Civil War (2024, D: Garland) S: Dunst, Spaeny, Moura

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina, Men) is reteaming with A24 for Civil War, an action epic that has Kirsten Dunst (The Power of the Dog, The Beguiled) set to star alongside Wagner Moura (The Shining Girls, Narcos), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune, Bruised) and Cailee Spaeny (The First Lady, Mare of Easttown).

Garland will direct the film set in a near-future America from his original screenplay. Details as far as its plot are being kept under wraps.

A24 will produce, alongside Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA and Gregory Goodman, and handle the film’s global release.

I guess it was only a matter of time before a movie like this was made.

“A24” is enough to at least make me interested.

Definitely interested in Garland going back to something a little less abstract after Men.

That was a solid trailer.

I can't wait for chuds (probably the same ones who miss the point of Fight Club, American Psycho, and The Matrix) online to be like "Wow, that actually sounds like a great idea".

Definitely interested in the politics of this one. Not just like, who the bad guys are, but the speculative/alternate history aspects.

That seems like it should be about 5 hours long.

There a similar flick, saw it on Netflix. It's pretty bleak.

^That sounds a lot like it.

Probably can play Leave The World Behind and this back to back...this is what happens next.

So does Nick Offerman as President (how has he not been mentioned in this thread so far?)

Yeah, this could easily be the follow up to LTWB.

Bushwick was very bleak, but was politically straight forward

I love this movie. It loses its seriousness a few times (including the ending). It was overlooked for sure. Aesop Rock score too.

In the context of "real life". I mean, maybe. People were pretty worried Red Dawn was going to be real at some point. We haven't been invaded yet. Though we seem to be cool with the Russkies expanding territory lately.

Looks pretty good. Would be down for an overly satirical take on the topic at some point too.

This movie stands a really good chance of not being received…..healthily.

That looks pretty good and looks like quite a big movie for a small studio like A24. There seems to be a lot of special effects as well.

Not surprised to see Dunst's husband "Fat Damon" in a supporting role. Jesse Plemons.

Reportedly $75 million. Their highest production yet and part of strategic shift.

Yeah, A24 just announced their adaptation is of the game Death Stranding, which has a similar Civil War theme but is also just a thoroughly bizarre walking simulator.

Hope their venture into the big budget doesn't sink them, but I'm glad to see someone out there going for the mid-budget movies (I don't know what counts as mid-budget anymore - hell The Matrix, Fight Club were both $63m films but that was 25 years ago).

Even if you count in inflation the cost of making a big budget movie has skyrocketed. 63m in 1999 would be 116m now. The Matrix Resurrections did cost 190m.

Saw the trailer for this before Iron Claw last night. I hadn't heard of it so I'm excited for it now.
