jms Comments on Whedon and Sorkin

He dropped by a discussion in the B5 newsgroup about ultimate writer pairings:

Actually, I think that Joss is perhaps one of the best writers working right now; I'd put his work up alongside Sorkin any day of the week (who may be the best of us at the moment). If the prospect ever came along, and if our schedules ever coincided (probably the more difficult aspect of the whole thing, given his and my workload), I'd love to work with Joss on something.

jms
One thing I'll always admire about jms is his unfailing ability to recognize quality in other people's work, not just his own. Good to see his top 2 writers in television are consistent with mine.

J. Michael Straczynski. Creater of Babylon 5. My favorite thing in the whole universe.

Well, second favorite...

das, are you reading any of JMS's comic writing at the moment? A buddy of mine conned me into picking up "Midnight Nation" at the local Atlanta comicon this past weekend.

I am not. I plan to, but time is short. I did pick up Delicate Creatures when that came out and it was pretty good. It's kind of life a fairy tale with an adult perspective. I liked it. I would like to start in on Midnight Nation, but I just haven't had the time yet.

Well, I got a Midnight Nation 1-8 pack for $10, so it was a no-brainer.

I have really been enjoying jms's run on Amazing Spider-Man. Definetly a breath of fresh air for that title. Haven't been able to pick up his original comic series. Guess I need too.

das, I agree with everything you said about jms - he's a fantastic writer in his own right, but it's so wonderful to see someone nice enough to admire quality writing by others. And I too think that they are the top 3.

As to the comics, I read Midnight Nation, Rising Stars, and now the work jms has done on Spidey. One of my good friends buys them for me each month and saves up a bunch then gives them to me on my b-day each year. He also keeps up with everything jms does and makes sure I know when stuff is coming out, when it airs, etc. I've never heard of Delicate Creatures, though - I'll have to check it out.

Will anyone be watching the new show Jeremiah with Luke Perry?

I believe J. Michael Straczynski is the creator of this one. I'm not familiar with any of his previous work, but I wouldn't mind watching a product of his from the first show if you think it will be worth it.

Well, 8 episodes have already aired. I started threads for each of the first few, but they sank like bricks so I dropped it. It's a pretty good show with excellent ratings (increases from the lead-in of SG-1 and increases by the quarter hour). It would be a little weird to pick it up now, but I'm sure Showtime will air them all at some point.

Since I don't get Showtime, I'm hoping for syndication. The only totally independent (2-13) LA station runs Outer Limits (and I think Invisible Man), SG-1 plays on Fox, got Lost World, Jules Vern, and some others around, too.

Or I could get off my dead ass and get DirecTV.

I simply don't watch much TV on Saturday nights, so that's why I haven't given Jeremiah a shot.

I timeshift everything, so I watch Jeremiah too. I agree with das - it's a good show, though not B5 caliber imho. But I don't know that I want to keep paying for showtime just for it - pretty expensive show for me to watch.

Wait long enough and you will see it for free on the regular channels. Anyone hear any news on the possible Ranger spin off?

Jerimiah is a excellent show and the last episode Firewall was just like B5's signs and portents. Shifted the course of the show. Great episode.

You might want to try Friday night's when Jermiah is actually on, or Sunday's when it's re-run. 8)

from what I hear, it's totally dead. Sad. Although the movie did have some problems, I would have liked to see what jms did with it.

I'm upset since I didn't realize Jeremiah was on 15 min early this week and I missed the beginning. Uggh. They aren't repeating any yet.

You should give The Chris Isaak Show a chance, even if you don't enjoy his music. It's a very entertaining show and helps validate the cost of the channel. It's probably the only thing Showtime has that is HBO caliber in terms of quality.
