The Matrix -- new film from Drew Goddard
The Martian Adapted Screenplay nominee and The Cabin in the Woods filmmaker Drew Goddard has been set to write and direct a new Matrix movie at Warner Bros. with the franchise’s original co-scribe and co-director Lana Wachowski executive producing.
It’s still early days in regards to whether core castmembers Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith are coming back.
Goddard will produce with partner Sarah Esberg (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) via their Goddard Textiles banner.
Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production said “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
Said Goddard, “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
For those who’ve never seen a Matrix movie, the original movie follows a computer hacker, beaten down by a humdrum day job, who is lured by beautiful stranger into a cyber underworld where a greater war is going on with the real world. The movie revolutionized filmmaking VFX with its 120 camera, bullet-time green screen action sequence.
Goddard, whose box office credits count $1.5 billion at the global box office, received an Academy Award nomination for his screenplay of The Martian, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon. The pic notched six additional Oscar nominations including Best Picture, and also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture-Comedy. Goddard wrote such movies as Cloverfield and World War Z, and wrote and directed The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale.
Goddard began his career writing on the 90’s hit series Buffy The Vampire Slayer. His TV credits include Angel, Alias, Lost, Daredevil, and The Good Place.
Upcoming, Goddard wrote and will serve as an EP on Amazon MGM Studios Project Hail Mary, which Phil Lord and Chris Miller will direct and Ryan Gosling will headline.
Under his Goddard Textiles banner, he is currently in production on the ABC television series High Potential starring Kaitlin Olson.
Through four movies —The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, The Matrix Resurrections— have grossed $1.8 billion around the world. The franchise has won four Oscars.

Ehhh … trying to reserve judgement. Putting my money on “doesn’t happen” for now. I like Godard’s work, but nothing there rises to the level of “special” that I expect from Matrix movies (and, admittedly, have only fully gotten once).
The only “new twist” I can see for a Matrix movie is having the hero go on his king-fu shooting spree only to find out that this is just the world. No computer underworld. He’s just a deranged mass murderer.

I really liked the ideas in Resurrections. Like with the Animatrix episodes, they have their pick at stories.
I hope it doesn't have anything to do with the main Matrix characters. Whatever it is, it'll have my interest.

I loved The Martian, never watched Cloverfield, enjoyed World War Z, and hated both The Cabin in the Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale. But it's The Matrix, so I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Just because he got hired to write and direct a Matrix movie, it doesn't mean it will happen. There are so many movies that hire writers and directors that fizzle out before cameras even start rolling.
Bump this thread in 3 to 5 years if it happens.
I think it's way too early for anyone to get even remotely excited about this.

On the positive side, Goddard is one of the last quality writers/producers left in Hollywood. On the negative side, I doubt this ever gets made. WB loves toying with movies in development for literally decades.

Cautiously optimistic but, if I'm being honest, only the first movie was great and aside from the motorcycle chase on the freeway in the 2nd movie, the rest is pretty below average.

They should probably just do a remake of The Matrix rather than a fifth installment. The well seems pretty dry at this point.
And, besides, it's kind of been built into the franchise that it will be rebooted at some point in the future.
Maybe they bring back Keanu and CAM as agents.

I think what they need to do is somehow get Western audiences up to speed on many of the concepts in the sequels that they pulled from Vedic traditions. I think those were jumps that most just didn't appreciate. Not that this was the only problem with the sequels (at least 2 & 3, I liked 4 a lot), but it could help people get onboard with the rest of the film. I'd argue that the Matrix "saga" is more or less an update of Hindu stories and thought, but since the first movie is so easily interpreted through the more popular Judeo-Christian lens in the West, much of the philosophical aspects in the sequels lose people.

My first impulse would be something trippy, like they leave the Matrix and go into the real world. Then find out that the real world is just another level of the simulation. And the whole thing just becomes simulations within simulations, and nobody knows what's real or what isn't. The final revelation would they're all just AI simulations on an abandoned spaceship floating through empty intergalacticspace for billions of years, the last remnants of the human race, long since extinct, the Earth consumed by our red giant Sun long ago.
