Yeah I mean that sounds like a pretty good cover story if it were plagiarized from this guy's script. In a more idiotic situation, some guy sued WB for plagiarizing League of Extraordinary Gentlemen from whatever story he did. But he went even further and claimed that WB hired Alan Moore to write his comic to make it look like they were adapting the comic while 'stealing' the guy's work. Moore was understandably pissed about having to testify on this (and about the movie too).

Those "similarities" between scripts are laughable. The complete written document about the similarities is even more laughable. Sounds like someone just has a grudge against Payne because he didn't do that script and did something of his own. I mean, you could literally find a half dozen older movies that compare closer to The Holdovers than Stephenson's script/story.

Great movie. Fantastic piece of filmmaking. Other than the conceit of creating a movie that looked and felt straight out of 1971, there were no big gimmicks to be found here. No big melodramatic moments, no post-modern meta-narrative gotchaisms, no smirky condescension to the world or its characters. Just a simple story, masterfully told.
Before watching the film lat night, I admit to scoffing cynically when DaVine Joy Randolph won the Supporting Actress Oscar, since apparently that's become the "heavyset black actress" category of late. But ZOWIE she was so good in this movie. Very natural, sympathetic, heartbreaking, uplifting, but always so real. A testament to "less is more" in selling emotional verisimilitude. She nailed it.

I've been a fan since the first time I saw her in the TV adaptation of High Fidelity in the Jack Black role.

Always interesting to see an effects reel on a film like this:
