Yeah... but the the enormous fan base is mostly composed of losers. I mean, most people will shell $5 or even $8 to go see the...the movie, and some might even buy the $12.99 VHS, but when you've got a stack of unopened toys that are two decades old...you've got a problem.
The Star Trekkies fit this description better than the Star Wars fans. I have never seen a Star Wars fan that you describe, but they must exist. The Trekkies are out there in droves and they do exactly what you describe and more. The Star Wars fans though do purchase the various releases of the Star Wars saga over and over again whenever there is a newer updated version. (No, I am not one of them.) I think the Star Wars base is composed of a wider variety of people than you give credit. We shall see when Star Wars Episode II is released just how much of a base following exists still exists.

My o my, aren't we being snotty posting, in effect, "I am a fine member of the intelligentsia. The common people are nothing but idiots. If a talented artist appeals to the common people then that is a sell-out. Blasphemy!"

That is unfortunate. The Trekkies are far more notorious for that type of compulsive behavior, however, as already mentioned.

I'll agree on Star Wars. Great series, but WAY overrated.

For someone who seems to passionately despise the things you've described, you seem to know an awful lot of detail about the lives of "Star Wars" fans and people who don't lick Woody Allen's @$$. Are there issues here? I don't actually belong to either camp, as I like the old SW trilogy, but do not think they are brilliant films (dialogue is a notch better than porn, but almost as ridiculous) and did not like Phantom Menace at all; I also find some of Woody Allen's work funny but overall am not all that impressed by his body of work.
In order to stay on topic, my picks for some overrated films (I can't comment on most overrated EVER, since I haven't seen every movie):
-Blair Witch Project (I lived in Orlando at the time, and the hype there was even bigger because a couple of the filmmakers were students there)
-Chicken Run (I really wanted to like this, I kept hearing how clever it was, but it just wasn't all that funny to me, even though I got the references)
-Gladiator (Good, but is this seriously the Best Picture of 2000????)

Since it stands to be the worst Best Picture of the last 20 years, I'd go with Gladiator.

The principal reason that Annie Hall beat out Star Wars is that it is a significantly better film. This is one of the few years the Academy got it right.

This is so obviously Titanic.

This is the highest grossing film of all time, and tied for most oscars in a single year, yet it isn't even close to one of the best movies ever made.

Her new CD, and Puffy on trial boosted her visability and bankability in the last few months, which is why "The Cell" had pretty good DVD sales. No one had heard of her when Out Of Sight came out, and her star power would have taken The Cell a lot farther if it was the sort of film that anyone would want to see.

"Gladiator" is better than "Titanic," at least arguably better than "American Beauty," MUCH better than the highly overrated, and incredibly stupid "Shakespeare in Love," and also better than "The English Patient." So if it wins, it will be the best "Best Picture" in 5 years.
I also think it's better than "Dances With Wolves" and "Driving Miss Daisy," and I'd put it at a similar level with "Rain Man" and "Forrest Gump," and I find "Gladiator" to be much more rewatchable than either of these films.

Hey, don't knock Annie Hall. IMO, it's one of the 15 best movies ever. And Star Wars, while completely watchable and good, is at it's core a B-Movie.
