Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

Mark Ruffalo will star opposite Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ upcoming adaptation of “Poor Things,” from Searchlight Pictures, Film 4 and Element Pictures.

Ruffalo, an Emmy winner and three-time Oscar nominee, joins Oscar winner Stone and four-time nominee Willem Dafoe in the film adaptation of Alasdair Grey’s novel.

Lanthimos will direct and produce the film from a script by Tony McNamara, after pairing on “The Favourite,” for which McNamara earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing the screenplay.

“Poor Things” is a Frankenstein-esque tale set in the Victorian-era, described as a story of “love, discovery and scientific daring,” focusing on a young woman named Belle Baxter (Stone) brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist.

Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe of Element Pictures, which has produced all of Lanthimos’ English-language films (“The Lobster,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” and “The Favorite”), as well as “Room” and Hulu’s “Normal People,” will produce the film. In addition to starring in the film, Stone will produce the project, under her Fruit Tree banner.

Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

In Theaters September 8th

From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

Looks like some drugs need to be done before seeing this. Lol

Glad they aren’t saving this for Oscar season. Love the release date.

Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

Even though the film is set to make its world premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival, Searchlight Pictures’ Poor Things from director Yorgos Lanthimos is delaying its release and will now open in theaters on Dec. 8. The film, which was originally set to open on Sept. 8, stars Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe with Lanthimos directing.

At the film’s official presser this afternoon, one topic continually raised by journalists in the room was sex, particularly how Lanthimos approached the film’s many sex scenes with his lead, Emma Stone. Throughout the film, Stone’s character features in multiple sex scenes and appears fully nude.

Oh. Neat.

Can’t actually open the link because I am in Italy at the moment, but I couldn’t help but notice that “graphic sex scenes” is in the title. RT also lists “graphic nudity” in the rating advisories. Interesting.

Just from reading the review blurbs on RT (still 100%), this looks to be fascinating. I especially liked this blurb from Justin Chang:

A drama of female empowerment and prosthetic dismemberment rolled into one, it may be the first Lanthimos movie in which this unsparing filmmaker doesn’t just slice his characters open but actually likes what he sees.

Saw this tonight. Really interesting and well made film. Starts very fun and creatively then goes to some really dark places. I think I admired it more than I liked it. Well worth seeing. And OMG is there a lot of Emma Stone nudity. Makes Florence Pugh look like a prude in Oppenheimer. It’s used a lot for shock effect, never really luridly or sexy. Kudos to Emma for being that brave. And she gives an impressive and fascinating performance throughout. And Mark Ruffalo is hysterical.

Easily one of the best films of the year. Another winner from Lanthimos and a big step up in his scope. Just a funny, strange, interesting film.

Stone will be nominated and I guess it will be between her and Gladstone. This should be a lock for production design.

This was an incredible production with a great performance by Stone, but I gotta admit I thought it was kind of a slog. I was totally onboard for the first hour or so, laughing hysterically, but at some point in the second half I veered off the movie's course and was never able to get back. I probably saw it too late in the evening. That's becoming a real problem for me. Getting old sucks.

Fresh out of seeing this so I might be jumping the gun a bit, but I think Poor Things might break the tie I had going for best film of the year between Oppenheimer and KOTFM. I absolutely loved this from beginning to end. It puts to shame everything else Lanthimos has done so far. And what can I say, Willem Dafoe should be publicly declared best actor on planet earth. Emma Stone and Ruffalo are no slouches either. Great stuff. For now 4.5/5.

Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

I'll agree with rocket that it runs a bit long, but I won't be quite as harsh on the back half of the movie. I think they could have cut some out of the middle with Mark Ruffalo. We got the point with his arc very early, but then they just kept with it too long.

Overall though, I really liked it! Plus, it was funny watching the old couples walk out (three different couples did at various points).

Stone was magnificent and will get an Oscar nod. The make up on DaFoe was excellent, and his character brings us a neat little "What if ... ?" to the end of Frankenstein. I really appreciate they didn't go the Frankenstein route though (god, that trailer for Lucy Frankenstein looks awful). The set design is not terribly original, but is definitely beautiful!

Has anybody read the book? Just curious about how they compare.

What a progression by Lanthimos. Must admit, I initially found his work a little off putting but once you realize what's he's going for and seeing the development; hard not to be impressed. Guy has turned into like a weird Wes Anderson/Terry Gilliam hybrid operating at a high level. Maybe a little Tim Burton and Jeunet in there as well (without their deficiencies).

Time to probably recognize Emma Stone is a genius level talent. Can't see almost anyone else pulling this role off. She had to elicit so many emotions from the viewer (and likewise the God, Max and Duncan characters) for this to even remotely work.

I feel insane seeing the hype for this. Walked out of a theater for the fourth time in my life at the halfway point. Went in blind and was never expecting Emma Stone channeling Simple Jack in a pedophilic Gilliam knockoff. Absolute trash. Lanthimos is the biggest conman working today.

My local theatre just got this on Friday. I'm on the fence about going, because the weather is shit, and I feel like I'll be able to stream it within the next week or two...

Re: Poor Things (2023, D: Lanthimos) S: Stone, Ruffalo, Dafoe

I finally saw this last night, and was generally disappointed. I mean, it's fine, but certainly not worthy of all the attention it has been getting. Had I seen it before all the Best Actress/Oscar hype, I may have enjoyed it more...but there's not a whole lot here - the movie is kind of pretentious in thinking it's far more witty than it actually is. I liked the costume and set design, but hate the way Yorgos always uses (via cinematographer Robbie Ryan) the 8mm fisheye lens. He thinks he's being creative/artsy, but it just makes the movie look awful and distracting. It's basically a mash of Frankenstein, Barbie, a porn movie, and a David Lynch film, honestly. I hated The Favorite, so I'm not surprised I didn't care for this one much - although I did like it more than The Favorite, so I guess that's an improvement.
