If she's portraying the character as a small girl through digital trickery, that just sounds like a distracting and expensive route to go for this one. However, I think she's perfect for the role (and was my top choice) if they make it to Children of Dune and we see Alia becoming corrupted and unhinged. One of my favorite scenes in that book is the confrontation between these two:

"You will have a corner in hell!"

As far as that character goes...

Spoiler:
maybe they'll shrink her down through CGI and/or Hobbit-style forced perspective. The idea behind the Alia is that she's an adult Bene Gesserit in the body of a child.

^ It'll probably be fine, but

Spoiler:
I just assumed they'd age her up a few years like the previous film/tv versions and cast an eight-year-old who could act mature. When imagining Anya Taylor-Joy's face being CG-ed onto a toddler-sized body, I keep thinking about that freaky Renesmee doll they decided not to use in the last Twilight movie.

There's at least one in there that mentions some meandering spots or such, so not completely glowing praise.

Great reason to justify a 75"+ 4K television.

Was hoping for just a tad over 3hrs, but I'll take 2hrs 40mins, thank-you.

Probably won't be getting a large screen for many more years, but my new C3 48" will do me just fine watching the two parts, back to back.

Naw. Part I and Part II combine to be Dune. The third part would be Dune Messiah which would be the true sequel.

And Messiah has not yet been greenlit and it’s a few years after the first book so Denis may wait a little bit for Timothee and Zendaya to age up or the studio may want to strike while the iron is hot and just do it right away.

I doubt they'd do a delay with the cast they have assembled. Plus Paul is supposed to be like 15 in Dune and I believe he's still shy of 30 in Messiah which lines up well with the actors actual ages.

I remember watching Part 1 without being confident there was even going to be a Part 2! Anything after the second one is a bonus for me.

Actually, I really need to revisit the first movie because I watched it through eyes of there possibly being no conclusion.

Just looking at the physical size of the books, that checks out.

(Not my copies, pic stolen from the internet.)

Probably. Of course, I have a lot of paperbacks that are well loved and well read also and they don’t look bent to shit. I suppose if that person reads every day on the subway or swats gnats with them, then yeah, that’s how they’re supposed to look.

I highly recommend rewatching Part 1 before watching Part 2. A lot of stuff I forgot from the first one.

I flat out missed a lot of stuff on my first watch despite clinging on to every word. Mostly with little single lines of background/foreshadowing with the Bene Gesserit (never actually read the book)

Re: Dune: Part Two (2024, D: Villeneuve) 2une: I Could Dune This All Day

All of the raise has me hoping the Oscar people can still remember this movie over a year later. I think only Silence of the Lambs and Everything Everywhere All at Once have been releases to come out close to a year before the ceremony where they won in recent times. IIRC, the original Godfather came about a year before its win, but that was back when prints were more like a traveling show and it may not have made some towns until the following autumn.

In terms of Taylor-Joy
Spoiler:
she was my pick for the older Alia before the first movie was released, and so was Pugh for Irulan. In fact, they were the ones I mentally pictured in the roles when I was reading Messiah. I am curious how they will handle her in this movie. One thing they didn't do in the first movie that needs to happen in this one is the revelation that the Baron is Jessica's father, as that plays a major part in Children of Dune in terms of how Alia develops. My understanding is that Villeneuve has made this movie to both end the first book and then set up Messiah, so there's a chance we get a time jump to her at the end of this one. CG'ing her face onto the body of a child seems...creepy.

I do wonder if that plan is going to delay the Oscar harvest for Villeneuve. Like how the Academy waited to award Peter Jackson until he "landed" the LOTR trilogy.

But Messiah is not Part 3 . . . It is a sequel.

Having read Dune Messiah, I don't think it's really going to be Oscar Bait.

Unlike Lord of the Rings, the Dune novels are all self-contained, and Messiah is very much a sequel, unlike Return of the King.

And there is some good stuff in Herbert's later Dune novels, but the returns definitely diminish with each entry. If asked, I'll generally tell people to read the original novel, and to either skip the others or proceed with caution.

I think Children of Dune is a good endpoint for most readers. Things get tedious and really weird in God Emperor of Dune.

Judging from those photos , especially the one with Ferguson, she's definitely Alia. ATJ really does look like a princess when she makes public appearances.
