Correct. You have to really hate baseball to not believe it's classic.
I don't think people were thinking it fit as a classic but I can assure you that Nolan's The Dark Knight will be around for decades. I wanted to say The Avengers as well but I think its special effects will badly date it in a couple of decades.
My personal favorite of this millennium is probably The Prestige, though I rarely hear its name dropped as a classic. Oldboy is arguably already a classic, certainly for genre fans. The original of course.
My pick for a recent romantic classic would be Once. Recent horror classics? The Others and possibly Cabin In The Woods.

To reach true classic status, a film has to have love from both critics and mainstream audiences.

I can't say we look for different things from films based solely on two movies, but whatever.
Mesmerized by Phoenix being a drunk? Hoffman being underutilized? I'm not the biggest PTA fan, but compared to his earlier efforts, it was easily his weakest outing. Maybe I'm missing something, but there was no there there. I think there was a lot of material to work with, but overall it amounted to nothing of significance. Maybe that was the point of the film, I don't know.
With Field of Dreams, what you see is what you get. If you didn't like that, well you didn't like it, but there was no mystery about what the film was trying to achieve. I don't think PTA knew what he was trying to achieve with The Master, or if he did he lost his way.

No country for old men and there will be blood are by far my favorite movies of the last 10 years, but I'm not sure 10 or 20 years from now they will be movies people seek out and regard as classics. I really can't imagine what movies from this period would be sought after 20 years from now.
By contrast, movies like goodfellas and pulp fiction, and even the shawshank redemption, are certifiable classics that people will want to keep returning to time and time again.
It's really hard to say with the last batch.

I guarantee you 90% of the general public has never heard of these and I would think that would be a pretty important step to being considered a classic as sad as that sounds.

I admit that I was a little cool on The Master when I first saw it in the theater. It just wasn't what I was expecting at all. I was thinking it would be to Scientology as Boogie Nights was to the porn industry. However, I saw it a second time and because I was now more aligned with the film's vibe I liked it a whole lot better. It's a difficult film and it sort of eschews what we consider to be a traditional narrative, but it's so rich. The two lead's are so good. I don't know how you could say Hoffman was underused in that film. That might have been his greatest performance. Also, I've been reading a little bit about the real-life L. Ron Hubbard and that's really helped me unlock some of what PTA was going for. It's not my favorite PTA film, but it's one that seems to keep demanding a revisit.
