The Criterion Channel -- streaming service

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
I tried it on both my Apple TV and my Roku and I get the same error both times in the same spot so it seems to be an error with the movie. It is also not listing the run time correctly.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Yeah, that definitely sounds like an issue with the movie.
I just found another problem... I had initially chosen annual billing, of $89.99. I was switched (no idea why) to monthly, of $9.99, so I switched it back to annual. At that point, it showed $9.99/year. Great! Of course, they caught the error, and it switched back to $9.99/mth. Again, I switched it to annual, but this time it's showing $99.99 annually, with the option to switch to $10.99 monthly.
ARGH! I'll contact them, and I'm sure I'll get back on the Charter Subscriber price, but it's pretty annoying that they can't get it straight.

The Lure is simply not very good, IMHO. I really didn't get anything out of it.

Criterion Channel not work on my FireStick, nor my Chromebook, due to DRM issues. Throwing up my hands in frustration and will now go kick a pigeon.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Does this have a 30-day free trial? I'm currently 1073/1176 of Criterion watches (That includes the individual Brakhage/Frampton shorts) and I could quickly fill in a lot of the gaps if they've got what I want. A large majority of the un-watched pile is the Olympic stuff. Over 30 of them. Again, individual titles.

The first month is free. I don't think that's limited to Charter subscribers, but I could be mistaken.
And I stand corrected. mphtrilogy is correct with 14 days, for non-charter subscribers.

So far I've watched La Pointe Courte (this is the one I was having issues with getting an error near the end. It seems to be working when I just tried it and I think I finally got to see the end (a band is playing and then it cuts to black) but the runtime is still 6 minutes less than what I see listed everywhere) and My Name is Julia Ross.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Well, still no word on my billing issue. Apparently the email stating:
Also, I was treated to this special message, tonight:
I thought it was odd that there is a section titled "Short + Feature" which showed a short called Skunk and a feature called Fish Tank. I could play Skunk, but there was no link to play Fish Tank. When I found it in the tcclibrary list, and clicked on it, I got the above message.
This is disappointing, to put it mildly.
I'm really hoping this is not going to end up like Netflix with respect to regional limitations.
Just to be sure this is the issue, would someone mind seeing if Fish Tank is available, from a U.S. account?
As a Charter Subscriber, if you ever need anything special, please don’t hesitate to write to [email protected], and we’ll take care of you.
... is full of shit. I think a response within a day or two would be reasonable. Also, I was treated to this special message, tonight:
SORRY, VIDEO IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE IN YOUR COUNTRY

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Sadly, I do believe there's some regional limitations on some titles (you can squarely blame Roger's, Bell, Shaw, etc. For that, since they led the trend of gobbling up the rights to stuff North of the border a couple decades ago, although I believe Mongrel Media (an "indie") has gained more traction over recent years; they own exclusive rights to IFC stuff and Fish Tank falls under that so I'd garner that Mongrel and/or IFC Canada refused to deal with Criterion Channel for now.
On the tcclibrary site, you can see what's available in Canada by clicking the little US flag (or just "US" if the flag doesn't appear), and it'll switch to a Canadian flag. When I typed in Fish Tank, it shows up on the US list but not the Canada list.
A damn shame to be sure.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
Thank you for checking, Dan! I really appreciate it.
And, I had no idea about the ability to select between U.S. and Canada on tcclibrary. I don't get a flag, however, I could click on 'us' to change it, as you said.
Going by their count it looks like there are about 124 films available in the U.S. that are not available in Canada. Ouch!
Here's a complete list, if anyone is interested (for some reason my list has 125):
There are certainly some in there that I'd like to see.
If it is IFC holding some of them up, that' a real piss-off as I subscribe to IFC, but they are only available in SD through my cable provider.* They also don't have OnDemand.

I watched La promesse, tonight. Good stuff.
I'd love to see more Dardenne bros. films, but they only list one more (The Kid with a Bike), and of course, it's one of the films not available to stream in Canada.
Despite all of my bitching, I'm really glad this is available in Canada. It's certainly not lacking in content.
They have now added an 'All Films' browsing option which has some decent filtering capabilities (Genre, Decade, Country, Director).
The UI while streaming still needs work, as it hasn't changed.

Not yet. I should be billed on May 8th, and fully expect it will be in US dollars.
I did hear back, regarding my incorrect amount being listed, and they indicated it should be corrected within a week, so we'll see.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
I read on another forum, where someone got an email from Criterion after submitting a question, that they ARE planning to have parity between US and Canada, but that some of the deals are taking longer to sort out.
I wonder if this service is like Netflix where what you see available is based on your physical location (IP address) or like Spotify where what you see available is based on your billing location (Credit Card info). Like... Theoretically, if a Canadian logs into CC with a US-billed account... would the selection be limited or not? Hmm.

It looks like the "error 3" issue I complained about before is a widespread issue with the Roku app. There are reddit threads about it. It's happened to all 4 movies I've watched and happens on both of my Roku's but not on my Apple Tv. Hopefully it gets fixed soon.

Re: The Criterion Channel -- streaming service
I watched Wanda the other night. Everything worked fine.
This is the type of title I was interested in and probably would've blind bought in July. But having watched in via their service, I'd pass. It was good, just not something I foresee revisiting. I do a lot of blind buying of Criterions during their sales, so hopefully I can use this to curb that.
I like the Adventures in Moviegoing features.

Here's a lovely index of what's being offered at CC. The box art on the thumbnails is pretty cool.

On a tangent,
Criterion Channel has this on there, but no special features.
It's a phenomenal film. For those that did not import the Eureka edition and have CC memberships, give it a go.
