Has there been a genuine Action Horror movie ?

With a proper strong horror component and NOT just killing zombies/monsters like Resident Evil or Zombie movies

Proper action, but also proper scary atmospheric horror

Some parts of Aliens probably comes closest

ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND (1980), directed by and starring Sammo Hung. This is considered by many fans to have been a model for Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD.

Many Hong Kong horror films from the 1970s and '80s had a high kung fu quotient. Others I'm recalling offhand are BLACK MAGIC, BLACK MAGIC II, a series of MR. VAMPIRE films and the CHINESE GHOST STORY trilogy. I could be wrong because it's been years since I've seen them, but I don't believe any of these had as much action as ENCOUNTERS OF THE SPOOKY KIND.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it but would Schwarzenegger’s End of Days count?

Maybe Tom Cruise’s Mummy movie?

I think that fits. In the same general area, Constantine.

I'm not sure if Horror-Action-Comedies also count (like Shaun, Cabin, Tucker & Dale, etc.) but they're not bad choices.

We definitely need more of this blend though (without Comedy being a main factor).

Versus
No One Lives

Funny enough, they're both directed by the same person.

If you eliminate monsters/zombies, it's hard to think of many.

Deathproof
Joy Ride movies*
The Hitcher
Mad Max movies
Duel

*It's been awhile, can't remember if there's much action in these.

I would definitely say the Evil Deads are closer than Zombie movies

There's some damnright scary moments in some of the evil dead movies and plenty of action

I don't believe comedies in the mix can count, you can't have true horror with comedy

Silent Rage

HELLBOUND was his other horror action movie.

Maybe Attack the Block. Switchblade Romance or Haute Tension or High Tension had a lot of action after the twist. And really great horror movie...

I wouldn’t mind a straight rapture movie like that one American Dad episode.

End of Days is the only example I can think of. It was Peter Hyams and did the best if could with being an Arnie actioner.

Probably no one has seen it. But ultra violent, little creepy, little funny, and crazy good.

Yeah, I didn't even read any posts but as soon as I saw the thread title Aliens was the first film that came to mind...I guess my next would be The Descent...that's a solid action/horror movie...

Good call, stinger--that's one of the first ones that popped into my head. I'll also nominate the Jeepers Creepers films, Monster Man, and Race with the Devil.

I'd consider From Dusk Til Dawn and Planet Terror action horror movies.

Re: Has there been a genuine Action Horror movie ?

I guess REC2 is a horror film, but it sure is wall-to-wall action. The others in that series are too, but not to the same degree. And since Aliens was mentioned up above, and REC2 is practically a remake, well . . .

Don’t know if it counts as a whole but Blade has one of the best jump scares ever imo.
