The Holdovers (2023, D: Payne) S: Giamatti

Re: The Holdovers (2023, D: Payne) S: Giamatti
I thought this was lovely and a welcome slice of the past, but ultimately I think it's a bit too predictable and cloying to be great. There are for sure many pleasures to be had, and I think they're all in the little things. It's the unspoken stuff bubbling under the surface that interested me. I also loved the sense of time and place, though I did have to laugh a little when the rich kid's dad was going to pick him up in his helicopter and fly him to ski at Haystack. Maybe it was different in the 70's, but I skiied Haystack many times in the 80's and 90's and while it was a nice little mountain, it was hardly the sort of place you'd expect someone to land their private helicopter.
And what was with Da'Vine Joy Randolph's accent? I've lived in New England my entire life and I've never heard anyone talk like that. It was so bad to my ears that I almost think it must have been some super specific localized version of the Boston accent that I'm just not familiar with.
Made clear by the fact that the lazy eye noticeably switches sides throughout the course of the movie. Or maybe it only switched for the "you're supposed to look at this one" scene. I'm not sure, but it definitely went from right to left and back to right again during that part of the movie.

Saw it tonight and really enjoyed it. All three leads are great. I thought it was touching and effective. Too much spoiled in the trailer, but that’s not Payne’s fault. One of my favorites of the year.

Is Paul Hunham as close as we will ever get to a cinematic portrayal of zyzzle?

Overall thought it was great, very old school and intimate. I hope it's successful. The leads were all great, especially Da'Vine, and yes, the eye switched sides throughout the movie, just not at the end.

So did anyone notice something intentionally technical with this? I’ll give you a hint, if you saw it in a theater for once nobody messed up the sound there.

I'm just happy Payne resisted the temptation to add change-over-reel marks.

Wonderful, absolutely wonderful movie. I was quite taken by the story and the characters. Giamatti and that kid Sessa (Tully), i think, they were so great. Alexander Payne can do no wrong in my book. This movie just opens your heart and tugs at the strings. Just wonderful.

Great film...Giamatti at his best (and a "Billions" reunion, though I can't recall if Paul and Kelly AuCoin ever shared a scene in the show)

Wow, what a wonderful film. So full of heart. Brought me to tears a few times. I didn't know that Payne didn't write the screenplay. He's written them for most of his films. It had his fingerprints all over it. Clearly this one will get Oscar nominations for Best Film, Actor, supporting Actress, Screenplay and maybe Director. That one is a crowded field. One of 2023's very best. Top 5 for me.

Saw this a second time today when I took my mom to see it. Loved it just as much. In fact, I noticed some neat little details foreshadowing scenes to come.

Here’s a fun one if you noticed: The school priest at the beginning and the bartender at the bowling alley are the same actor. The actor auditioned for both parts and Payne decided he was the best person for both.

I enjoyed this. It had a nice feel to it with some good performances and solid writing.
I didn't like that Payne faked the 70s film stock look. All he needs to do is make movie feel like it was set in the 70s, not try and make the audience feel like they're living in the 70s and watching a film from that era. Two totally different things.

I thought this movie was going to be ok but I loved it!
The performances were great plus I am a sucker for movies set in snow and Winter.
If it has a huge Oscar haul I am all for it and Payne deserves to finally win that elusive best director award and Giamatti should finally get the best actor award.
I will add this to my Blu-ray collection.

The Blu-ray is out of stock at Amazon and Wal-Mart and not showing up on Bestbuy.com
Maybe a low print run or a manufacting flaw that needs to be corrected?

Probably a low print run, same issue with Oppenheimer.
On that note, checking Amazon, even the vinyl release presentation looks like it’s right out of the 70s. And there’s a little note on the back reading “This recording is available for digital download, whatever the heck that is”.

Just a lovely movie. I hope Giamatti pulls off a best actor Oscar win although I also loved Cillian (and praying Cooper doesn’t win).
also thought Dominic Sessa was fantastic, I could see him becoming a big star, he had a strong charisma and held his own with Giamatti nicely.
