DDD lets 3rd party firms have access to your credit card.

Why does anybody think that this is a new practice, or that it is simply a cyber-ploy? I remember in the '80s and '90s when competition among long distance carriers first became fierce - and I regularly received checks for $20 or $30 dollars from AT&T or Sprint or MCI. Of course, if you deposited the check, that was your "authorization" for them to grab you as a long-distance customer.
I never deposited those checks, and never had a problem. It's called paying attention to what you're doing, and taking some responsibilty. In a perfect world, nobody would devise schemes to get your money, but anybody thinking we live in a perect world has a steep learning curve ahead of them.

If you actually fall for this ploy and cash that $2.50 check you probably deserve to be scammed, but regardless it is a pretty shitty practice. I usually just order a few things from DDD for the 20% off sales since I don't like to wait three weeks to get my stuff, but if I have to forego that savings to keep my info off another marketing/spam list, so be it. I pay a couple of extra bucks at DVDEmpire and get stuff shipped out the same day with no hassles or "promotions" at checkout.

So DDD (who certainly has read this thread), any response?

I got it and I too thought that it was a pretty low thing for them to do. I would be interested in hearing from them about this. Maybe they can add the ability to opt out of such "promotions" to your account.

Got one of these too. The whole thing is very shady. I'll send them an angry email tomorrow. Considering I do all of my DVD buying from DDD, I won't be boycotting them, but it was one of the more insulting con attempts I've received in the mail recently.

I just got one of these $2.50 checks too.
I'm really disappointed that DDD would involve themselves in a cheap scam like this. I'd expect it from some shady online companies. But I really thought DDD was much better than this. I've lost all respect I had for them.
It makes me sick that I've recommended DDD to so many people. That will never happen again.

I got a $5 check a week or two ago and thought it was a promo trying to get me to buy dvd's from them at a time that wasn't during the 20% off sale. I was more than a little disappointed to read the whole thing. I don't mind the pop-up at checkout that you can close because I'm willing to take the whole 2 seconds it takes to close the window or hit "No thanks" as a cost for low prices, but this mailing definitely crossed the line and is pretty messed up. I'm not saying I won't shop with them in the future, but I am very disappointed.
I don't remember there being anything to check or uncheck about sharing info with business partners when I created an account with them. I also just checked my account info, and there's nothing in there about sharing currently either, just the part asking if you want to know about DDD promotions. I also don't recall recieving an e-mail asking me if I'd like to be a part of other business promotions or giving instructions on how to opt out. Had they done that, I think you would have a lot fewer people complaining now.

Face reality people....DDD cannot compete with the big stores and their profit is next to nothing, so to make ends meet they sell their customers info to other businesses, why does that surprise you? Bottom line...AVOID DDD at all costs!

I find it funny that DDD often responds to the various "little" posts placed on this board concerning lost orders and problems in general, yet they haven't responded to this; one of the biggest concerns of some of their biggest customers.
We know they read these posts. Why haven't they responded?

Like others have said, I'm certainly not going to stop shopping there over this, but I'm annoyed by it. And I'm a lot less likely to recommend them to others.

It is indeed a shame that they won’t respond to this thread with a explanation of this action and give a obvious option for people to opt out of this personal information sharing.

I also received one of these "checks" last week in the amount of $5. I read all the terms and conditions and know exactly what it is. I don't considered myself being scammed. There is an expiration date of June 6th and I've been contemplating whether of not to cash this and the 5% DDD discount would likely be in effect for the next 20% OFF sale. Assuming it still occurs during the month of June, it would fall within the 30 days of the trial period. I know I will still have to call in and cancel.
Anyone else try that before? Is it indeed stackable with current DDD sales/promotions -- this would make it 25% OFF.

I too read all the terms and conditions and knew what the check was.
Perhaps I am naive but I did not expect them to so willingly sell my credit card information to another company.

I didn't get anything like this from DDD (I've never clicked on their links, but I do have the "newsletters" box checked).
I get stuff like this all the time from other companies, and for a lot more than $5 many times (lots of $10,000 checks). If I get a check and I don't know what it's for, I don't just cash it, I read what it's for, and then I shred the sucker, so I don't have much sympathy for some dumb lady depositing a check when she doesn't know what it's for.
It's cheesy and sleazy, but it must be legal--they aren't giving 3rd party firms your credit card unless you sign the thing authorizing them to do so.

I think part of the problem is that DDD is held in pretty high regard around here. They respond to posts here and help fix problems and in my opinion have had a pretty high level of customer service here. They answer nearly all posts about their company, except this one, and after all this time their answer will most likely be too late.
