Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

ROCK & ROLL HALL OF FAME FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NOMINEES FOR 2024 INDUCTION

THE 2024 CEREMONY RETURNS TO DISNEY+ AND ABC

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced today the following Nominees for 2024 Induction:
  • Mary J. Blige
  • Mariah Carey
  • Cher
  • Dave Matthews Band
  • Eric B. & Rakim
  • Foreigner
  • Peter Frampton
  • Jane's Addiction
  • Kool & the Gang
  • Lenny Kravitz
  • Oasis
  • Sinéad O'Connor
  • Ozzy Osbourne
  • Sade
  • A Tribe Called Quest
The 2024 ceremony will once again stream live on Disney+ with a special airing on ABC at a later date and available on Hulu the next day. The 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony streamed live on Disney+ for the first time ever; the special on ABC reached over 13 million viewers across linear and streaming, and ABC’s New Year’s Day telecast was the No. 1 entertainment choice among Adults18-49.

To be eligible for nomination, an individual artist or band must have released its first commercial recording at least 25 years prior to the year of nomination. Ten out of 15 of the Nominees are on the ballot for the first time, including Mariah Carey, Cher, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & the Gang, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Sinéad O’Connor, Ozzy Osbourne and Sade.

“This remarkable list of Nominees reflects the diverse artists and music that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honors and celebrates,” said John Sykes, Chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. “Continuing in the true spirit of Rock & Roll, these artists have created their own sounds that have impacted generations and influenced countless others that have followed in their footsteps.”

The Nominees were announced today in partnership with ABC/Disney+ at the TCA in Los Angeles and on the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame social channels.

Nominee ballots will be sent to an international voting body of more than 1,000 artists, historians, and members of the music industry. An artist’s musical impact and influence on other artists, length and depth of career and body of work as well as innovation and superiority in style and technique are taken into consideration.

Inductees will be announced in late April. The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2024 Induction Ceremony will take place in Cleveland this fall with date and on-sale information to be announced.

Select Rock & Roll Hall of Fame donors and members receive exclusive Induction ticket opportunities. Donate or join by June 30 to be eligible. Visit rockhall.com/membership to learn more.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Lenny Kravitz doesn't belong in that list with those other artists. I am not even a fan of most of them but recognize there place in music history. Kravitz had that one song that sounded like a bad Hendrix rip off.

Ozzy should have been in the first year he was eligible. One of the most influential artists of all time.

Still no Iron Maiden...fuck the Hall. Other than Ozzy, Maiden and Slayer should have been before everyone on that list.

Eh. I think you could have a decent argument about Sinead and Sade. I mean...Hall Of Fame for both of them? Even "Music" HOF? C'mon.

A couple of pop hits does not make a Hall Of Famer in my opinion. But whatever.

If you already don't have Iron Maiden, Alice In Chains, Anthrax, BTO, Boston, Devo, Dio, Peter Frampton, Billy Idol, INXS, Kansas, Megadeth, Motley Crue, Motorhead, Ted Nugent, Fucking Ozzy, Iggy Pop, Scorpions, Slayer, Smashing Pumpkins, Styx, Soundgarden, 38 Special, Tool, and so many more...in your "Rock And Roll" Hall Of Fame...but you want to vote to induct Sinead O'Connor and Sade before just these few? It just becomes a running joke at this point. Which we already know it is.

Ridiculous. Just call it the Music Hall Of Fame and dump the Rock And Roll bullshit.

Here's a solid list with way more artists still not in that makes most of their nominees farcical.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Even if the name was changed to Music Hall Of Fame a lot of the artist that are in shouldn't be. Kenny G and Michael Bolton sold more albums than quite a lot of the the artist currently in the hall. They should be in before half of them.

Anyway, it really isn't important other than to have something to make fun of an complain about online. I am never going to visit the place and my favorite artist being in or not doesn't make me enjoy their music more or less.

Bring on the boy bands and Britney Spears.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Even taking an expansive definition of "rock and roll" (as opposed to "rock"; that is, saying that "rock" is a sub-genre of "rock and roll"), I don't think some of these people shouldn't be nominated. I agree that Kravitz is questionable, and so is Foreigner. Just as a matter of personal taste, I don't want Carey in. I think I got this link from someone else on this forum, but I agree with it about 90%: https://www.vulture.com/article/rock...-to-worst.html

Just remember, these are the nominees, not the final inductees. we'll see what happens in a few months.

