So I read this yesterday and in one of the chapter selections where they talk designing Dol Guldur they mention that Gandalf encounters Thrain (Thorin's father) and frees him after years of being locked up and tortured. I don't believe that scene is in the theatrical cut of DOS, so it'll be neat to hopefully see it in the EE of the film.

So I read [The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Chronicles: Art & Design] yesterday and in one of the chapter selections where they talk designing Dol Guldur they mention that Gandalf encounters Thrain (Thorin's father) and frees him after years of being locked up and tortured. In the movie, Thorin already has the map, and Gandalf has the key, which he says Thrain gave him for "safekeeping". Gandalf has apparently not been to Dol Gulder before Desolation of Smaug, so it's possible he could actually rescue Thrain instead of just discovering him before Thrain dies.

Some people noted this last year when the Appendices version did not appear in An Unexpected Journey:

"Good storytelling-spotting!" Boyens said, when we asked why we didn't see Thráin, father of Dwarf leader Thorin Oakenshield and one of the bearers of a Ring of Power, give Gandalf the map and key. (Gandalf had found Thráin near death at Dol Guldur.) "We did try it at the front of [An Unexpected Journey], and then we moved it," she said. Does that mean we'll see that moment in a flashback or prologue to The Desolation of Smaug? "Yes, it's very important that we're going to be doing that. We will be meeting Thráin, and it may be in unfortunate circumstances. It may involve torture. The discovery of who or what is in Dol Guldur" — i.e., Sauron, known only at this point as the Necromancer — "is a fantastic part of the storytelling, so yes, of course we went there."

^ thanks, that clears it up.
Also, Azog the Defiler was combined as father/son, because in the books (appendices or elsewhere) they're both dispatched relatively early as opposed to Azog being made one of the primary antagonists for The Hobbit films.
Either way it all works for me.

In the books, Azog died in the battle at the gates of Moria, instead of just being wounded as in the movie. However, Bolg lived until the Battle of the Five Armies, which is featured in the next movie, so he wasn't dispatched relatively early in the books either.

Personally, I don't think the movie mentioned that the orc that took over the Dwarf Hunt was Azog's son, and I didn't recall his name (I think Azog says it in Dol Gulder when giving Bolg command of the Dwarf Hunt).

Thanks again, I'm all scattered brain and was paraphrasing.
Yeah, they didn't expand on that relationship, but I did notice when the other Orc stopped Azog and his tracks and basically told him to get his ass back Dol Guldur. Azog just gives him a stare and takes off. Duh, it all makes sense now, because that Orc was about as tall as was and was also a skilled fighter. He fucked Legolas up.
