ron Perlman, etc
Finally saw this last night. Why did I wait so long to check out the best movie of the year?
I absolutely loved everything about this film. As soon as the opening score kicked in I knew this was going to be something special and different. Refn managed to craft the best film Michael Mann never made in the '80s. I found it refreshing that not everything is perfectly spelled out, or completely wrapped up, leaving viewers to - gasp - think about what they've just watched. Gosling reminded me of classic characters like Harmonica from Once Upon a Time in the West; men who don't speak much but their actions are thunderous. Albert Brooks was perfect as the heavy. I love when actors play against type; they usually deliver some of their best work.
The one single thing I don't quite get is
I'd heard people hated the ending. Not sure why because I thought it was fitting. I'd say this was arguably the best film I've seen in the past 5 years. I'm hooked on the soundtrack and I desperately want it on Blu-ray.

I like your interpretation, PopcornTreeCt. Very astute.
The more I think about the film, the more my mind pieces together. A repeat viewing is assured, as are many more after that.

Looks like the DVD will be released on January 31, 2012. Quite a long wait if you ask me. Can't wait.
Already ordered that jacket. Mines shipping in December. Really hope it looks good. I plan to wear it on every Halloween/Convention

FYI. The pics of the jacket on that website are of the actual screen used jacket they based their copy on. There's a lot of controversy on the prop replica forum because the jacket people will be getting has the scorpion over the stitching as opposed to the stitching over the scorpion, which looks cheap.

After recently watching both Michael Mann's Thief and Walter Hill's The Driver, I'm now of the opinion that Drive would be the resulting film if those two had a baby. Heavy, heavy influence both of those were.

Thief is one of the best examples of a director's trademark style being completely realized in a debut film. I think it's Mann's best film, and all of his artistic flourishes are present throughout it.

This movie definitely feels inspired by Driver and Thief but oddly still has Refn all over it.

Has Refn said anything about Thief? Cuz watching the trailer for it....I'd have to say that Thief was a heavy inspiration for it. Some shots shown in it I'd swear were from Drive...vice versa, I mean. Hell watching The Driver now...goddamn. Refn had to have seen these two films. Jesus...Glad you fuckers brought them up cuz I'm enjoying The Driver for sure. Can't wait to see thief.

Enjoyed this pup. Definitely one of the better movies from '11. All this talk about Tangerine Dream... there was actually a Tangerine Dream tune playing on the car radio in one scene (I think it was from Risky Business). Sorry if it's been mentioned! I'll see this movie again on Blu.

I guess I'll echo everyone's statements and just say this was one of the best movies of last year. I caught it a few weeks ago and absolutely loved it. I really want the soundtrack.

Good movie, though I was a little put out by the psychopath in the lead role. There's cool and then there's psychotic, and this movie strayed a little too far over the line for my taste. Still, it was a well made movie and had many of the elements that I enjoy.
