Meh. I'd subscribe for a month and then cancel after watching Amazing Stories.
Zero interest in ever buying an Apple TV. My Roku works great and was way cheaper.

The new ATV app might be available on the 3rd Gen box.
Announced on Monday, Apple's new Apple TV app experience offers a number of changes to the current version offered in tvOS. As part of Wednesday's new developer betas, a new build for Apple TV Software 7.3 for use with the third-generation Apple TV became available for testing.
The unusual appearance of an update for the older Apple TV hardware strongly suggests Apple is looking to provide its updated experience for owners of the third-generation model, as well as the current-generation Apple TV and Apple TV 4K. However, at present, the user interface experience is very slow, owing to the age of the hardware.
AppleInsider is currently examining the new beta to see what has changed. So far, it has been discovered the beta includes proper Apple ID verification code input, instead of needing to tack it onto the end of the password, as required in some cases. Additionally, the update does not bring AirPlay 2 to the third-generation Apple TV —It remains AirPlay 1 compatibility instead.

Only 5 original shows are scheduled to be available at launch including The Morning Show and The Amazing Stories reboot.
Doesn't sound very attractive to me. I have to think there will be more to this than just 5 original shows. Who the hell is going to pay $10/month for only 5 shows?

I paid $15 a month to watch Game Of Thrones. But I doubt any of these shows will be must watch like GOT.
They'll need to license a movie library like other streaming services. Or maybe they'll throw-in Apple Music the same way Youtube Premium includes Google Play Music.

According to the Bloomberg report, the tech giant is spending about $300 million on the first two seasons of “The Morning Show” alone. Apple ordered two 10-episode seasons of the morning-talker drama series, which stars Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon and Steve Carell. That works out to $15 million per episode — roughly in range of what HBO spent on the final season of “Game of Thrones.
Apple is still mulling how it will release episodes on Apple TV Plus. Rather than dropping full seasons all at once for binge-watching (like Netflix), Apple is looking at releasing the first three episodes with the rest to come out weekly, per the Bloomberg report.

That's insane money for a non-special effects driven show. I'm guessing it's bloated cast salaries.

I agree with Dave that Apple will probably license some movies and shows that Netflix or Hulu don't carry to supplement the 5 original shows at launch. They can't launch a viable streaming service with only original content that will come out at a relatively slow pace.
DC Universe launched last year with only 1 original show (Titans), but they supplemented it with the catalog shows and movies along with the comics.
Apple is obviously losing money on this venture, but they aren't hurting for it either as they have billions in the bank. They're spending an insane amount for all these shows.

Here's an idea. What if, instead of a movie library with unlimited streaming, they offered 2-3 free rentals each month. Subscribers would get the original TV shows and new release movies. No other service offers that.
Apple wouldn't have to invest money in licensing a large catalog. And it would only cost them money when viewers redeemed their rental credits. I'm sure lots of people won't redeem all their monthly credits. And some people would use their rentals on older catalog titles which costs Apple less.

I love Apple products but they are crazy if they think people will pay $10 per month for 5 shows while Disney+ is less money with triple the amount of new shows, not including existing tv shows and movies. Can you say DOA?

Apple has enough money in their coffer to really expand their programming. The entertainment industry is in bed with Apple so it's just a matter of time before you see them running like the BIG Studios. The sad thing with the streaming movement taking over, we will begin to see less and less movie theaters. Going to the theater for some movies is an event experience. I would hate to see this go the way of the dinosaur.

amazon, because I use Prime a lot tough to calculate, but I would put the streaming amount at $9/month
netflix, $14/mo 4 screens
criterion, charter member price $89/year $7.50/month
disney+, $4 /mo 3 year deal price
that's $35/month, plus my cable& internet bill
they would need to blow me away with content, if they found a way to combine this service with apple music I would consider as I spend $15/mo on spotify family....

Still waiting for this to launch- have a few movies that only redeemed in iTunes that I'd like to see without resorting to watching via the laptop (playback often stutters through that.)

I still don't bet this business model at all. Who would pay $10/mo for this service? Maybe if it came with Apple Music included? I still wouldn't but I see the value for those who could move off Spotify. But as presented now I have no idea who would want to get it.
