The 4:30 Movie (2024, D: Kevin Smith)

Soooo, Kevin Smith purchased the movie theatre he used to go to when he was a kid and he's announced some of the plans for it. This includes a film school, Marvel premiers, indie screenings annnnnd using the theatre as backdrop to a film he wants to shoot next year called The 4:30 Movie.

From his instagram post:
"Does this all mean my movies have gotten so bad that I had to buy my own theater just to show 'em? Maybe. But this dramatic development has already paid creative dividends: remember that script I just finished? I started writing it because we're about to own a movie theater – so I figured 'Why not shoot a movie AT your new movie theater?' Set in 1986, the flick's entitled THE 4:30 MOVIE and it follows 3 suburban teenagers as they theater hop a spring Sunday away, sneaking from flick to flick, like we did as kids. I'm looking to shoot that in 2023, after #theconveniencetour is over. And then next summer, we enter the world of higher learning. I always felt a movie theater during the day would best be used as an educational outlet. There's a screen at the front and chairs for students – just like in a classroom. So get ready for View Askewniversity: A @jayandsilentbob Film School! I may be 52, but in this theater? I'm like a kid again."

I don’t live too far from that theatre. I’m looking forward to seeing what type of events come out of it.

A threat of bomb threats.

Are we sure Kevin didn't just announce The 420 Movie?

I don’t like all his films, but of the ones that are really good, this premise fits right in that wheelhouse.

So, it’s basically going to be Mallrats set in a theater instead of a mall. I hope it’s more than that. Mallrats isn’t very good.

I grew up in the 80's and did stuff like this, but really it's nothing I felt nostalgic for. I doubt this will be something a lot of people will deem all that interesting either. But hey Kevin, you do you.

This was looking to start shooting already but the strikes got in the way. They applied for a waiver from SAG. Some more info about the film in the video.

He’s cast his daughters boyfriend as the lead character. The guy is a terrible actor and was one of the worst parts of Clerks III (Elias’ sidekick).

His daughter also turned down the lead actress role in the film.

This sounds like a disaster in the making.

Wouldn't be the first time he's borrowed from that movie. "Inter-species Erotica", anyone?

Oh, that's who that is? Makes sense. Bone a Smith, you get to be in a movie. Also explains the look she gives him at the end of Clerks III

Ugh, that's who that was? The scenes with him and Elias were among the worst parts of Clerks III, a film that I mostly overall liked, they were just cringe-worthy. (and I liked Elias' character in Clerks II).

re: The 4:30 Movie (2024, D: Kevin Smith)

EXCLUSIVE: Saban Films has acquired worldwide rights to The 4:30 Movie, the latest film written and directed by Kevin Smith (Clerks). The film marks the second collaboration for Saban and Smith, on the heels of 2019’s Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which scored one of the top-per theatre average openings of the year amongst titles like Parasite and Avengers: Endgame.

Set in the summer of 1986, the coming-of-age comedy follows three sixteen-year-old friends (played by Austin Zajur, Nicholas Cirillo and Reed Northrup) who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local multiplex. But when one of the guys also invites the girl of his dreams (Siena Agudong) to see the latest comedy, each of the teens will learn something serious about life and love before the credits roll.

The 4:30 Movie also stars Ken Jeong (The Hangover), Sam Richardson (Veep), Genesis Rodriguez (Tusk), Justin Long (Barbarian), Jason Lee (Almost Famous), Rachel Dratch (I Love My Dad), Kate Micucci (The Big Bang Theory), Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Harley Quinn Smith (Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood), and Method Man (Power Book II: Ghost).

Smith shot the film at his Smodcastle Cinemas in New Jersey — the same movie theater he haunted every weekend when he was a teenager, which he now co-owns. Liz Destro, Josh Bachove and Jordan Monsanto produced alongside EPs Bill Bromiley, Shanan Becker and Jonathan Saba. Smith is set to embark on a multi-city national tour with the movie this summer, with its rollout in theaters nationwide to follow.

“The day we bought Smodcastle Cinemas, I not only reclaimed an integral piece of my childhood, I also suddenly had access to a visually interesting and cost-free movie location!” Smith told Deadline of the genesis of his latest film. “So I started writing a personal paean to the past for us 70’s and 80’s kids – the pre-information generation who grew up without the Internet, when romance and relationships required much more than a swipe to get started, and the idea of asking out someone you had a crush on was as terrifying as the looming threat of nuclear war.”

Added Jonathan Saba, Chief Content Officer of Saban Films, “Kevin has been one of the defining voices in American Independent Cinema for 30 years now, and THE 4:30 MOVIE is like a Valentine to moviegoers from a lifelong film fan that also acts as his most personal production yet. This is our second of hopefully many movies together.”

Other recent acquisitions for Saban Films include Michael Keaton’s hitman thriller Knox Goes Away, thriller Butcher’s Crossing starring Nicolas Cage, action thriller Cult Killer starring Antonio Banderas and Alice Eve, Scandinavian thriller Good Boy, Darkness of Man starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and Stephen Lang and Harvey Keitel’s action thriller Hellfire.

Saba negotiated the deal for The 4:30 Movie on behalf of Saban Films, with Destro repping the filmmakers.
