DVDSoon.com : Any horror stories?

Noticed they consistently have the lowestest prices online (extremely low!), but their user rating is not so great on DVDPricesearch. Does anyone know why? Or have any good or bad stories?

There are lots of threads about DVDSoon. Do a to find more.

My horror story concerns an order I currently have in transit: 51 days and counting...

O.K., is the word "DVDSoon" in any of those threads or just embedded in the message? Because I manually looked at the subject of all threads here (luckily only three pages), and didn't see one. Sorry for any inconvenience or duplicate questions.

I've had nothing but good experiences with them. Every time I've ordered, the DVDs have arrived very quickly, sometimes more than a week before street date for pre-orders (I got ST:TNG Season 7 on Dec. 21st). I'll definately be ordering from them again.

I don't mind if they charge your card when you place your order but that was 11/07/2002 and my Boxset is still backordered. Giving them 1 more week then cancelling before I lose my chargeback rights.

I second this.

My only "problem" was that my Back To The Future set was shipped on 12/5/02 and only arrived yesterday. At $25, I can afford to wait.

I've had other shipments ship early and were received 7 - 10 before street date.

I too was afraid to order from them based on their ratings at dvdpricesearch but a friend said he ordered from them without any problems. When I saw a title I wanted that was $5.00 cheaper their than anyplace else, I deceided to take a chance. It arrived within a week. I tried another title and it too came within a week. Then I got bold and ordered 4 titles. After a week when it hadn't come I began to worry. I didn't have to. For some reason it took a little longer to get to me but it did. With some of the best prices, up to $5.00 less than anyplace else and free shipping - they are hard to beat. The only thing I won't do is pre-order more than a month in advance.

2/4/03

- I pre-ordered 3 dvd's that should have been available on 1/28/03. I received my chargecard statement and was billed for these. The problem is now all 3 titles show "BACKORDERED"
I received no notification from them that there was a problem or that there would be a delay. In fact I emailed them over a week ago and have not received any replys.

Needless to say I cancelled the order today and will ask my credit company to give me a conditional credit for the amount they charged.

I've decided the lower cost isn't worth the hassle. I'll stick with Deepdiscountdvd and DVDempire.

*Update*

I got a "Shipping" email on my Box set I ordered 11/05 on the 27th. Appears they are fine as long as your items in stock but you will wait for backordered items.

Their prices are usually the best but you can get frustrated by them quickly on combined orders rather than individual titles.

I have three part orders waiting. They showed up finally on-hand a couple of days ago and then showed as on-order no arrival date again today. The first order was placed end of October. All were pre-orders and still waiting. Other sites have the titles in stock so it's not a studio delay, just keeping the advance payment in their Bank acccount to pay creditors I think. Big hits usually are not a problem but smaller sellers I think they have minimum inventory, even for pre-orders.

This is an update from my previous posting. No response to an email and no signs of any DVD's. I wanted to check if I was the only person not getting my movies and checked their own top 15 titles (left of screen), guess what. 9 out of 15 top sellers are on-order, most have been recent pre-orders.
They must be using cash avances to fund purchases of a few titles and keeping other orders back-ordered for as long as they can. How long does it take to get an order from a distributer? I bet a couple of days tops. Pay an extra dollar but get your disc's on time from other more professional stores.

Well, I finally ordered from DVD Soon myself because the prices were too good to pass up.. I ordered a video game from them 2 weeks ago and just yesterday did I receive notice that it had shipped. I don't know why it took them so long to get it back in stock, but at least it's finally on it's way..

later

I have been ordering from DVDSoon for about six months now and until recently have been pretty satisfied. Their shipping is rather slow, but their prices are usually tough to beat.

My only complaint is on my last (still incomplete) order which I placed on 11/14. I pre-ordered the last three Walt Disney Treasures sets (Street Date of 12/3) and received the Goofy set and the Behind the Scenes set about a week after the release date, but no Mickey Mouse in Black & White.

I have been checking the status of the account on a daily basis since early December and it said "On Order" for weeks, until about two weeks ago when it said "On hand". I thought it would be shipped promptly after seeing that good news. When I checked it the next day it showed the disc as being "On Moratorium". So I was diappointed and figured I would simply cancel that disc since I have received the other DVDs.

First of all, the cancel function does not seem to work if part of the order has already shipped, clicking cancel brings you to a blank screen only. I then tried calling Customer Service many times and have left two messages with all of the pertinent information. No response. I have to admit this is the first problem I have ever had contacting their customer service. Finally I sent an e-mail over a week and a half ago and have received no reply. My problem is that DVDSoon always charges your credit card as soon as your order is placed, I don't like the idea of DVDSoon hanging on to my money with no hopes of ever receiving this disc.

I have since ordered Mickey Mouse in Black and White from Amazon.ca and it shipped a few days ago, I'm sure I'll get it from them. Because of this latest experience I will probably pass on DVDSoon from now on. Unfortunate!

There has been a lot of talk about them in Canadian papers and on Canadian news stations.

From what I put together, that is EXACTLY what they are doing. I have stayed away from this site. When the system they have going finally finishes them off, I don't want them to have any of my money, as I will never get it back.

