Re: Blade Runner 2049 (Villeneuve, 2017) — The Spoiler Filled Reviews Thread

Regarding the horse figurine dream/memory... there was a hint before the reveal that K wasn't the born replicant. Before she was about to leave the next morning, the prostitute noticed the horse on K's nightstand and said something to herself along the lines of "it's like from a dream." The implication being that Decker's daughter didn't implant the horse memory just to K, but to other replicants as well.

At least that was my take after my one viewing.

Also interesting that Decker's carving that ended up in an implanted memory was a horse rather than a unicorn...

I didn't pick up on that as far as implanting them all. It reminds me of the first film and Deckard's unicorn dream -- how that was implanted, as well. Ganz knew since he left the origami for him. Maybe he was in cahoots with another memory implanter in those days?

I generally liked the film but there are many specific details I didn't like. When they are taking Deckard to the airport and K is pursuing them where the heck did he get that flying car? And then it has blaster guns on it and it shoots down the other flying cars. At no other time in either movie was there any indication that the Spinners had blasters. That was just dumb.

You mean like the one he had been using the entire movie? And given he was a very resourceful Blade Runner, it wouldn't be all that hard to gain access to another, legally or otherwise.

Yeah, it seems they gave his model of replicant enough creativity to get their job done, it's not hard to imagine he could procure another one, especially one with a gun.

And as for the police spinners having guns, our modern day police forces are being armed like the military, it's not that much of an extrapolation.

True, Wallace still wants his body, I see this as another plot hole. Similar to why Wallace even wants replicants to be born in the first place. Would Apple want iPhones to reproduce on their own, or would Apple rather control the means to produce them? Really a stupid premise.

It's a pretty ridiculous extrapolation. The thing is suddenly a Tie Fighter! It's too much like a space opera thing to have suddenly happen.

And if he has this firepower in his car, why did he get shot down in San Diego?

Well, in San Diego, they shot him down by lo-tech means. Think about it.

I love the assumption that every spinner is the same in terms of design, capabilities, armaments, etc.

Consider the possibility he drove a standard issue spinner for most of the movie and procured an armed one to rescue Deckard?

Seriously guys... keep going.

It was like how the ewoks could take town the imperial equipment. They had the good force on their side.

Wallace doesn't just want the tech of self-replicating replicants, he wants humanity to conquer the stars and for that he thinks we need an army of replicants - super-strong human-like persons that can have their own babies.

To me Blade Runner is the anti Star Wars. It's just not "Blade Runner kosher" to me to have ships with blasters shooting each other down. You can rationalize it all you want, it just shouldn't happen. It's Buck Rodgers stuff.

Which is why you should be pleased. The tech level justifies its existence, but it was used extremely sparingly. Maybe 10 seconds of screentime in a 163 minute movie.

That won't die due to the effects of radiation and other hazardous conditions. He needs that type of workforce.

Edit: Never mind, found out! In case you didn't know, here you go: https://www.gamespot.com/articles/ho.../1100-6453912/
Sean Young was on a podcast yesterday and talked a bit about her involvment:

http://www.klbjfm.com/media/podcasts...t-3-sean-young

Spoiler:
They've CGI'd you from the past and gave you a credit as an acting coach?

YOUNG: Acting coach? Was that the credit?

It was in an article. An acting coach to yourself, essentially.

YOUNG: This is why I don't read the press.

So did they get in touch with you?

YOUNG: Oh, no - I got paid. I got flown out there. Honestly, I think it was an Alcon Entertainment insurance policy. Because I think to not put me in the movie would have been kind of strange. And I'm not - in my personal opinion - in it enough. But the whole story line is about my character from the original.
YOUNG: I was there in Budapest for about three days. It was kind of strange. It did end up making me feel a little bit like a dinosaur, because I got there and it really ended up that my job was to sit next to Denis Villeneue, the director, and watch as the shoot was going on. And then I worked about an hour in front of a camera going "Oooo", Eeee", "Uhhh" - you know, doing facial expressions so that they could CGI it later.

You haven't seen it?

YOUNG: I've seen it twice now, yeah.

Where you happy with the way the CGI stuff turned out?

YOUNG: Um... it was okay. My interpretation was that they put clips in from the original Blade Runner because they wanted to sort of reinforce that sequence.

Gotcha.

YOUNG: You know? And I think... yeah. Well, I might be prejudiced. (Laugh)

I would love to see this again in the theater, but I've been so busy with work and what not. I'm really bummed it's under performing at the box-office. I think boxoffice.com originally projected it to do in the 125M range by the end of it's run. Deadline.com is projecting it at around 7.4M this weekend. Which would would bring it total to roughly 75M. So it now looks like it will finish around 85-90M.

I thought then CGI on Rachel was amazing. I wouldn’t have minded if they could have used more archival footage of her also.

The CGI was so good that I kinda wish they would have improved the Leia footage in Rogue One for the Bluray release so it didn’t stand out so much.

Unfortunately Rogue One will forever be plagued by a Tarkin stuck in the super creepy part of the Uncanny Valley.

To my eyes, it looked like they took footage of Young's face from the original Blade Runner shoot and manged to line it up perfectly on to the body of a different actress. The only give away that it wasn't really '82 Sean Young was the movement of the lips while speaking. They still haven't perfected that... and her voice was clearly a different person. Considering the production company went to the effort of flying Young to the set, I don't know why they didn't just have her record those couple of lines. Her voice hasn't really charged that much with age.

Saw this today and it's the best film I've seen in theaters in years. 5/5 for me and a grand slam for Villeneuve.

I had no issues with the lips while speaking and it thought it sounded exactly like Sean Young. I watched "Blade Runner" again the night before I saw this.

Eh, maybe I'm overly critical. I just checked out the clip again on YouTube. It's only four syllables, but I can still spot a slight disconnect between the voice and lips... and she definitely sounded different to me (Villeneuve confirmed the voice isn't Sean Young). I also watched the original again before seeing this one.

Didn't say it was Sean's voice. But it sounded just like her. So, job well done having another actress do such a convincing voice over.