They definitely have a prejudice against metal, but sure, other genres even less connected to rock are a-ok. "Fuck the hall" indeed.

Yes! I agree with a lot of what the article said, but as a glam rock (and esp. Roxy Music) fan, these quotes were spot on for me:

The hall gets attacked on a lot of fronts — there’s not enough women, etc., etc. One of the more glaring, and curious, is its wariness of the effete and glam side of rock. Being nominated in your first year of eligibility is a big deal with the hall, . . . Bowie had to wait four years, and wasn’t even nominated (!) in two of those years. Other glammy artists like Roxy Music, T. Rex, and Todd Rundgren waited much longer, and acts like the New York Dolls and Mott the Hoople are still on the outside . . .

and (bolding mine)

41. Roxy Music — Brian Eno, Bryan Ferry, John Gustafson, Eddie Jobson, Andy Mackay, Phil Manzanera, Graham Simpson, Paul Thompson (2019)

Given that they’d been eligible for 20 years plus, this was the most glaring omission in the hall’s history. Roxy was one of the most challenging bands of its time, mixing glam, art rock, and some species of highly emotional European chanteuserie (courtesy of leader Bryan Ferry) that, back in the day, could reduce impressionable teens to tears, though I’m not mentioning any names [[i]coughmycollegeroommatedavecough]. Through this the band layered postmodern rock imagery; a decayed, regretful sexuality; and venturesome soundscapes (courtesy of founding member Brian Eno). Brassy early releases gave way to several art-rock classics (Country Life, Stranded) and then shifted around the time of Manifesto into haute global pop, in Flesh and Blood and Avalon, that arguably has never been equaled. You can hear Roxy’s influence throughout punk, New Wave, post-punk, the New Romantic Era, and beyond.
Roxy is on a pedestal with Bowie in the U.K.; the hall clearly doesn’t have ears for this sort of stuff. It’s also evidence of how unquestionably Amer-centric the nominating committee is. Publicist Bob Merlis, who was on the nominating committee for many years, argued for Johnny Hallyday, a rock star whose popularity in France has really no equivalent in the Western world.
(Edited because I quoted the wrong post at first)

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

The irony about people not liking Lenny Kravitz's name being proposed is that he is one of the few remaining musicians of the last 35 years that writes almost every song, plays almost every instrument, sings all the vocals, produces, mixes and arranges, etc. all his shit in the Rock And Roll genre. Other than his last album in 2018, he is basically a one-man band which I always find impressive. And his music sound good and is catchy...at least to my ears.

I don't really know much influence he has had on others, but he is way more "rock and roll" than a ton of people already in the Hall Of Fame.

Just look at the credits on all his albums.

He's more than a Rock Star, he's kind of a Rock Icon. I'm 100% in his camp and hope he gets in.

Re: Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2024

Not on the Nominees list...

Jethro Tull (an arena headliner for a decade, and a band with a phenomenal - and influential - discography)
Iron Maiden
Ronnie James Dio

To me, those three should have been automatic.

On the fringe, but should be in given some of the other acts that have been inducted...
Slayer
Thin Lizzy

Good grief! Who picks these nominees? They have to be 30 and under.

I will throw up if Mariah Carey gets in over Ozzy as a solo artist.

It is 2024 and WTF Ozzy is not in?

Sinéad O'Connor it was sad she died but does she really belong?

She might have had a longer and more interesting career if she hadn't had that massive pop hit. She was never cut out to be a pop star and "Nothing Compares 2 U" really raised the mainstream expectations for her that she was never going to be able to live up to.

To people who just listened to Top 40 stuff, it sort of positioned her to be some kind of Whitney Houstonish pop diva when, in reality, she was just a weird art school chick who shaves her head. That came out in 1990, right before grunge and alt-rock hit big, so she could have easily ridden that wave after "The Lion and the Cobra."

Cn we all agree that Kool and the Gang should be shoe-ins for induction? Seriously, they had a ton of radio hits, you still here Celebration everywhere, and they're great live.

If/when Iron Maiden gets inducted I hope they send Eddie out on stage instead of doing a speech and have him moon the audience and then walk off.

Hell yes. I'm sure the only reason they've been overlooked over the years is because of the many, many personnel changes.
