Not to be a dick, but is that true? At least in terms of Meg Myers. Lisa Loeb was definitely unsigned when Stay went to #1, because it was on the Reality Bites soundtrack before she got a record deal. According to what I looked up about Meg Myers, she signed to Atlantic Records in 2013, and Running Up That Hill was released in 2019. Also didn't see that it reached #1.

Ah, I get it, but it's definitely disingenuous since she'd already been signed to a major label at one point in her career. And I'm sure there was label interest, she was just shopping for the right deal.
