Mila Kunis will be one of the presenters at the Oscars. Imagine she will talked about the Ukraine war which she was born.

So is this all just about Spider-Man? Is the Academy suddenly "in touch" with that one single nomination?
I can’t help it was a shit movie year - but those that did the most heavy lifting in that shit year should get the consideration.

Though Encanto should have been a Best Picture nominee too.

Or we have another year of poor ratings.

I'm sure Spider-Man was under consideration. It just didn't make the cut. For all we know it was #11. Besides, you can probably count the number of times in the last 50 years the yearly box office champ has been nominated for best pic on one hand. The Academy has never been beholden to the box office and it never used to matter. Should they have acknowledged Spider-Man? Sure. Maybe. Why not. Would it make any noticable difference in the ratings or the continued erosion of movie culture? Not likely.

I don't think the taped delayed thing is really that big of a deal, to be honest.

And I do think we're at the point where the general public do not care about the Oscars. Spider-Man getting a nom, even winning best picture. I don't think they care.

And honestly? I'm not sure how much I do anymore

Hell, every other person on stage will probably mention Ukraine. Probably will add another 15 or 20 minutes to the show based on Ukraine comments alone.

Fair enough. I should have said 40 years. I would have been a lot closer! I got a little mixed up because some of those are December releases that made the bulk of their money in the next calendar year. And I'm pretty sure T2 was highest grossing in 1991. Also totally forgot Raiders got a best picture nomination.

Edit: and wasn't Home Alone the champ in 1990?

Edit 2: and Exorcist in 1973

Home Alone made more world-wide, but in North America Ghost was number 1.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards

It would be nice if NBC or CBS got the rights to the Oscars and could change the format of the show or put pressure on the Academy to space out the major awards and not have 90 minutes of the smaller awards and then rush and throw in all the big awards in the last 10 minutes

I looked at two different sites. There were a few discrepancies. In such cases, if either was a BP nominee I included it as you could plausibiy say that the year's Box Office champ was a BP nominee that year.

Could be, I just recalled that it was one or the other.

EDIT: Trying to look it up on wikipedia and box office mojo is giving me a headache because the numbers are contradicting. Who knows.

Among others I’ve never even heard of. They were listed in Decker’s post on the previous page. Who the fuck is H.E.R.? I thought the tweet said H.&.R. and the only results I got back were for H&R Block.

Again, why would NBC or CBS want it? It’s how the Academy operates and the decisions they make that cause all of these issues.

And don’t they normally space out the big acting awards? Best Picture should be last and Best Director should be near it. Otherwise I think it’s usually pretty spread out.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards

The fact that there is so much content coming at you from every direction is part of the reason the ratings have been declining. The same can be said for network television in general. But then again the Super Bowl still does huge numbers. Honestly though, when it comes to the Oscars, I think the blame needs to be shouldered almost entirely by the studios themselves. Stellan Skarsgard hit the nail on the head in an interview he did talking about the death of the mid budget movie. If it wasn’t for older audiences coming back to theaters slower than younger ones, I think a film like The Last Duel would be have been a sure fire awards contender. But more and more all the big theaters show is the franchise/instant name recognition stuff. I mean after Silence bombed, even Scorsese had to go to Netflix for The Irishman. With Ridley Scott having 2 high profile bombs this year, he’s probably in the same boat.

There’s not really much in between anymore. You’re either a blockbuster, or a small art house film that gets a week in theaters or only plays at whatever is left of independent theaters. The problem, when you really boil it down, is that Hollywood doesn’t really make Oscar films anymore. And after 2 years of Covid where the only films that made money were the ones with someone wearing a cape, it’s only going to get worse.

Oh I thought they always did one of the supporting actor awards in the first half hour, then it’s like 90 minutes of nothing, and I thought Actor, Actress, Director and Picture were squeezed into the final 30 mins.

I never liked that.

Re: 2022 Academy Awards

What I think they should do is make it a 5+ hour event with all the razzle dazzle, but for streaming. Get the streaming views and the ad content that way. Then ABC can cut it into a 2.5-3 hour showcase for the television viewing.

It's still a three-hour broadcast, but now with a lot of the categories being presented separately. I can't wait to see what useless nonsense they use to fill the time.

German TV did it that way. They showed the Oscars live but its at 3am and an edited version at 8pm.
