Eric Carmen dead at 74

From Variety:

Eric Carmen, who became an icon of power pop as the frontman of the Raspberries before achieving even bigger hits as a solo artist in the 1970s and ’80s, has died at age 74.

The news came in a message from his wife, Amy Carmen, on the singer’s website.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of the passing of Eric Carmen,” she wrote. “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend. It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy. Please respect the family’s privacy as we mourn our enormous loss. ‘Love Is All That Matters… Faithful and Forever.'”

A shame. Really loved his music, both Raspberries and solo. One of the bands I'm in covers his song "That's Rock and Roll".

That said, while I don't mean to make this political, he'd gone full MAGA his last few years. He was tweeting all throughout November and December 2020 that they were "just about to recall Wisconsin and declare Trump the rightful winner, then the rest of the states will fall like dominoes". While you can support who you want politically, statements like that are pure delusion, making me wonder if his mind was really right.

Well, I'd like to have a 100% favorable opinion of him, but how he votes and who he supports has no bearing on the music he made. I don't have to think about his MAGA talk when I enjoy his music.

I was watching that video of Go All The Way yesterday and saw a comment say RIP Eric. Thought it was odd but didn't check Google.

I was a fan of power pop and they were great.

I don't know why but I always thought he was a Brit for some reason.

"Go All The Way" is a power pop classic but I gotta tell yas, being 16 and getting to second base with a cute redhead you got a crush on in your first car whilst "Hungry Eyes" is on the radio? 80s magic or something.

He was obviously suffering from OWGS. It usually shows its first signs in middle age, and only gets worse over time. It can strike any aging white guy... doesn't matter if they are past-their prime punks, aging metalheads, award-winning novelists, your favorite boomer actors, ditch diggers, CEOs, your grandfather, or your dad. It is pernicious and irreversible. There is no cure and no treatment.

That's a bit of a bummer about him. I really like some of his music. I kind of felt the same way about Meatloaf when I learned about his political leanings as well. I just try to blank it out while I listen to the songs they did that I like.

I've always said that if you quit listening to musicians or watching actors that you don't like what they say or do, you won't have much to entertain you in this life.

Yeah, that's one bad thing about the internet... back in the day you could read books, listen to music, and watch movies it ignorant bliss.

But about twenty or twenty-five years ago, we suddenly had the ability to interact with our favorite creators and found a lot of them were raging assholes. And I don't even mean politics; there are quite a few authors and comic book creators I found to be insufferable assholes in general just from things like message boards and blogs. And then social media came along and...

Art != Artist

As much as you can call Make Me Lose Control art.

You scratch hard enough, you're going to find something irredeemably awful about anyone. Except Curtis "Booger" Armstrong.

I guess I am wired in a special way because I can't think of any circumstance where knowing "the truth" about a singer would cause me to like a song less.
