Well the thing that gets me is people whose favorite best picture lists are entirely composed of 1995+ (or 1990+) movies. I mean, yes, I too have not seen most best picture winners, but I certainly wouldn't then post in a thread like this and spout off Braveheart, the English Patient, Titanic, Shakespeare in Love, and American Beauty.
Platoon would be my pick, offhand. (I'm always afraid in this kind of thread I'll name a movie that didn't win, e.g. Pulp Fiction.)

Cannot speak for the others, but the only person in this thread thus far that mentioned The English Patient was me. It accompanied films on my short list from 1984, 1972 and 1954.
Tell me, why should my mention of The English Patient, which is IMHO one of the very best films of the last 20 years, earn your disdain? Try not to use the word "sucked" or "SUX" in your response.

I think a truly worthy Oscar winner should stand the test of time so all of my favouries are from over 20 years ago.

Kramer Vs. Kramer. I mean Apocalypse Now was ok I guess, but it could never match the artistry of a masterpiece like Kramer Vs. Kramer! Those academy members sure know a classic that will stand the test of time when they see one.

Mine is "Saving Private Ryan". I'm not accepting "Shakesphere in love" the winner that year. The only reason why that won was because it came out in December.

Interesting topic, considering so many movies I'd consider real favorites didn't even win. Among the winners, Casablanca is probably tops, though I'd also mention The Sting, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, The Godfather, and Braveheart.
Too bad movies like these didn't win: Chinatown, A Clockwork Orange, Elizabeth, The Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction, or Apocalypse Now

Worth noting that the Academy voters are not made up of top pro's trying to find the most deserving films. The people who vote for the Best Film Oscar are (in the main) geriatric ex-film workers. Add to this that they vote politically and they vote with sentiment.
A lot of their picks start making sense when you consider this.

I'm going to tell you my least favorite best picture winner: Titanic. That movie did not deserve a single oscar, let alone best picture. The award that year should have gone to LA Confidential or Good Will Hunting

My favorite Best Picture is The Sting. Of course, the DVD of The Sting is very poor (Pan & Scan, barebones, etc.). Hopefully this problem will be corrected.
If I look at my "Favorite Best Picture with an outstanding DVD", I would have to go with Gladiator or Braveheart.
