Peele. I have not seen Midsommar, so can't comment on that. I think Get Out is a masterpiece and Us is right up there. Hereditary is basically a more contemporary version of Rosemary's Baby. When I finally watch Midommar it will be the director's cut.

So far for me, Aster. He doesn't seem to know how to stick the landing.

I haven't been a big fan of Peele's outings but I do like the concepts he touches on.

It's a complete toss-up for me. I think that, overall, Peele is the stronger director, but I feel that Aster's the better writer.

I hope that they both have very long, fruitful careers ahead of them. I'm excited to see what they do next.

Re: Jordan Peele or Ari Aster

I've been sitting on an idea for a similar thread, but was waiting for a couple movies to drop

Jordan Peele:

Get Out
Us

Ari Aster:

Hereditary
Midsommar

Robert Eggers:

The Witch
The Lighthouse

Panos Cosmatos:

Beyond The Black Rainbow
Mandy

Jennifer Kent:

The Babadook
The Nightingale

All 5 have only directed 2 movies. All 5 have had critical success making a horror movie. All 5 made their feature debut this decade.

'Hereditary' was extraordinary. 'Get Out' was entertaining, 'Us' was downright stupid.
Aster by far.

Between the two the OP listed I’d say Peele. I thought Get Out was severely overrated, but I hated Hereditary.

As for Hazel’s five, it’s Panos by a country mile.

I haven't seen Midsommar yet, but I thought Hereditary was very good, so I'm optimistic.

Get Out was terrific, but Us was boring, nonsensical, and overrated. And it sounds like Twilight Zone is fairly uninspired.

I think Aster shows more promise at this point.

Twilight Zone is pretty weak but it seems apparent it's more Kinberg than Peele there.

Aster is 2/2 with me.

I think Peele is talented but hated Get Out and haven't seen Us.

Re: Jordan Peele or Ari Aster

In regards to development, I'd have to say Jordan Peele.

Ari Aster, starting with his Short Films, has been very consistent for me.

For Peele working in the Horror Genre, I absolutely loved Get Out but felt like Us was a half a mis-step.

If you hated "Get Out" then I think you'll really hate "Us"

Surprisingly I know quite a few people that didn't like Get Out but enjoyed Us

I think it's worth giving both a chance regardless.

Re: Jordan Peele or Ari Aster

Haven't seen Us just yet, but with Get Out, Peele demonstrated a virtuosic knowledge of film language and classical suspense technique. I hope he stays in the genre. Hereditary, which I liked, didn't have nearly as strong a directorial stamp on it. I have not seen Midsommar yet.
