There have been plenty of other superhero films to be ranked highly. Those are just two of the standout best examples because they set the bar higher.

I actually find the critics to be pretty spot-on lately. Batman v Superman scored just under a 2.5 out of 5 average which is appropriate, this averaged a 2.8 out of 5, Deadpool got about a 3.5 out of 5, and Civil War a 3.8 out of 5.
3 out of 5 on RottenTomatoes is more or less the transfer from "Rotten" to "Fresh" , sometimes a 2.5 will get a "Fresh" rating as well.

Lots of superhero movies that aren't the Dark Knight or Winter Soldier are received very positively. Of the top of my head, GotG, Deadpool, Civil War, and Ant Man were all well received.
This wasn't horrible in the same way the new Fantastic Four movie was, and it wasn't bad like IM3... it was just a very conventional, average superhero movie with some real flaws.
(At the time of this post anyway, nobody here has rated it above 4 stars or below 2.5 stars.

I just got back from this and it's nowhere near as bad as some folks are making it out to be. I thought Apocalypse looked and sounded cool but I do wish he would have increased his height - maybe 2-3 feet or so. Yeah, I guess it'd be more CGI but to just have him get taller in a psychic battle is somewhat of a cop-out.
I thought Magneto's part was terrific and fucked up all at the same time. His character cannot get a break anymore, so the world of men has to burn. I am ok with that.
Olivia Munn should have taken the Deadpool part, because she was useless in this film. I thought the Quicksilver showcase was awesome. Some of the CGI here and there did look weak but the sound was fantastic. I liked the Weapon X cameo and they really took that to the PG-13 limit, because some of those kills were quite brutal.
I liked how they reintroduced the Phoenix back into the film. I do wish we had a bit more of an origin story for Apocalypse, though. A prologue about his childhood and how he discovers the alien ship and how it merges with his mutant powers would have been great - considering the flick was 2.5 hours long.
As far as these films go I rank 'em:
First Class
Days of Future Past: The Rogue Cut
Apocalypse.
Looks like we will get Mr. Sinister in the next film, so that should be neat.

One thing I really liked even though it was very brief and at the tail end of the film was finally seeing the X-Men in outfits that resemble their classic comic looks. I know technically the outfits from the first three films are inspired by their Ultimate looks but the black leather flightsuits were so boring.

It was OK. Not good as FC or DoFP. I liked the battles in the second half.
Isaac did OK, but Apocalypse needed a deeper more commanding voice. Should have cast someone older.
Quicksilver was great. Hope they can bring in his sister.

I don't think we could have had the comic suits back in 2000. The culture just wasn't there for it. To make so much color common. Like it or not. It had to grow. After X-Men (cuz it was a big comic property to inspire the industry) pay attention to how much color slowly came to be. It had to be baby steps to where we landed to where color combinations came in and proudly so.
Do I like the black suits? yes and no. It fits the world pretty well for how it all started. But at the same time.. we're in a superhero culture to where we have so much color now to insert into our characters in live action. The colors are there for the most part. The outlandish (in a good way) visual nature on some of the suits just don't translate well to the real though. It takes an shifting adaptation of design for it to work. Hawkeye and Wanda wouldn't work out so much for their general 616 designs in live action.

Guess I wanted a voice like Jor-El from Superman. It did come close to that a few times.
Wonder if the extended cut is better. The Psylocke Cut?

You take Olivia Munn out of the fan service outfit, and this appearance really isn't any better than Psylocke's appearance in the The Last Stand.
And for all the excitement there was about Jubilee, this was basically just yet another background cameo for her.
It's pretty clear that there's a specific group of characters that Singer cares about, and no one else will ever get any significant screen time in one of his films.

Yeah, I was shocked that we got that intro. I saw it at ArcLight and that shit played right in front of it. Save it for the end or something.

Re: X-Men: Apocalypse (Singer, 2016) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread
I liked it. Liked it more then First Class (which i've never been that fond of), but not as much as Days of Future Past or X2 as far as the best X-Men movies go. There's some good stuff and bad stuff, and as usual with these X-Men movies a few characters seem underdeveloped and not as fully realized as comic book fans would want while other things they nail pretty well.
In this case, my favorite sequence was the Weapon X stuff. Loved it, more brutal then any of the other X-Men sequences with him (except maybe The Wolverine), and his look nailed the comic book Weapon X look. I liked the Magneto bits... the movies do a great job of understanding his pain. I wish the movies didn't spend so much time on him and Mystique, but all the call backs to the previous movies were great here and effective. Quicksilver was fun like last time, and i'm glad they gave him more to do this time around.
I felt they missed on developing Storm (was excited seeing her origin), Psylocke, and Angel. All of them have far more interesting backstory and character development, but as usual in these movies they seem reduced to henchmen with little motivation and i still hate that they didn't develop the Warren backstory more. I also think they missed an opportunity to have Scott step up at the end instead of Mystique.... it would have given hints to Cyclops leadership of the team rather then end up with Mystique again at the end (which was a huge groan for me, despite the costume nods).
Apocalypse wasn't as bad as I thought, but I do wish his voice and his size were more pronounced. Hard to get that animated series voice out of my head when seeing the character.
Hope Havok isn't really gone, and they show him alive. Hell, do a Genosha story with him turning up there
Anyway, an entertaining entry in the series. Reviews are a little harsher then reality I think, but I had fun. I hope the next entry really moves forward with Scott, Jean, Storm, etc leading the young team and moving on from Magneto and Mystique.

I thought it was fantastic. Personally I'd rate it as the best X Men movie to date.
For the damn life of me I can't figure out how anyone could rate the MCU films over the X Men films. Especially the last 3. The X Men films are better in every calculable way. Better characters, better scripts, more interesting and creative uses of power, better villains (not just a bunch of nameless faceless robots who's fate is of absolutely no consequence), better humour, better actors, more interesting surprises, subtext ( I would have said "better" subtext, but such a thing doesn't exist in the MCU films.) a more real element of danger even if we know it'll probably work out in the end. (Watching the Hulk smash around Loki when there is no threat of either of them being hurt is akin to watching your friend play a video game). A purpose for every scene. Not just throw away scenes of The Hulk fighting the Hulk Buster, for the sake of The Hulk fighting the Hulk Buster.
At the end of the day though I think it just comes down to better filmmakers and better characters to work with. The X Men characters are richly layered characters that bring a lot more to the table than just super powers. They have real human emotions and themes. If Loki, Ultron and Thanos gang raped Pepper Potts on top of the Hulk Buster it wouldn't have fraction of the impact that Eric watching his family murdered in front of him had.
Anyways, rant over. I loved it. It wasn't The Godfather, but I still found it to be a hell of a movie. It breaks my heart to think that theres even an inkling of a possibilty that because it underperformed at the box office that it might get merged with the rest of the MCU dreck. It deserves better than that.

What the fuck are you smoking and do you mine passing that shit this way...
Sure, the MCU have been far from perfect. But compare to the Wolverine... err X-men movies, shit we can't even compare them. There is no bigger X-men fan then me... I have all the comic books till about the late 90's. I stop collecting all together. But these films while entertaining, have left me wanting more all the time. Why the hell focus on Mystique she is a side-kick at best.... I could probably add a shit ton here on how bad the films have been. But im at work. =)
