I think Deadpool had a wave of good marketing and no legitimate competition for several weeks. I'm not sure we'll see many more R-rated superhero movies from the major studios.

I don't think London has Fallen will have enough legs to make the $98M the 1st movie made. It will probably make around $50-60M domestic. But, I think it could make it's money back from overseas money.

London only cost 60 million to make. It will make money in the foreign territories.

Olympus cost 70 million to make, so the franchise is saving money left and right.

this was made for $5 mil. C was made for $25. I'd say pulling 5x your PB in the first weekend is pretty great...

A movie about NYC being destroyed was inevitably going to be more popular than a chamber piece.

You realize the final product cost $15M right? Paramount and Bad Robot spent nearly $10M retrofitting the film in production to have it fit the Cloverfield banner. Only $10M less than its predecessor and Paramount has spent way more in advertising than its predecessor too (Paramount has already spent $12M+ in television ads alone).

How much did Cloverfield (2006) cost to advertise? (On a side note, I do question the accuracy of iSpot.TV when it comes to Paramount's MTV/MTV2 spending, due to their ties with the network)

Where'd you hear about them retrofitting the movie? From what I've been reading, they didn't retrofit anything past the initial scripting stage (they bought the script for The Cellar, brought in Damien Chazelle to modify it, and then filmed it under their codename Valencia. Which seems unnecessary because even then nobody really talked about it, could have just stuck with The Cellar.) But now I'm curious.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Seems like it's still great to me, doesn't matter how it did in relation to the original Cloverfield given it wasn't a true sequel anyway and the marketing from my perspective only ramped up recently.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

So Deadpool would need a little over $42 million more after this weekend to overtake Passion of the Christ as the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time domestically. It's probably a long shot at this point, especially with Batman v Superman on the horizon (and taking away a lot of screens). Still, it should be able to overtake American Sniper for the second place slot (only $22 million away).

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

A little article on China's artificially inflated Box Office receipts, this is specifically for Ip Man 3 but don't take those recent, massive numbers entirely at face value (I'm sure everbody here knew that).
