Re: 2024 - What are your streaming device for movies and television?

I've had a few different ones over the years including NVIDIA Shield, Android TV (built into my Sony TVs), Google Chromecast, etc. But now it's exclusively Apple TV 4K on my living room TV and in my home theater. The interface is clean, ad-free and straightforward and it plays all of my content seamlessly. I wanted to love the Shield, but I hated the need to use a custom launcher to avoid the ugly home screen ads on such an expensive device and I regularly had to adjust settings to get content from various services to play without weird frame-timing issues.

I do still have a Chromecast on a small 720p TV that we use in another room now and then and it's functional for that purpose.

I'm a little surprised there are 0 votes for an Android TV box. Guess no one here trusts those shady boxes from China. I got one for $70 on a trip to Malaysia in 2019 for access to some international channels from Asia. It's literally junk now.
I was reading somebody elses post and typed Apple whoops

I have a couple of those chinese streaming sticks around the house, they run so poorly that there was really no reason to actually use them

Yeah I always thought it was the worst option possible. I haven't tried in years since the streaming boxes hit but the updates have to be few and far between.

My living room tv is a Sony Android tv but I never use the built in apps I have a Roku hooked up to it that we use. For my gameroom tv which is a TCL Roku tv I use the built in apps.

We have 2 TVs and 2 Roku's - these cover virtually all of our streaming (family of 4).

AppleTVs for our main TVs since they just seem to be the fastest and we don’t have any special needs.

Nvidia Shield for the theatre since the Apples don’t play nicely with lossless audio. We also have a Shield in our camper since it’s the easiest to just plug a hard drive of mkvs into. I just wish they would update the hardware as both Shields are getting really slow. I don’t even start a movie without restarting the Shield these days; way too many times it starts buffering a few minutes in if it hasn’t been restarted.

Roku on two TVs and Xbox Series X in my game room.
As much as I'm into the Alexaverse, I didn't like the vibe of the Amazon stick, and Chromecast to me just seems stupid.
Our old Streaming Stick (5+ years old) started overheating so I got the new one around Black Friday.

AppleTV 4k for me.
A fucking crime what they have done to the whole interface/removal of itunes, though.

Agreed! I caught my main Apple TV before it updated but Apple has begun neutering it on the back end.

Re: 2024 - What are your streaming device for movies and television?

I got a PS5 for Christmas and found it to be better than the Roku 4K that I had. Spotify started cutting the last six seconds off of each song on the Roku for some reason. Works fine on the PS5.

I've got two Roku Ultras, a Roku Stick, and a TCL Roku TV.

I'll occasionally watch something on my desktop PC. And, rarely, I'll watch a movie on my VR headset.
