Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023 D: Dos Santos, Powers, Thompson) -- The Spoiler Reviews Thread

Just got out of seeing it in a near full auditorium in Dolby. It was awesome and even better than the 1st movie IMO. Great action, very funny and it has a very complex and interesting story that never felt convoluted unless you're simply just not paying attention. The character moments were quite poignant. There were literally moments where I almost felt like I was watching a comic book coming to life. The animation was really good. It is long though.

One word of warning. It's not a "complete" movie. It ends on a pretty massive cliffhanger. So you won't have any sense of closure leaving and we all have to wait until 2024. I loved the Spider-man world that was showcased with all the different crazy variations of him including a T-Rex. Lots of funny cameos.

I did get the poster from AMC and they rubber banded all of them for the guests.

Fantastic sequel. The animation is gorgeous.

My crowd was audibly pissed. A lot of "what the fucks" when it ended and "to be continued" came up on screen. Maybe they shouldn't have changed the titles and removed the Part 1 and Part 2.

Re: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, D: Dos Santos/Powers/Thompson)

It's late so brief thoughts.

First, I would put Into the Spider-verse in my top 10 of this century. Just an amazing film all around.

Across the Spider-verse? It is indeed better, immensely better. "Into the Spider-verse" is an amazing Spider-man movie in the classic superhero sense. It's easily top 2 Spiderman movies going into tonight. "Across the Spider-verse" is an amazing character movie about Miles and Gwen that is set in the Spider-man / superhero genre. It feels like a totally different beast. Don't mistake that for thinking there's no Spider-man action like how Star Lord never made an appearance in Guardians 3. There is constant Spider-man action from the opening frame to the end credits. It's just different, and it feels like Lord and Miller just raised the bar on the entire genre. They've crafted two characters with more depth and charm than most superhero flicks with live actors. I'm going to totally oversell it here, and probably make some mad, but it's better than anything in the MCU.

Where the first film developed it's own unique style, this film amps it up and takes that style and perfects it. The film is literally a moving work of art. Each Earth has it's own unique style which is awesome, but Gwen's Earth was genuine art. Every frame is a gorgeous painting. I kept thinking "ooh, I want to pause this and get a screen grab for a wallpaper for my computer or phone."

The score was amazing, the soundtrack was equally fantastic.

In fact, there's only one minor negative I have. As awesome as the movie was, it felt like a long movie. The film really does pack in a ton and uses its runtime well so I'm going to chalk that up to it being long for an animated movie which I'm not used to.

Re: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, D: Dos Santos/Powers/Thompson)

My wife and I took our boys to see this tonight. The first was our oldest’s first theater movie and it’s been a standing favorite for both of them to watch at home. My wife really liked it, my boys liked it, but not as much as the original, and I was slightly disappointed.

It’s beautifully animated, but it didn’t hit its emotional beats as effectively as the first, at least for me. I also really didn’t like Miguel’s ‘canon’ motivation. That and some other parts felt meta for the sake of being meta, at the expense of the story. The first did a better job at working that type of stuff in organically. Still a solid outing, but a significant step below the original for me. To be fair, the original is probably my favorite Spider-man movie, so it’s a high bar to clear.

Man was this film great. Like a legitimate work of art. I was so impressed with it. Everything worked. I didn’t want it to end (though it became clear that the resolution would have to be in the next film). I just loved every part of it. Can’t wait to see it again.

Seeing this tonight in Dolby Cinema. I'm looking at the "after credit" app and it doesn't appear that it has any mid-after credit scenes at all.

Correct. The rare Marvel film with no post credit scene.

One of the most beautiful credit sequences ever though. ….

Re: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, D: Dos Santos/Powers/Thompson)

It was a smidge too long (especially when I could see that they weren't going to resolve anything) and I would have liked to have spent more time with the various Spider-People as that was my favorite part of the film. But the different animation styles continue to impress, I liked that there was more of a focus on Spider-Gwen and I'm looking forward to seeing it again where I can pause and check things out on the screen more.

Very enjoyable, I meant to revisit the first (which I liked but didn't love) but I think this easily surpasses it. Really appreciated the build up of the first half, the 2nd half of the film did feel a little truncated by comparison...maybe just some act structure pacing would be my only real criticism. Went in spoiler free but I was pretty confident we'd get the glimpses and cameos that we did. Glad we don't have too long to wait for Beyond!

Re: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, D: Dos Santos/Powers/Thompson)

This was an 8/10 for me, which normally I’d be ecstatic about and yet here I can’t help but feel slight disappointment. Unlike the first film, which I gave a 10/10, I admire it more than I loved it. On a technical-level it is astonishing. There is no denying that. As an artist I can’t even begin to fathom how they actually created some of these CGI and cell animation sequences together and interspersed so many art styles so effortlessly and organic throughout.

The movie is simply too long. There was no reason this needed to be 2 hours and 20 minutes.

Yeah, watched it last night, and when it ended on "to be continued" people let out a groan, like WTF! It reminded me of when Desolation of Smaug smash cuts to black at the end. Same shit here. Hopefully it doesn't take another 5 years for the next part.

I thought it was ballsy in that it used only one legacy villain. I never heard of The Spot before. I did like what they did with Vulture, though, that was badass.

Beyond the Spider-Verse has a release date of March 29, 2024. So you'll only have to wait about 9 months for it.

Re: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023, D: Dos Santos/Powers/Thompson)

We watched it on Saturday and we all loved it. God, what absolutely gorgeous animation, I often found it mesmerizing to stare at and I'm sure I missed some dialog because of the "distraction". Great, emotional story as well, damn good stuff! We heard a couple groans at the "to be continued" part as well, some guy loudly yelled "Come on!". The only thing that disappointed me was I didn't see the Japan Spider-man who I thought was supposed to be in this, I guess he shows up in the next one (hopefully Leopardon does as well!). Can't wait for part 2 next March!

I said the same thing at the end of Fellowship of the Ring and knew it was the first of 3 chapters It just seemed so abrupt

Not sure if it was just my theater but a lot of the backgrounds seemed really blurry. It looked like when you see a 3-D movie without the glasses. The foreground characters seemed pretty clear, though it seemed like there were a lot of weird patterns on them.

That's kind of the look of the movie - that 4-color-process bleed that comic books have.

That was really good. I had hoped for more of a resolution (I already knew there was a part 3 coming) but I can live with it knowing I only have a year to wait. Can't wait to own this so I can freeze frame and look at all the different versions of Spidey. Also, even though he wasn't "in" it, it was nice to see Noir there at the end.

Yeah, it's a stylistic choice. The first film had it in parts, and they dial it up and down as the scene dictates.

I found this example online, although I don't think the actual scene in the movie was this extreme. It's maybe a promo shot, but it gets the idea across:

I think Mile's home universe was where the deployed this the most, and the other universes has slightly different techniques used. For example, during Gwen's emotional speech with her dad near the end, I noticed that the "watercolor" background was getting progressively more runny the more tearful she was.

If this doesn't win the Best Picture Oscar for Animated, then the whole thing is a sham.

The first one did, so it's not like it is out of the question.
