Adam Driver is a great actor. I'm pretty sure he can be a fantastic Mr. Fantastic. Most of the actors in the MCU are overqualified for the actual material.

Reed is supposed to be in his early 40's. An actor can play that into his early to mid 50's these days. Not a problem with Driver.

The problem with driver is that he doesn't look the part.

I would wager that the MCU is going to take Reed Richards in a different direction than the traditional Reed Richards; more of a sexy hipster nerd/tech bro than a stretchy Ward Cleaver.

Makes me think they're thinking along the lines of Elon Musk/SpaceX and Jeff Bezos/Blue Origin.

The Fantastic Four is going to be tricky to pull off in the current era, where the whole concept is rooted in the concept of the traditional nuclear family and the early space age. The original concept is an outdated artifact of the past, and the further you remove the concept from its roots, the less it feels like the Fantastic Four. There's going to be a fine line to walk.

How marvel proceeds with the Fantastic Four and Dr Doom will determine my further interest in the MCU. That being said I don’t have any particular casting choices in mind or anything, but I really hope they don’t fuck this up.

Saw a blurb somewhere saying Matt Smith was looking more and more like Marvel's pick for Reed.

Better than Driver, I initially thought, but still not my ideal for that character.

Then I thought about it some more. I can see it now. Especially because he could bridge a gap between the brilliant Ward Cleaver version of the character and the likely younger tech bro conception someone suggested.

How he would fare with the eventual group chemistry would be a bigger sticking point- as it will be with any choice(s) they make.

The more I think about it, I could see Matt Smith playing Reed Richards as a toned-down Eleventh Doctor.

It's just really hard not to see him as the manic, bow-tied Time Lord.

Yeah, that's why I wasn't as keen on it when I first heard it.

It's been 13 years since he first took that role, and he's 40 now. Older, likely slower and more measured. The more I thought about, the more it seems like he fits a Reed that isn't that far off from the typical perception of the character across sixty-something years

I didn't see the followups that Decker has, so it may or may not be true. It's also possible that Marvel could be floating names from their short lists to gauge fan reaction before serious negotiations or committals
