I'd recommend staying away from social media. Pics and video going around of a huge spoiler.

I'm looking forward to watching it but to be honest Empire Strikes Back is the only one in the whole series I consider to be awesome. The original series had it's hits and misses and the new stuff mostly missed. Outside of ESB, they are mostly solid movies but not blockbusters by any means.

Not blockbusters? Maybe there's a new definition for that word that I'm not familiar with.

Yeah, terming a film as a blockbuster says nothing about said film's quality. The Transformers films are blockbusters. They're also shit.

Yeah, a blockbuster is a popular movie that brings in a ton of money.

Don't worry, he wants us to take his opinions on the films seriously despite lacking a vocabulary to discuss them. Just listen and understand that #allopinionsmatter

I just saw it. It was awesome!!!!

Forget the abortions that were the prequels, this was everything you can expect and more. That's all I can say about it for now...

Avoid insidehoops.com as there are trolls who, supposedly, posted a huge spoiler. I don't know if they're true or not - I'm not a Star Wars fan.

Different circumstances, though. There's a whole backstory with the Kenobi/Vader fight. It was self-sacrifice and it came before the final act. Maul was just a random bad guy who did showy choreography.

A visual nod... and one that made sense. Not the same as lifting a scene/story beat full cloth.

Now if any of the prequels is guilty of lifting whole scenes from the OT, it's that one. There's an asteroid chase, parking a ship on a giant object to escape detection... etc. It sounds like TFA takes that approach a step further (a safe, lazy approach that is), but that doesn't mean it's not a crowd-pleaser with a few surprises up it's sleeve.

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015, Abrams) S: Hamill, Ford, Fisher

It very much apes A New Hope blatantly in key scenes:

Spoiler:

Our heroes: Finn (a shaky Leia stand-in) and Rey (Luke) watch from afar as the mentor (Han Solo in place of Obi-Wan) confronts his lost son (Kylo Ren/Ben in place of Vadder) and more or less sacrifices himself. Rey screams out much like Luke did when Obi-Wan was cut down at the hands of Vader. Chewie goes apeshit, fires and hits Kylo and starts killing Stormtroopers similar to Luke in the same scene.

Also, the reveal of Luke at the end is a straight homage to Obi-Wan in A New Hope; shadowy figure in a cloak, down to the hand motions of pulling his hood back slowly.

Oh wait...shit, I was on the wrong page.
Those are from reviews for Attack Of The Clones.

Seriously, even with my disappointment as to how Abrams is structuring the film (ANH 2.0), I can't deny this is the most jazzed and positively optimistic I've been for a SW film since 1983 (right before my heart was completely broken by this franchise). I'm going to go in hoping to see what others are seeing, and if anything I think knowing in advance about the propensity to ape ANH, might help me get over that element sooner. It would seem like more of a blow to sit there cold, wanting to engage with the material and then keep getting jerked back by the retread nature of what is transpiring.
Going in expecting it will hopefully allow the tweaks to the formula to be more fun.
Fingers crossed anyway.

I only said that because I'm not familiar with the saga. I've only seen Episodes IV and I.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Abrams, 2015) — The Reviews Thread

I guess some of us are saying cuz we aren't attached to the franchise? So we're taking it as it is?

For me, 2 great films, 1 film that has some awesome highs and a lot of lows, then... Crap.

SW could fail and I'd be fine w/ that. It'd suck for everyone involved w/ that but if you make crap films... I'd hope it'd fail for the creative heads making it. If it's great, I hope you get all the success you deserve.

Let's be honest here... SW is mostly crap material. The highs in quality for the property are very little to the mediocre crap out there that is SW related. I'm talking about the films, TV, books, and video games. Narrative associated material essentially. It's a franchise that thrives on its fans to buy something SW cuz they love that universe. That's fine and dandy but... it's also bad. Cuz people make crap stuff and then some fan will buy it cuz it's SW. How much crap have fans bought only to essentially get a crap product? A lot.

Guys, I grew up with the movies- the first one came out when I was 10, and I must have seen it well over 100x at this point. I thought Force Awakens was quite excellent. You won't be disappointed.

Because it puts in to perspective whatever thoughts we have when actually seeing the movie while not necessarily caught up in all the hype as the big fans of the franchise are.

So I don't count as a "big fan" if I liked the movie? Nice.
