Tenet (2020, D: Nolan) -- S: Washington, Pattinson, Debicki -- The Spoiler-filled Reviews Thread

John David Washington is the new Protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s original sci-fi action spectacle “Tenet.”

Armed with only one word—Tenet—and fighting for the survival of the entire world, the Protagonist journeys through a twilight world of international espionage on a mission that will unfold in something beyond real time.

Not time travel. Inversion.

The international cast of “Tenet” also includes Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Martin Donovan, Fiona Dourif, Yuri Kolokolnikov, Himesh Patel, Clémence Poésy, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with Michael Caine and Kenneth Branagh.

Trailer

Running Time: 150 minutes

Budget: Between $200 to 225M

Rotten Tomatoes Score: 77% as of 9/2/20

https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/tenet

This opens in most markets as of tomorrow. It has already had special preview screenings across the country. The Tenet Pre-release thread already has commentary from some of you.

This will actually open in San Diego, CA theatres this weekend. New Jersey theatres will also show this as well. NY and LA are still closed.

Please feel free to talk open spoilers in this thread for those who saw it or will see it this weekend without spoiler tags.

Again, this is for discussion of the movie for those who saw it. As a courtesy, please don't include personal commentary on Covid or your personal health decisions.

Hopefully if all goes well, theatres in my area will open in a few weeks.

Re: Tenet (2020, D: Nolan) -- S: Washington, Pattinson, Debicki -- The Spoiler-filled Reviews Thread

I like how Nolan acknowledges that he's so bad at getting good reactions from crowds of extras in a scene that, this time around, he gasses them as quickly as he can so all they have to do is act asleep.

Overall this was ok. Not the best Nolan movie, definitely the most Nolan Nolan movie. The kind of film that practically begs the audience to decipher its more difficult scenes, but isn't necessarily interesting enough to bother. Like, the last major set piece was kind of bland and although there was a lot going on, it doesn't exactly amount to much beyond 'mission accomplished.' (though the shot of the one exploded building coming back together only to have a different part of it explode again was neato).

It was entertaining though. Nolan does heists like the best of the best, but it's some of the other stuff that's just kind of... meh. All of the acting was very good (I especially liked KB as the villain), though some of the humor was cringey ("I ordered my hot sauce an hour ago!" WTF...). Also thought Pattinson was great (as he has proven to be in a bunch of roles now), and given the complexity of his role in particular, he really shines.

So it sounds like he hasn't gotten better at action sequences. I remember the Bond-ish snow sequences in Inception were snoozers but I was otherwise caught up in the movie.

Yeah that James Bond snow scene. Oh lord. Amazing set. The scene is incomprehensibly edited. Such a missed opportunity.

I heard on the radio that theaters are open in 45 states. But are any big chains open? Regal? AMC? Are they 100% closed or have some of them opened?

All the AMCs and Cinemarks near me (Connecticut) are open. The one Regal near me in Massachusetts is open as well.

i was actually thinking for a second about going to Danbury, CT, which is maybe 35 minutes from me in Hudson Valley, NY, but then the outbreak and that definitely scared me off.

Regal, AMC and Cinemark are all open now. San Diego county just opened theaters yesterday. Regal is already open and AMC opens Friday. Once they got the state approval, they wanted to get open in time for Tenet.

Yeah, Danbury did have a bit of an outbreak recently, but I think it's been mostly contained and their numbers are still very good compared to most of the country. Last I heard they had dipped below 3% positivity. They're just out of whack in relation to where the state is overall (<1%). I'd be inclined to say it's probably fine to go if you want, but give it a week or two and it will be even safer. I've never been to that theater before, so I don't know if it's worth the trip or not.

If you're gonna forget a town in Connecticut, forget Danbury, because... and this is true... Fuck Danbury.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for Danbury.

To get things back on topic, I already posted my thoughts on Tenet in the other thread, but I concur with pretty much everything Dan said upthread. His thoughts on the final battle were spot on. The shot of the building exploding twice is pretty much the only thing I remember. I still mostly liked the movie and hope to catch it again in Dolby Cinema.

This was a really fucking cool movie. Not sure what I was watching but damn it looked cool.

Probably the loudest IMAX movie I have ever seen too.

Also Nolan really really needs to mix his dialogue and music better.

B+

If I can ever watch it again and hear all the dialogue it might go up to a A-

Saw this yesterday at a Cinemark Theater that recently re-opened and I agree with you here.

I might in the minority but I thought John David Washington was fine in his role, he felt a bit flat compared to Pattinson, who I also thought was great in the film.

I quite liked it. I echo with the comment of I’m not sure what I saw, but it was damn entertaining. I agree the dialogue was hard to make out at times, but I got the gist. I keep hearing it’s LOUD, but I skipped the IMAX and went for the Dolby Cinema, and while loud, it wasn’t as loud as my experience with Inception IMAX. Like Inception, Nolan creates another mind-bending thriller that is very disorienting yet I enjoyed the ride. The cast is very good here. I loved the film score, which got me into gear from very first scene. I plan to see it again soon.

Something I forgot to point out when I posted my thoughts on the other thread is that I thought the soundtrack was excellent. It’s by Ludwig Goransson, the same guy who did the music for The Mandalorian.

Entertaining....but no clue WTF I just watched.

I will say.... bring on the fucking The Batman. Maybe the whole point of this film was to get the audience onboard with Pattinson as Batman. If so... Mission Accomplished.

At some points I thought he borrowed music from Sicario 2.

There’s music in Sicario 2? Don’t recall.

Haha...no. Music didn’t catch my attention during the movie. Tenet’s did.

Watched it in IMAX today. Thought it was pretty good though hard to fully follow. Liked it much more than Interstellar and just a bit less than Dunkirk. Some truly jaw dropping set pieces in IMAX. That highway heist was truly spectacular. As were Elizabeth Debicki’s legs. Thought Branagh was much better and more menacing than I had expected.
Feel like this is a movie you appreciate more on a second viewing.
The poster certainly makes more sense after you’ve seen the film.

PSA: You see a lot more than just her legs in The Burnt Orange Heresy.

I have never even heard of The Burnt Orange Heresy. That is...interesting. Reading descriptions, it’s a movie about crime in the world of art dealing, which makes it a weird double-double for Debicki in 2020.
I read that she was cast as Princess Diana in an upcoming project. She’s maybe a little tall for the part, but otherwise seems like a good choice. She is elegant enough. Ironically, Kristen Stewart has also been cast as Diana and is too short.

Here’s an IGN video explaining the ending of Tenet and doing a pretty good job of it in five minutes.

Re: Tenet (2020, D: Nolan) -- S: Washington, Pattinson, Debicki -- The Spoiler-filled Reviews Thread

I liked this quite a bit but Nolan really needs to let other people do a once over on his scripts or he needs to just make 6 episode mini series instead of 2.5 hour movies that feel like they were cut from longer ones. You can make a complicated story without the dialog sounding like speaker wiring instructions.

The talking gets so dense near the end that it's almost comical, and the masks didn't entirely help in tracking who was who but at least it was pretty easy to figure out. Some cool visuals in the final battle.

That said, the movie is pretty straight forward overall, it's also a bit silly but I had fun with it.
Spoiler:
the algorithm reminded me of something off Lost or Alias. I also thought it was funny that if she would have just let him take the pill they'd all be fine, since that shit apparently doesn't kill you. Unless that was just the one pill the one time. Also thought it was odd that she was going all out to get away from a guy with pancreatic cancer, seems like it'd be self limiting.
