DORA AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD (PG) - Amazingly, a fun family adventure movie with a teen cast that is appropriate for even the youngest viewers who watch the animated TV show.

Wow. I am still amazed as I am writing this at just how squeaky-clean the new movie “Dora and the Lost City of Gold” was. Outside of the word “poo” being used instead of the traditional euphemism for “No. 2” (which is also sung at one point), I can’t remember anything except a couple of action scenes that might be even slightly unsettling for the youngest audience members. I wanted to get this out of the way up front because, if parents want this type of entertainment for their kids, they really need to support the rare good ones that come along.

“Dora” is the first live-action cinematic spin-off of the extremely popular animated Nick. Jr. series, and actually mines quite a bit of humor from its animated roots. Yes, there have been parodies from College Humor and other sources, but those were not aimed squarely at the broadest family audience possible. Kudos to Paramount and Nickelodeon for doing this and keeping it just barely on the PG side of G.

As the movie begins, we are introduced to 6-year-old Dora and 7-year-old cousin Diego, along with Boots, the monkey, Backpack, and Map, as they seem to be going on an adventure in the Peruvian jungle, similar to those in the animated show. We soon learn that Diego is about to go back to the States and his adventures with Dora are coming to an end. Dora’s parents, Elena (Eva Longoria) and Cole (Michael Pena, bringing the funny when he can), share with Dora and Diego about their plans to find an ancient lost city rumored to be the repository of more gold than the rest of the world combined.

Fast forward ten years, and teenage Dora (the aDORAble Isabela Moner - ugh, I could not resist, sorry) must be rescued by her parents as she is hunting the lost city with only Boots as her backup. This prompts them to send her to the States to live and go to school with cousin Diego (Jeff Wahlberg). Dora quickly runs afoul of mean but brainy Sammy (Madeleine Madden) but also sparks the interest of nerdy Randy (Nicholas Coombe). Dora’s smarts and unflappable enthusiasm and positivity makes her a target for the other high schoolers, and Diego urges her to take it down a few notches. In the meantime, Dora is in constant contact via satellite phone with her parents as they continue to search for the lost city.

While on a field trip to the Natural History Museum Dora, along with Diego, Randy and Sammy, are kidnapped and transported to South American by mercenaries (who include the animated fox, Swiper, voiced by Benecio Del Toro!), who are also tracking Dora’s parents. The teen are rescued by Alejandro (Eugenio Derbez), a bumbling cowardly fellow who claims to have known Dora’s parents since college. With the mercenaries and the Guardians of the city on their trail, Dora and her new friends pull out all the stops to find her parents first and perhaps uncover the Lost City of Gold.

“Dora and the Lost City of Gold” owes a lot to Indiana Jones movies, the recent Jumanji reboot, and of course, the original animated Nick Jr. series. It is fast, it is fun and funny, there are decent jokes for all ages - Pena’s description of Rave music is hysterical - and I really enjoyed this clean family adventure comedy. I am giving it 4 out of 5 lightsabers and I am sure I will be watching it with my grandsons on VUDU come Christmas time (they live in Texas). I only wish enough parents will take their kids to see Dora to warrant making a follow-up.

NOTES TO PARENTS: (Some mild spoilers) Dora and the Lost City of Gold is rated PG for adventure action and some impolite humor. There is no cursing, although “Oh My God” is said a couple of times, and Dora yells “Shoot” during an action scene. The word “poo” is used several times to humorous effect, specifically to remind us that we ARE watching a kids movie, and as Dora explains with a straight face, it is medically necessary. Dora is verbally bullied a bit at the high school where she is attending with her cousin. Mercenaries kidnap Dora and, inadvertently, her friends, and knock them out with sleeping gas. Despite the fact that the main cast are all teenagers, the movie is safely “hormone-free” although Diego and Sammy kiss at one point. The action is all Indiana-Jones-lite level of danger. There is a scene where the group steps into quicksand that makes farting noises, and many “I ate too much….” type jokes follow, until everyone starts sinking. A pair of scorpions do a mating dance on top of Alejandro’s head while he is trapped in the quicksand. The main group run as Peruvian Indian arrows are shot at them but no one is hit or injured. The mercenaries, while menacing, never actually hurt anyone. Dora, Diego and Alejandro breathe in some plant spores, and hallucinate that they are cartoon characters. Alejandro’s cartoon character’s bare butt is shown for a split second.

MID- AND AFTER-CREDIT SCENES: As the credits begin to roll, there is a high school dance musical number with the entire teen cast, then Alejandro and his new “friends” then finally Dora’s parents and Swiper. At the end of the credits, there is a short 10 second bit with three animated animal characters that I assume are from the TV show. They don’t really do anything but take a quick bow, then leave the screen.
