Looks like fun...not "great" fun, but enjoyable "fluff". I'll see it if only because I haven't seen Beatty on film in so long, it's nice to see him back on the screen.

Yes I've seen both. I certainly see a lot of similarities. To start with the questioning before congress is nearly identical. This seems to have a lighter tone, but it hits all the same "Hughes" notes: Germaphobe, penchant for young pieces of ass, eccentric/driven personality, personal ax to grind about the Spruce Goose.

AND ALEC BALDWIN IS IN BOTH FILMS!
IT'S A CONSPIRACY, I TELLS YA!
Anyway, I'm super jacked to see this. Adored Beatty when I was younger and happy to see him back on the big screen.

Well, I just got back from seeing it. It's not just the trailer that's cut horribly. I was pretty worried for the first thirty minutes or so. Movie is really messy, with rapid jumps without proper transitions -- scenes that play like montages. Stuff just doesn't work. Setting up a Romantic Comedy that's neither romantic or funny. The two leads have zero chemistry together. Lily Collins (Phil's daughter, I just found out) is cute, especially later on, but Ehrenreich is just wooden. Has me worried about Han Solo, big time.
Then about 30 minutes into the picture, Beatty finally appears....and it's a totally different movie. He is fantastic. Really nails Hughes in a way that I never really thought Leo (or Jason Robarts for that matter) did. He's proud but insecure. Guarded yet demanding. It's a GREAT performance -- stunning for a guy who hasn't appeared in anything for fifteen years! I hear he's submitting for Best Actor -- I'm pulling for him but he would have been a shoo-in in the Supporting Actor category. It's one of those performances that you could reasonably put in either one. It was a lot more Hughes-centric than I would have expected. Several scenes played out quite similar to scenes in The Aviator -- those later scenes where Hughes fought with the TWA board and with congress. There's also one scene where Hughes repeats the same phrase over and over again (like he does at the end of Aviator), but he doesn't do it again, even as he deteriorates. Beatty makes him an eccentric but stays pretty much entirely away from the OCD stuff that Scorsese focused on. I can respect him wanting to do his own thing, but I have to wonder if he did, why on earth did he cast Alec Baldwin for like two scenes to play almost the identical role to the one he played in The Aviator.
Anyway, it's a flawed movie, but it has its charms and Beatty gives an amazing performance that really works, even if he's really too old to play the part. I enjoyed it, at least the stuff with him in it.

From Box Office Guru:
Audiences had no interest in Warren Beatty's passion project Rules Don't Apply which was given a wide release in 2,382 locations but came up with a measly $1.6M over three days, according to estimates, for a disastrous $661 average. It was the worst opening weekend average this year for any film debuting in 2,000+ theaters, and surely one of the lowest of all-time too.

I want to say there were probably twenty people in my theater on Saturday night at 7PM. Not great -- and that's in Summerlin, a community named after Hughes's mother!

This was so dull. Beatty was fine in the role though.

I just watched this and thought it was ok. It was not dull and man does Collins look like Audrey Hepburn in this. The BD is $9.99, as well. I checked it out from the library. The Aviator is far superior, but this does have a few great scenes. And it also has an ensemble cast - even if some were just bit players. It' definitely worth a rental at the very least. Too bad it bombed hard.
