I saw TH8 roadshow in 70MM and I was loving it so much that it just flew by. I was surprised how quick it got to the intermission. Since then I've watched it on Blu-Ray and for me it does not feel like it's 3 hours.

For me Django felt like it dragged, especially once Christoph Waltz and LDC were out of the picture.

Two-and-a-half times its budget used to mark the break-even point back when I was a film student 40 years ago. 3X the budget is more like break-even now, maybe even 3&1/2 times. So, yeah, that's a major disappointment.

Nonsense. Whenever I read stuff like this it reminds me of the scene in True Romance when Lee asks Elliot how much that day's shoot cost him and when Elliot tells him he says "I swear God, somebody is stealing from me."

Next we're gonna believe that the LOTR trilogy actually lost money.

Because Hollywood accounting is one thing, making back that much on Hateful 8 is another. Ash is 100% correct.

Better that than Fox or WB that are known to be a bit hands-on with their features.

But wasn't that Fox, under Rothman's regime, who is now the head at Sony? Fox seems less hands off these days without him.

Was Rothman in charge? All I remember is not a single one of their non-X-men action films came in without being completely chopped up by the studio. They couldn't even get a Die Hard out the door without chopping the shit out of it.

Yea, that was during Rothman's time at Fox (2000-2012). He fucked up Origins (made them sew Deadpool's mouth shut), fucked with X-3, didn't want to move forward with a Deadpool film, etc.

And, as you mention, neutering Die Hard 4. Plus, many, many other offenses.

It's lucky that we had a relationship with QT and distributed Django internationally. $100M is a drop in the bucket compared to the shit we spent money on *cough*ghostbusters*cough* and that he has final cut is good and bad. I don't mind a long film. I prefer the Django cut that I saw with 15 extra minutes. I didn't understand needing the intermission for Hateful8 and could have easily sat through that without it (of course it negates the somewhat necessary "this is what happened" portion.) But as a studio, you don't make money if you can't screen the film multiple times per day. Who wants to get out of the movie theaters at 1am?

I wonder if it's going to be another 70mm film?

Cool beans. And QT will have an ironclad guarantee, too. Sony won't be able to back out of whatever stipulation the film will have like Disney did with removing Hateful 8 out of the Dome in order to stick Force Awakens there.

Now I'm not saying this next film will be shot in 70mm, so...

Oh, and if this is still about the Manson Murders then I am assuming Cruise will play Charles Manson.

Another demand was that the rights to the movie revert to him after 10 to 20 years. The film, which has a working title of #9 (it will be Tarantino’s ninth movie), will have to make $375 million worldwide to break even, according to one source.

^ Wow. Well, they gotta pay up and QT receiving 25% first dollar, so Sony has to up what they need to "break even." What a fucking racket.

If that's how much they need to break even then it's already a bomb. They just want to say that they worked with QT when The Weinstein Company failed. It can be considered an investment of sorts if you look at it that way.

Sony has already worked with QT on international distribution of Django. And overall that film made $425M. Most of it coming from foreign box office. I think we're hedging our bets on this.

Of course the last time we gave total control over a film to someone, it didn't turn out so good.

It's good movie, but wasn't economically viable. And this being QT, he just doesn't make bad films.

I love every Tarantino movie but this subject matter just doesn't interest me in the least. Guess we'll have to see...

Like Stephen King, Tarantino is an artist that needs somebody with the balls to cut out the more pretentious, long-winded elements of their work.

Oh, I'm not disputing it wasn't a good movie, however, Fincher had total control over not just the film, but marketing as well...
