Re: Another movie SHEEP game: SHEEPERHERO II

Something about Men and Black doesn't seem "superhero" to me.

I think a big part of the superhero mythos is that the general public is aware of their existence. The superhero is there to inspire the common person, give them an ideal to live up to, something to hope in. Men in Black don't do that, as no one knows they exist. They are good guys and, yes, heros, but they are not superheros.

Well if you look at Amazing Spiderman 2 and freeze frame that one scene with Spiderman in it, you can see on a billboard in the background there's a picture of a dude wearing a Tarantula t-shirt so I demand a recount.

Is the general public aware of Blade? Blade was accepted in the last game, and while he is easier to argue, because he appears in the mainstream Marvel U, everything you just said about MIB applies to Blade.

BTW, I fully admit to this being a sneaky answer that I knew could be marked wrong when I submitted it, and I will accept the ruling if everybody says no, but I wouldn't have submitted it if I didn't think it could be argued (and that's half the fun of these games anyway).

Obviously, that isn't the single defining characteristic of what makes a "superhero". I'm asking myself why Men in Black don't seem like superheros, and looking at what makes them different from Spiderman, or Iron Man, or Superman. While inspiring us puny humans isn't something every superhero does, it seems to be more common than not.

I guess the main thing that creates a superhero character is super-human ability (flying, shapeshifting, alien, part animal). For some characters like Batman and Black Widow, all they have is superhuman athletic abilities, but it seems to be enough to place them ahead of the average cop or soldier.

Again, I can accept the ruling, but MiB (the film) has much more in common with your average superhero film than it does with either of the above.

The Punisher has no superhuman abilities, and MiB (as laid out in the film) are hardly your average cop or soldier. They are chosen from the best of the best cops and soliders.

Take something like Wanted. Now the film removes most of the superhero elements (although they still clearly display superhuman abilities), but the comic starts exactly like the flim, and instead of the son of an assassin, Wesley finds out that he is the son of as supervillain and is brought into their world.

This origin is very similar to how agent Jay is brought into the world of MiB.

But there are also conflicts that would keep them from fitting in with the Marvel universe (comics or film). Why would a group be trying to cover up the existence of aliens in a world where they're common knowledge. MIB needs to be its own distinct thing to work.

You brought up Blade earlier, but that's a character that was part of a shared universe from day one. He was in the shadows, but he always do-existed with characters like Spider-Man and Hulk. If Marvel wanted, they could retroactively claim those films as part of their cinematic universe, because nothing would conflict with what we've seen.

MIB couldn't do that.

Do you have to be part of a shared universe to qualify as a superhero? Or to take the contrary opinion, just because a character appears in a superhero shared universe, does that necessarily make them a superhero? If Sony went ahead with the Aunt May prequel some sources say that they were planning, is it a superhero movie?

It wouldn't make Aunt May a superhero, but I would but that Sony would have added elements that made it a superhero movie.

Have you tried one of Aunt May's wheat cakes? If so, you'd know she's a superhero.

That and her ability to repeatedly conquer death.

Both Judge Dredd and Men in Black are stories about uniformed government agents who use futuristic weaponry to fight superpowered criminals. Edgar fits the criteria of a supervillain.
Since when is his name "Edgar the Bug"?

It's just Edgar in the credits.

He's repeatedly referred to as "The Bug" by the MiB throughout the film. Edgar is just the skin of the guy that he first inhabits.

Re: Another movie SHEEP game: SHEEPERHERO II

But how about this one, the name of a superhero or supervillain is often not chosen, but given by others.

And yes I'm just being contrary for the sake of it at this point.

Re: Another movie SHEEP game: SHEEPERHERO II

I've never thought of MiB as a superhero movie, but FWIW the Wikipedia article discusses it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superhero_film

The success of the "darker" Image Comics characters shifted the direction of comic book movies. Marvel soon released their films to become franchises, Men in Black (1997) and Blade (1998). After Marvel bought Malibu Comics (The company owned "Men in Black"), Marvel and Columbia Pictures released the Men in Black film and comics in 1997.[11] The film became the first Marvel property to win an Oscar and the then highest-grossing comic book adaptation until the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in 2002.[12]

Exactly. I notice wishbone got a -10 and was going to point that out.

I thought it was a wasted slam dunk like slamming a Sheep question and getting a unique (bootsy). I was thinking with the bug options available that others might go Sheepy on the reverse but clearly I guessed that wrong.

Re: Another movie SHEEP game: SHEEPERHERO II

Sorry again ... had an emergency at work.

So we have some issues on the table at the moment:

Are the Men In Black superheroes, thus making Edgar a supervillain?

Is Edgar's name "Edgar the Bug?"

AND

What happens when you SLAM a REVERSE but have a UNIQUE answer?

I think if someone thought up both Green Arrow and Tarantula he should be given a bye to first place but that's just me.

Re: Another movie SHEEP game: SHEEPERHERO II

Given the number of lingering questions on Edgar, I do not feel there is enough of a basis to award points.

On the SLAM, here is what the Sheep rules have to say:

Slam Dunks {sd} Players have the power of multipliers in their hands. Each player is given five (5) Slam Dunks ({sd}) which they use by adding {sd} to the end of their answer. Your Slam Dunks have different effects depending on the question you use it on:
In Sheep questions, the {sd} adds 1 to the Multiplier.
In Reverse Sheep questions, you can use your {sd} to turn the question into a sheep question for you. However, if your answer is wrong, it does nothing.
Slam dunks cannot be stacked. Use one per question only or else they will be discarded. You cannot use two slam dunks to turn a Reverse into a Sheep and then slam dunk those sheep answers.

I am calling on the power of the Sheepmasters before me, as the rules do not specifically address a UNIQUE answer. However, the rules do specifically state a {sd} turns a REVERSE into a normal sheep question. Turning it into a sheep question would negate the UNIQUE ...

14.) Filmmakers with no backbone will often remake movies rather than come up with new ones … What superhero film is most in need of being remade/rebooted?

I'm going to start with an answer that ... well ... I have no idea what it is ...

DaveNinja ... no points.
