Ip Man’s life remains unchanged after his wife’s death, but he and his son are slowly drifting apart. To seek a better future for his son, Ip Man decides to travel to the U.S. only to find the stable, peaceful life abroad is only skin deep. Underneath lies a deep rooted racial discrimination that is far worse than he has expected. Ip Man re-examines his position and ponders on the reason he took up martial arts in the beginning.

Weird to release it on Christmas day. I've been seeing a lot of Well Go distributed movies getting Stateside theatrical releases. If this is playing at one of my local AMC's, I'll try to check it out, but not on Christmas day.

I finally caught up with the series. 3 was more of a set up for Cheung and his Master Z movie. The fight with Tyson was anti-climatic. I was hoping there would be more Bruce, but looks like that will all be in this 4th film.

It's always satisfying to see these broadly stereotypical "is this your Chinese kung-fu?" baddies get their asses kicked throughout the history of martial arts films, but lately these kinds of shows keep me thinking about guys like Xu Xiaodong, that mainland Chinese MMA fighter who's been challenging the fakery and false claims of "kung fu" posers for a while now — and paying a disproportionate personal price from his benevolent government in the process. Borderline supernatural mysticism and physics-defying hoodoo surrounding so many martial arts in contemporary times have been part and parcel of the martial arts/action cinema I've loved for most of my life. The movies arguably created the perception, and the IP MAN films certainly don't dispel it. Minor conundrum, I suppose, especially since I'm not an MMA fan and don't always find it overly graceful when it's worked into action films (even if it does add more realism). And since the movies are there to entertain (even 'soft political' ones like IP MAN 4), I'll check this out eventually. It does look pretty flashy.

Three theaters...wow...I'd probably go to the one in Richmond, that's the old Santikos theater which Regal bought up. However, it won't be on Christmas day. I can't imagine that conversation going over well with the loved ones. Yeah I'm going to ditch the relatives and go see CHINESE KUNG FU!

Re: Ip Man 4 (2019) -- S: Donnie Yen
With this news he’s officially entered Jackie Chan territory! He’s been a bit more successful at straddling the two (very distinct) film industries for a few years now, all the while softly sucking up to the CCP, but his little jig with Xi Jin Ping a while back was probably the last straw for most of the population of the city that gave him his fame and fortune (and previously took it away from him for a while when his massive ego and drug use became liabilities). If he goes full Jackie, though, it probably won’t hurt his career much since the Party will make sure he gets to make plenty more revisionist martial arts epics or Wolf Warrior-style epics and clueless Hollywood producers/studios will continue casting him in their ceaseless efforts to bend over for whatever slice of the box-office pie China deigns to give them.
I’m kinda leaning to Raymond Wong being an even worse offender here. You can’t discuss Hong Kong’s key era of the 80’s and 90’s without mentioning his contributions, especially as one of the founders of Cinema City (A Better Tomorrow, City On Fire, Prison On Fire, the Aces Go Places series), but also as a writer, producer and/or actor on tons of trendsetting, often socially-conscientious comedies. Kinda sad that he turned.
