I'd hope they have one for that. They've been pretty mum on the footage so far.

And as I stated above, Disney got burned their past 2 times with Lone Ranger and John Carter. Easily more identifiable to joe sixpack than GotG is and had a true movie star in it.

But they have a brand that seems to get interest. Flash that Marvel logo and I'm sure it helps a bit.

Agree, a Marvel logo plus something to catch the audience's attention (say a Raccoon ) would be enough to get the hype going for everyone unaware. Waiting until Captain America seems like a short time between trailer and actual release to me.

The Marvel logo would be incidental, because 95% of the general movie going audience still doesn't know who they are. The other 5% are nerds, fanboys, us, and those that were our age when the comic book debuted. Shit, didn't The Beatles have a song dedicated to Rocket Raccoon. Hell, the biggest complaint people had recently was about the confusing GOTG scene with BDT at the end of Thor 2. Confusing as in they had no idea what that was or what references it was making.

I am excited for Guardians footage, but I think spending $4 million dollars six months in advance is kind of crazy.
Jackman wasn't a huge star when Van Helsing was released, more like the guy who played Wolverine and had somewhat of Broadway following. Bradley Cooper is a bigger star now than Jackman was at the time of Helsing. The fact that he is a raccoon should be irrelevant.

By the time Jackman did Van Helsing he had already done X-Men 2, which was a blockbuster (as was the first one) and he was finally a star. He had already been around for a while in film and television. The same can be said about Cooper. He was in film and television for a while until his first blockbuster came with The Hangover.

Timeframe wise as to how long it took each of them to be a star is almost the same - roughly 10 years give or take.

I really wanted to laugh but I'm guessing that you may not be a Beatles fan so the song is actually Rocky Raccoon not Rocket Raccoon and it has nothing to do with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The song may have actucally been inspiration for the name of character, as he wasn't created until 1976 (and the incarnation of GotG that featured him, the one we're getting in this movie, didn't debut until 2008).

Yeah, something of that sort. I know there was a correlation I just forgot the order.

Anyways, my point is that no way is Marvel spending 4 million dollars for a Superbowl ad on a cult hero team. That's just how it is. GOTG is CULT, which means they don't have a large following. BTW, don't expect Marvel to spend money on a Superbowl ad for Ant-Man next year either.

unless they show coopers name on the screen right under rocket raccoon, this is ridiculous. almost nobody knows he is voicing the guy out of the internet nerds like us. furthermore, he's not in the movie, so you'll never see his face.

Of course people don't know who they are, but that's the point of a trailer. The Marvel brand is hot right now, so throwing the logo up there would get whoever's watching it curious about what they just saw.

I still think the Super Bowl would be the perfect time to introduce a wide audience to the property. And it's not like this is some low budget affair; cult team or not, it sure seems like this is still being positioned as a big summer sci-fi movie.

Oh well, I just hope they don't wait all the way until Captain America to show something off for this.

Super Bowl would be a GREAT time for an ad for this team.

What's the expectations for Cap 2? They're going to put a trailer before Cap 2 for GotG, they've got to. Maybe they're thinking that it'll get big word from whatever Cap gets of an audience? That would get people excited cuz it'd be a surprise but still... That's risky.

I'm not sure why we're discussing Van Helsing. But that movie bombed because it was just ... awful.

I just hope the if rumors of an
Spoiler:
Iron Man
cameo are true, they keep it a surprise and don't start plastering the character all over the ads, unless he plays a larger part than anticipated.

Agreed. The media recaps for Super Bowl commercials seem to grow bigger each year lately. And I'm sure the sight of a machine-gunning raccoon would have generated some buzz from un-suspecting folks.

Yeah. The rest of the team is rather normal, even Groot, compared to Rocket. Cuz he's a fucking raccoon shooting machine guns. Rocket, and the GotG overall, would get big word from a Superbowl ad. People would talk about it just for randomness of it.

The Avengers made over a billion dollars. Its one of the best selling movies of all time. People are most definitely aware of the Marvel brand now, and they know the Marvel movies are connected. People may be generally clueless, but they're not that clueless.

And Iron Man or any of the other Marvel characters had a large following before the MCU? Nope. They were just as obscure to the non-comic reading general audience as GOTG or Ant-Man.

The entire point of a trailer is to build awareness. A lesser-known property such as GOTG needs to build more awareness than something that is already well known (such as Iron Man now), so a trailer during Super Bowl would definitely be beneficial.

Why do you act like that 4 million would be a total loss? Getting a trailer out there to the gen pop and letting them know a new MARVEL movie is coming would almost surely increase ticket sales by a greater amount than 4 million dollars. In the end, its a net gain.

Sure, there's a chance it might fail, but its a fairly remote chance considering the popularity of the MCU.

I agree that people are definitely aware of Marvel as a brand now, just the way they were of Pixar ten years ago.

But I don't think a Superbowl spot would have done much here. Too soon, too little for a film that is going to open in mid summer and need more a lot more publicity/exposition to get the audience inclined to want to see it. Any buzz from a quick ad here would either dissipate before long, or backfire. Just save the money.

It would be much better to tack on a 5-10 minute mini-movie set up pre or post Winter Soldier. That way you get exposure to the concept, vibe, and some of the characters and a 10 minute format allows a mini-cliffhanger or something that could pay off in the actual film. I think that would generate more buzz than an SB spot in January.

Every character/film you've just mentioned is known to even the most non-fanboyish person out there. GOTG is CULT. Marvel would do better and throw that 4 million into post-production instead of a Superbowl ad. Actually, this would be Disney paying for it. Glad they aren't.
