Re: The Roku Thread

Roku just essentially bricked my Ultra player because it's trying to force me to accept some new Dispute Resolution Terms. Something about agreeing not to participate in a class action lawsuit against them.

97% don’t read that.
So they probably figured they could slip it in there.

Re: The Roku Thread

I found the instructions to opt out here, in paragraph L. You have 30 days upon receipt of the notice on your device to mail Roku a letter (it's invalid via e-mail) opting out.

Re: The Roku Thread

File a class action lawsuit for that!

It’s been probably a year since I last used my Roku. Only things it’s best at now are Vudu and Movies Anywhere.

Re: The Roku Thread

If the Stop the FOMO guy's suspicion is correct, this was all about Roku trying to cover their butts after a user data breach.

Here's an article about the breach, that was posted over at AVS Forum.

Re: The Roku Thread

Holy crap if they actually do this, all my rokus go in the trash. Keep in mind this is only a patent request but jeez.

Roku is exploring ways to show consumers ads on its TVs even when they are not using its streaming platform: The company has been looking into injecting ads into the video feeds of third-party devices connected to its TVs, according to a recent patent filing.

This way, when an owner of a Roku TV takes a short break from playing a game on their Xbox, or streaming something on an Apple TV device connected to the TV set, Roku would use that break to show ads. Roku engineers have even explored ways to figure out what the consumer is doing with their TV-connected device in order to display relevant advertising.

Re: The Roku Thread

^^ I get that would be annoying and I wouldn't want it either, but note that could only work for "Roku TVs", not the Roku box devices.

I wouldn't be surprised if someday they start showing ads instead of the screensaver on the devices, though.

This is probably just a sign of what all companies will be doing before long. Some streaming services will pop up ads when you pause a show now. Walmart bought Vizio just so they could sell advertising on Vizio TVs.

Right, the purge in my household would be more on principle. Plus I have a Roku TV. Although I guess I can disconnect it from the internet and use an external streaming box if it comes to that.

This is for Roku TVs not separate Roku devices connected to a TV.
