The Bride (2025, D: M. Gyllenhaal) S: Bale, Cruz, Sarsgaard, Buckley

In somewhat unexpected but exciting news, we learned last summer that Maggie Gyllenhaal (The Dark Knight, Donnie Darko) is rumoured to be remaking the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein - and according to ProductionList.com, production is due to start very soon, in March of this year.

Even more exciting is the seemingly-confirmed cast list that includes Gyllenhaal's The Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale, Penélope Cruz, Jessie Buckley and Peter Sarsgaard.

A project summary listed on the site gives us more insight into who's playing who:
A horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein. With Cruz as the bride Myrna, Bale as Frankenstein, and Sarsgaard playing a detective.

For the unfamiliar, James Whale's 1935 original, The Bride of Frankenstein was a direct sequel to Whale's 1931 classic, Frankenstein. The film revolves around the iconic Dr. Frankenstein who is drawn into a plot by his former mentor, Doctor Septimus Pretorious, to create a mate for Frankenstein's monster.

Interestingly, Gyllenhaal's project was mentioned in John Mulaney's speech at the Governors Awards, where he jokes that he was asked to self-tape an audition.

It seems we're in the age of a Frankenstein renaissance - 2023 bought us birth/rebirth, Where the Devil Roams, Poor Things and The Angry Black Girl And Her Monster, while 2024 has already blessed us with the trailer for Zelda Williams' Lisa Frankenstein AND the exciting news that Jacob Elordi has joined the cast of Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Frankenstein (which is pretty much guaranteed to be excellent.)

The Bride will be Gyllenhaal's second feature film as a director following 2021's psychological drama, The Lost Daughter.

Hmmm. Given that I started teaching Frankenstein in one of my English classes this year, I should be excited by this Franke-ssaince. Given that very few of the movies relate directly to the book though …. Or even remotely, really …

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster and Poor Things were good movies, but not really Frankenstein. The trailer for Lisa Frankenstein reveals it is more Warm Bodies than Frankenstein (nor does it even look good). I’ll need to seek out the other two, but I’m just guessing by the name that birth/rebirth isn’t going to be Frankenstein either.

Damn. I was hoping they were specifically remaking this version.

Better yet, just re-release it.

Christian Bale is Frankenstein’s monster in a first look at Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride.” The director, who is teaming up with Warner Bros. for the period film, shared images on Instagram from a recent camera test for the movie. Bale’s monster makes his debut alongside Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter” Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley as the eponymous bride.

Gyllenhaal has assembled an all-star cast for “The Bride.” Starring opposite Bale and Buckley are Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard and Annette Bening. The film’s crew includes “Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher.

“The Bride” is set in 1930s Chicago and puts a spin on the iconic Frankenstein lore. Buckley’s murdered young woman is revived, but her new life surprises her creators as she lusts for romance and ignites a radical social movement. Along with the first look at Bale, Gyllenhaal also teased a photo of Buckley’s bride.

The film is Gyllenhaal’s second directorial effort. Her first was “The Lost Daughter,” which Netflix released to acclaim in 2021. The movie earned three nominations at the 94th Academy Awards: best actress (Olivia Colman), best supporting actress (Buckley) and best adapted screenplay.

Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride” isn’t the only Frankenstein movie on the way. Guillermo del Toro is currently filming his own Frankenstein, starring “Euphoria” and “Saltburn” star Jacob Elordi as the iconic monster. Del Toro’s film is backed by Netflix and features Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley Christian Convery, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz.

Warner Bros. is set to release Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!” in theaters and Imax on October 2, 2025.

Looks like Bale lost a shitload of weight again.

I’m both really curious about this and worried.

Bale as the monster is super intriguing but a “Leto Joker” tatted up Frankenstein’s monster is a bit concerning.
