Re: Pink Floyd -- "The Endless River" -- New Album -- October 2014
I'm torn about this. On the one hand, it's new Pink Floyd. Yes, it's from the inferior, later Waters-less Floyd, but it's new nonetheless, and I don't dislike Momentary Lapse of Reason (my first Pink Floyd album) and Division Bell as much as others. On the other hand, I have never liked purely instrumental songs. Didn't like it when Bowie did it with Brian Eno, and I'm not super pumped about Pink Floyd doing it here.
There were new vocals recorded from what I understand, so that's of some comfort. I'm actually looking forward to this quite a lot all things considered.

It's not new Pink Floyd though. It's castoffs from The Division Bell sessions with some overdubs added.

Re: Pink Floyd -- "The Endless River" -- New Album -- October 2014
Ok, so I'm about 3 weeks late chiming in, but I rarely come into the music forum. So bare with me as I put on my Pink Floyd nerd hat and clear up some misconceptions. Some of these statements may look like opinions, but be rest assured, they are facts:
- A Momentary Lapse of Reason is worse than a David Gilmour solo album. It's a David Gilmour solo album engineered to look/sound sort of like a Pink Floyd album. It has a couple of decent cuts, but overall it's pretty weak. Oh and when I say it's worse than a Gilmour solo album, I mean in the sense of integrity and authenticity. I don't want to give the impression that I would actually rather listen to a Gilmour solo album. That would be silly.
- If one respects the legitimacy of Pink Floyd mk. 3, then I think The Division Bell is a genuine Pink Floyd album. Gilmour may have been running the show, but Mason and Wright had too much involvement to call it a Gilmour solo album. Overall, the album is much stronger than Momentary Lapse, but it's got a bit too much filler and has way too many guitar solos that sound exactly the same. The "edited for time" lp version may actually be an improvement in that regard.
- I get that Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is in fact awesome. I've probably listened to it more times than I have the two post-Waters Floyd albums combined. It really only works as a singular piece though. There's only a couple of tracks (Sexual Revolution, Every Strangers Eyes) that I would listen to on their own. If you like the album and can tolerate audience recordings, the '84 live version with Clapton is even better.
- Radio KAOS has some decent material, particularly on side 2 (I also like some of the b-sides that didn't make the cut), but it's circa 1986 production is pretty awful. I've often wondered how that album would have come off if the same material had been recorded in a different era. As it is, it's easily the worst of Waters' 3 solo albums.
- Amused to Death is a better album than both of the post-Waters Floyd albums, but like Division Bell, it could stand to lose a little fat. Cut out Late Home Tonight pts. 1&2 and Too Much Rope and you have something really special. As it is, Amused to Death is filled with all sorts of those magical, spine-tingly moments that I associate so closely with Pink Floyd.
- As far as the "new" album is concerned, I'm a big enough fan that I will lap up whatever they see fit to release. If this material had been released on the Division Bell box set (which my guess is it was originally intended) I would have bought it. Instead I'll pick it up as a stand-alone release. It probably works out best that way since I now don't have to drop $100 on that box. I'm not expecting much, but everything any of those guys put out has at least one or two nice moments.

I'm actually thrilled for this release. It does have vocals from Durga, the othe other singers, and Gilmour.
But the thing is, this is PINK FLOYD doing instrumentals. They're known for their full lengthy instrumental tracks or sections of songs (Cluster One, Shine On, Echoes, etc.).
The lacquers cut for the new album arrived at Acoustic Sounds yesterday. Will be a double vinyl, too.
Apparently, Gilmour will have another album of his own out next year, too (rumored to be in May).

New vocalist - of sorts.

Professor Stephen Hawking credited as guest vocalist on new Pink Floyd album
Posted 9 Oct 2014, 9:00am
Pink Floyd's first studio album in two decades will be without estranged ex-member Roger Waters but one vocalist from their last record is staying on - physicist Stephen Hawking.
Their album, The Endless River, is one of the year's most eagerly anticipated new releases and is due out on November 7.
But credits leaked on the internet list a song with the acclaimed scientist called Talkin' Hawkin'.
Hawking also appeared on the rock legends' last album, The Division Bell, in 1994.
On the song Keep Talking, Hawking's computerised voice begins by saying: "For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination."
The song credits for The Endless River, earlier reported by the music site Consequence of Sound, also showed that keyboardist Richard Wright wrote or co-wrote 12 of the 18 songs even though he died in 2008.
The album does not include Waters - the driving force behind the classic album The Wall in 1979, the year Wright originally left the band.
Waters quit Pink Floyd in 1985 and has been dismissive of his former bandmates' subsequent work.
In a recent posting on Facebook, Waters described Pink Floyd as consisting of remaining band members David Gilmour and Nick Mason.
"I have nothing to do with Endless River. Phew! This is not rocket science people, get a grip," Waters wrote.

Re: Pink Floyd -- "The Endless River" -- New Album -- October 2014
Did everybody just miss the memo that this album is leftover material from The Division Bell with a few finishing touches put on it?
Why is it news that people who worked on The Divison Bell, but are now dead, are credited on this? They weren't dead during The Division Bell sessions that this material is from.
And while I wasn't expecting more Stephen Hawkins material on these songs, it's also not a surprise unless it's newly recorded audio or something. But it's probably just outtakes of the same material they pulled from last time.
And why should Roger Waters be involved? He wasn't working with them during those sessions, so he's not on it now. Big freakin' surprise, right?
Could somebody please send a memo to these news sources that this is not a new album or new material, but simply a new album made of old unreleased material?
The very least they could do is read the Wikipedia entry on the album before they start acting like this is some reunion album.

People are apparently unaware that Roger hasn't been with Pink Floyd for decades, and are contacting him and his wife asking about it. I gather that these are supposed fans of the band, so you would think they would be in the know.

I can't believe how many comments I've seen after articles that say "Why wasn't Roger involved?" Like there was any chance he was going to be involved in Division Bell leftover material.

Love the album and find it really beautiful. Although no person over the age of 12 should ever use the word "dissed" for any reason. Steven Spielberg heard "Louder Than Words" and rolled his eyes, it is that cheesy.

Can't believe how much I like this as well and if this material is left over from the horrible division bell album, call me impressed - it doesn't sound like it at all (or even the shitty 80's Floyd) the album officialy starts at track 5 for me (the first 4 tracks are just one long intro) I can seriously just start it at track 5 and let it play all the way through (have done so about 4 times already).
The last track is awesome as well as track 17.....I would have def liked more lyrics but oh well.
Very well crafted album. Not gonna be for everyone but I'm glad I like it.

I love this album. Perfect selection when I'm at work, and have to really get into developing complicated code. I just keep spinning it around on auto-play.
