The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018, W: Kripke, D: Roth) S: Black, Blanchett

In the tradition of Amblin classics where fantastical events occur in the most unexpected places, Jack Black and two-time Academy Award® winner Cate Blanchett star in The House with a Clock in Its Walls, from Amblin Entertainment. The magical adventure tells the spine-tingling tale of 10-year-old Lewis (Owen Vaccaro) who goes to live with his uncle in a creaky old house with a mysterious tick-tocking heart. But his new town’s sleepy façade jolts to life with a secret world of warlocks and witches when Lewis accidentally awakens the dead.

Based on the beloved children’s classic written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House with a Clock in Its Walls is directed by master frightener Eli Roth and written by Eric Kripke (creator of TV’s Supernatural). Co-starring Kyle MacLachlan, Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Vanessa Anne Williams and Sunny Suljic, it is produced by Mythology Entertainment’s Brad Fischer (Shutter Island) and James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), as well as Kripke.

I remember the TV version in the '70s.

I saw the trailer for the first time in front of Ready Player One and I will admit that it looks pretty good. Not sure if I will end up in theaters to see it but it feels like the type of film that begs to be seen on a super large screen.

A Harry Potter type movie with Eli Roth at the helm. This could either fall completely flat or be a classic.

Jack Black is looking like Orson Welles.

This looks real fun and I don’t usually say that about these type of movies, but I did love Deathly Hallows 1 & 2. Saw most of others, but not quite sure I saw all of 1 or 2 of them. I know I didn’t see all of Azkaban, even though I love Oldman. I’ll see em all, again, eventually and have DH in 3D.

But, back to this one. I think if reviews are good or decent, it will do very well...

I always joked that Japanese directors had to work up to Kid movies. Guess that applies everywhere

Sp, apparently a remastered 3-D version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is being shown in select IMAX screenings before this film. I'm trying to find a list because so far I've only seen one theater doing it, not sure where that was located. But this would definitely get me to pony up for IMAX.

He can’t direct horror to save his life and can’t act for shit, so why not take this route.

My local AMC has it in IMAX with Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Went ahead and reserved a ticket for Sunday afternoon.

Big fan of Eric Kripke’s work on Supernatural and Timeless, so I want to support his first movie in well over a decade. The trailers do look like this could have some cool visuals.

It’s an Amblin project, and this is part of them trying to get that brand back up and running. Spielberg told Roth to make something that scares kids. When Spielberg says do something, you comply.

Problem is I don't think Eli Roth has the talent required to comply.

I am having severe Mandela effect with this. I loved the books as a kid and I could have sworn there was a version made in the early 80's that I saw on a Saturday morning that had Richard Masur as Uncle Jonathan. Obviously it never existed looking at his IMDB and I must have seen this version although it looks nothing like what I remember in my head. I literally thought this Richard Masur version existed until I read this thread.

I’m having a hard time mustering the interest to go see this and write a review. May just wait and go see Smallfoot next week....

We just got back with our 8 and 16 year old. We all enjoyed it. I wasn't much of a Jack Black fan early on, but between Goosebumps and this I've started to enjoy him. I didn't realize this was an Eli Roth film. I'd see it again.

Goosebumps being as terrible as it was put me off of Jack Black films, but he surprised me in Jumanji, and I've watched all of Kripke's Supernatural, so I'll probably give this a chance.

I had the same reaction, wasn't all that impressed with Jack in Goosebumps, but the Jumanji movie was a surprise, here though, he really embellished his character - I wasn't expecting too much out of this movie but was quite surprised how much more I liked it.

seeing this in IMAX along with the Michael Jackson 'Thriller' in 3D was icing on the cake!

I was actually a bit surprised that Jack Black didn't do more family movies immediately after School of Rock hit. But 15 years later, here we are.

Then again he also had Nacho Libre in that time and he doesn't give the most PG interviews: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4mkarWJRwg

Ah I forgot about Jumanji. He was good in that. We enjoyed Goosebumps. The new on doesn't seem all that interesting to me.

Re: The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018, W: Kripke, D: Roth) S: Black, Blanchet

I saw this today in IMAX with Michael Jackson's Thriller in 3D before it.

Thriller looked really good for a 35 year old extended music video. The 3D wasn't really necessary though.

The movie itself was a pleasant surprise. Normally I don't watch family movies like this. But, I found it charming and for the most part very entertaining. I would say Cate Blanchett and the kid were the highlights. And I enjoyed that it was a period fantasy. Jack Black was fun too.

I liked the blink and you'll miss it Eli Roth cameo as well. It was a very quick appearance.

This is not for everyone and I'm sure most here don't have any interest, but I thought it was a fun way to spend 1 hour 45 minutes on a weekend. I probably wouldn't have seen it, especially for the $17 price tag for IMAX had it not been for AMC A-List.

If you have kids, I think this is worth taking them to. My IMAX although not full had many families with kids watching.
