Sequels are always a double-edged sword. It's great to go back into a world you enjoyed the first time, with characters you love. It's terrible when it's essentially a rehash of the earlier film.
Pixar has never quite fallen down the former path, but there's a big range between Toy Story 2 and Monsters University. (I have no plans to see any of the Cars films, so I can't comment on those).
The problem with Pixar is that their worlds are so imaginative that you can make the argument we miss out by having sequels and not going into bold new directions. Ratatouille was great, but a sequel in place of WALL·E would have taken that from us.
It's a problem of their own creation. You don't set the standard as high as “Is this better than the unanimously well-received film before it?” — you set it higher. “Is this better than a great new original Pixar film?”
And, no, c'mon, Finding Dory can't leap that bar. It's an impossible bar. But it's a very sweet, very sad, very moving, very funny, very entertaining film: Pixar through-and-through.

Considering how long ago Findinf Nemo came out, it's not like Pixar is completely milking it. I liked the first one a lot, but have seen it maybe twice. Then again I don't see many animated movies repeatedly anymore, save for The Lego Movie.

Glad to see it looks like Pixar made a sequel more along the lines of Toy Story 2 rather then Cars 2 or Monsters U.

Now Cars 2 was probably great for kids but I didn't like it nearly as much. Even with the spy theme. So, another big drop-off in quality.

This was fun and a worthy addition to Pixar's filmography.
Loved Idris Elba and Dominic West as the seals.

I can see what Bus is saying wondering what could of been if Dory wasn't made but it was made and I will judge it on that basis. It was a fast moving, funny and touching movie. Since it kind of has the same plot of the original I thought it might be tired but having the search take place in the Marine Life Institute was fun, refreshing and introduced new characters, headed by Ed O'Neill's octopus. I'll give it 4/5.

This pulled $9.2m last night, that's a record for a Pixar "preview", Inside Out made $3.7m before opening to $90.4m.

The family really enjoyed it. ![Up](/images/smilies/thumpsup.gif)
I liked the connections to the previous film, though I was a little surprised Bruce didn't make an appearance.

We recently rematched the first one and I was really struck by how extraneous the shark sequence was. Sure it added to the challenges that Marlin had to endure but I think it could have been dropped from the plot and not hurt the movie at all.

I really enjoyed it. Loved seeing the old characters again, and enjoyed all the new ones too. Saw it at a sold out showing, with about 75 percent of the crowd being adults/teens with no children in sight.
In addition, the short before the movie "Piper" was just delightful. I adored it.

Liked but did not love. Very funny movie. Lots of laughs. Monster University made me laugh a lot as well, in spite of being a really bad movie, and this is pretty much the same. Good jokes, not nearly as much heart as the first film, LOTS of fucking dialogue. WAY too much.

As a father of a 5YO, I'll say that Cars 2 gets better with repeat viewings. It is more of a spoof of the spy genre than racing. Still, LtCG is better in small doses. I like Cars 2 more than Monsters U. Finding Dory was better than both, but it has a literally impossible "heritage" to live up to.