From what I have heard, they sell super low to get the business, and are actually selling at a loss. They have set up a perpetual debt machine that they call "business" and when it finally catches up to them, they will fold into bankruptcy. I don't know all the details about it, but it's not hard to find a news story about it. I work in Canada about 3months every year, and I hear about them every time I am up there.

I had had decent experiences with them on a couple of previous orders: though orders seemed to take a long time to even ship (I'm not talking about transit time), the good prices seemed worth it. However, my most recent experience will make me think twice about ordering from them again.

I ordered the 3 most recent Walt Disney Treasures from them last month. They were listed as being "In Stock" at the time. When a month went by without getting a shipping notice from them, I checked my order status and saw that all the titles have been put "On Moritorium" (which is different than being "Back-ordered" and basically means they may never get them again.) I have to wonder: Were they ever going to notify me of this? Or were they just going to hang onto my $$$ until I found out?

Then, get this: When you cancel an order, they simply credit your account with them. You have to make a special request to have them to refund your credit card.

In short, as Wolf Husky posted above, they are running a perpetual debt machine: taking your money up front, then taking their own sweet time to fill your order -- if at all. Then, if they don't, they'll hang onto your money unless you specifically request them to refund it back to you.

Seems like a risky business model to me. Proceed with caution!

I just received my first DVD from DVDsoon. It was Enemy at the Gates, which cost $9.76 US, free shipping. It was ordered on 1/9/03 and received on 1/27/03. Based on this one instance I'm pleased, so far.

However, I also ordered The Blue vs The Gray on 12/30/02 and nothing has shipped yet. There was a comment on the web page that this title has a 2 - 3 week lead time, so I guess my wait is still within the reasonable range.

Based on some of the "debt machine" comments above I'll wait to receive my order of 12/30/02 before ordering additional titles.

What about their "free" shipping notice: On the website it says that if you use the free shipping and it gets lost, too bad so sad they don't have to replace it (you agree by ordering). Can this hold water in court? I just found out in another board that even if a business states something on a webpage such as that, you can still win in court if what they lay out is ludicrous.

I've ordered from them 2 or 3 times. No horror stories at all (received everything fairly promptly at a great price). But their policy of charging your card immediately does open up high probabilities of horror stories... I only order from them as a last resort or if there is an incredible deal.

I definitely wouldn't preorder from there, or order *anything* that was listed as backordered. Only in stock items.

I have had a large credit (over $250US) with them for a long time and did not want to close it out and have them credit my account because I knew I would lose money when it was transferred back into my credit card account. Finally, though I decided it was time to get rid of the credit since the exchange rate had improved...improved that is for those holding Canadian funds as it had gone from about 63c to about 66c. So last Friday I went ahead and asked for the money to be returned to my credit card account and was quite pleased to check my account on line this morning to see that it had already been processed and that I had actually made a couple of bucks in the transfer. I guess I can now consider myself an investor in foreign currency!!!

As I posted above, the Walt Disney Treasures were listed as being "In Stock" when I ordered them last month. Their status changed to "On Moritorium" sometime after that, without my receiving any communication from DVD Soon. (I've also pre-ordered a couple things from them in the past, which didn't ship until several weeks after the release date. I guess it gives them more time to hang onto my money.)

And here's something else to keep in mind if you order from DVDSoon:

They hold your order until all items are ready to ship, unless you agree to an additional charge of $1.60 CDN per item to get them as they become available. But since there is no minimum purchase required to get Free Shipping, it's better to place (for example) 3 orders of 1 item each, rather than 1 order with 3 items.

However, if you order 4 or more titles, they issue a $1.00 CDN credit for each DVD to your account for use on your next order. But then, of course, if one of the items goes to backorder (or moratorium) or is a pre-order, it might be quite awhile before you get the other items.

I've ordered from them for over a year now, and I have two complaints:

- They NEVER answer their phone, or return message, emails, or even listen to their recordings from what I gather. Fortunately, I have had to contact them for only minor reasons.

- They don't hold your items when they get them. That is a BIG irritant, especially since you have already paid for it!!!! It it actually possible to have an order NEVER ship because they don't a have all of your items on an order at one time. I might could deal with that if they didn't charge your credit card until they shipped, but when you have already paid for it, that is another story. That is why I ONLY order big titles from them (Spiderman, Star Wars, Signs, Beauty & the Beast, etc...) and not some of the lesser titles for my son for instance (Clifford, Barney, Bear In the Big Blue House, Scoby Doo, etc...). Even then, sometimes I have to bear it out, but not long in most cases (usually about 5-8 days, except in one case that was awaiting a shipment of South Park Season 1....).

If they have it in stock, I would advise to take a chance with their prices, but if you are uncomfortable with their shipping tactics, then I suggest you go elsewhere...

Bill

I don't order from them much but they have come through every time I used them. My latest order for Driving Miss Daisy (SE) shipped yesterday and will hopefully arrive in about a week. Also I had to return a defective DVD for exchange once and they handled that without problems. The one big drawback like many have mentioned is charging your credit card immediately after placing an order. I would order from them more if they ever changed their billing policy, If you are going to pre-order from DVDSoon I would recommend waiting a week or two before it is released.

so far received all of my orders from dvd soon (15 dvds from 2 orders). but reading some of the feedbacks is making me think twice about ordering again. I also don't like their practice of charging your card before the dvds got shipped.
