Sony's thinking: We made 856k worldwide with Venom and won an Oscar with Spider-Verse and kept the profits and prestige. Why do we need Marvel/Disney? Bring on Morbius!

The problem is that a movie making a ton of money doesn't make it a good movie.

re: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021, D: Watts) - S: Tom Holland

A 50/50 split does seem quite excessive considering Sony owns the character. But Disney only getting 5% is definitely way too low. More than likely this is just a reactive negotiating ploy by Sony saying...No, if you want that much, we're out.

The Spider-Man movies have made a lot of money for Sony, but adding the MCU into the mix with Feige overseeing it has only increased it's popularity.

re: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021, D: Watts) - S: Tom Holland

A 50/50 split is fine as Marvel is bringing their incredible reputation, Kevin Feige and his production team, their characters and the crossover appeal while Sony only brings up the character to the table and does the distribution and marketing. That's it. The current Spidey films wouldn't have been successful as they were if it wasn't for the MCU appeal.

Bring on an Amazing Spider-Man 3 and watch the cash flow in. They really need to just sit back and let Disney do their thing while taking that fat check to the bank. Unless Venom 2 is a substantial improvement over the first one, it is not going to make anywhere close to what the first one did.

I've been saying here on this board for for over a year that the deal for Spidey to be in the MCU ended with Far From Home and that there was no guarantee that he continues on in the MCU past that. Practically everyone here told me that Sony would never pull out of this deal. It brings me no pleasure to be right about this, but it really doesn't surprise me at all.

Sony's stock did drop a little once the Spider-Man story broke. It's entirely possible that stockholders don't want to lose the MCU partnership that brought them such a hugely successful movie.

I would have to think that they can work out a deal. The current deal is ridiculously skewed towards Sony, so Marvel is right to ask for more. Right to ask for 50/50? Maybe not, but that's a starting point, not an endpoint.

Amy Pascal is a hack and a moron. Keeping her and getting rid of a partnership with Kevin Feige would be AMAZINGly stupid.

Yeah, I've been expecting the Sony/Marvel-Disney deal to go south after "Far From Home" (the fifth and final movie of the deal between the studios) after Venom landed big.

But I figured that Sony would walk away thinking they could strike out on their own with a portfolio full of Spider-Man characters, not that Disney would overplay their hand. Of course I didn't know what a sweetheart deal Sony had in place with them, either. Five percent of the BO is really peanuts and they must have really wanted Peter in Infinity War.

If this were a high stakes poker game, Marvel brought Sony to a table, but Sony had to stake their own buy in, gambled, won its largest pot and now Marvel wants half of that? Are you serious? In what world is that fair?

Marvel put up no money for any production costs of Homecoming or Far From Home (unlike Skyfall, which Sony did not put up any production costs.. we helped finance it with MGM, took only a 25% cut, and lost home video rights of the Bond library after Quantum of Solace). And Pascal is no longer the head of the Sony Production studio and hasn't been for the past 3 years, so you can all stop using her as an excuse or have you not notice she is credited under Pascal Pictures (she gets the Exec Producer title because she originally brokered the deal to get the rights to Spidey and all of his associated characters, but she doesn't have much say otherwise. She can talk all she wants, but she really just collects a fat check.)

No way Disney deserves 50 percent of the pot. They already get 100 percent of all Spidey merchandising. I'm with Sony on this one.

To paraphrase Danny Glover in Dreamgirls, "I love you Disney, but you can't have it all."

This... my favorite superhero outside of Iron Man. While I understand Sony's decision, I also lament the end of a damn good run of Spider-Man content.

Fuck Sony, thinking they are hot shit again. The audience will expect Spidey to be in the MCU now. Idiots.

Yeah, I'm with Sony 100% on this one. Giving up half from a property they own is insane. Disney is being greedy fucks, as usual.

This wasn't Sony wanting more; they were fine with the same deal they've had to this point. Disney wanted half the pot.

This! I think this would be the ideal situation Sony would need to get Spidey fans back on board.

Really, it's not a good deal at all on Sony's end unless they're getting something else out of it we don't know about.

I'm not really sure how Disney thought they would ever consider it.

I'm assuming it was calculated, knowing that the fanbase would jump on Disney's/MCU side by default, which is exactly what's happening.

I like money!

But the MCU has a far better handle on comic book adaptations than anyone else. The expanding MCU is always a joy to watch.

The DCU and other Spider-Man movies can’t seem to make a choice and stick with it.

Let’s hope we finally get that Rhino payoff from Amazing Spider-man 2! I mean he was set up so well. Not embarrassingly bad at all!

Already hitting the Gaming News.....https://www.gamesradar.com/spider-man-out-of-mcu/.....

Pretty odd timing since Sony announced the other day they snapped up Isominacic games who made the Spider Man game for the PS4 that did really well. Sorry but Disney has become just greedy...I hated it when they grabbed the Star Wars from Lucasfilm.

And I'm sure this asking for more had no bearing to this story.... Disney Whistle-Blower Told SEC The Company Inflated Revenue For Years..... https://www.marketwatch.com/story/di...ars-2019-08-19

For me as a figure collector. It also means no movie figures produced for any upcoming Spider-Man films
