Excellent stuff here, thanks very much. Some of the more obvious ones, I have seen, but others I have never heard of.
I have Moon. Love that movie. Now I'm just looking for the elusive slip cover.....I know, I know.

Would Melancholia be an indie? It's a foreign film but not an Indie. Budget wise in dollars here it's indie but I don't think it was an indie in it's country of origin. It's a Danish production..I don't think it's an indie over there.
Che cost $58 million.
Carlos isn't an indie either.
Great movies though.

Re: Looking for Independent Film Recommendations
Indie just means "outside of the studio system" ie - a studio didn't commission the project, right? Way off base?
Technically, Seven Psychopaths IS an Indie. I think Melancholia is as well since it was produced by Lars Von Trier's company, and then sold to studios. Similar goes to Che despite it's large budget, not dissimilar to The Passion of the Christ which had a $30m budget. I think? I really can't tell anymore, basically if it isn't a romcom with big stars or an action movies/comic book movie I just assume it's independent.
...does The Expendables technically count as an Indie? What about Star Wars prequels?

Re: Looking for Independent Film Recommendations
The Expendables might be an indie because I think Sly invested a lot of his own money into that movie as well as called in favors from his action star friends. The Star Wars prequels I'm pretty sure Fox did invested in and Lucas didn't, however Lucas I believe did invest his own money into Red Tails.

To me, anything that doesn't have a studio locked down when production starts is considered an Indie. (which means The Master too)
