3/6 President Bush News Conference 8:00PM (EST)

Just a heads up for those who want to watch it or for those who tape/tivo shows tonight. Not sure if all the networks will cover it or what they'll do with their regular lineup of shows (delay/preempt?)

Why don't they do these things (especially since this is not supposed to be any we haven't already heard) during the evening network news broadcasts or at 7:30.

I think everything was a rerun except maybe Good Morning Miami which I think is now coming on at 10pm according to www.NBC.com.
Good Morning Miami THE BIG LEAP 10pm 2003-03-06 ALL NEW!

Spoiler:
In an attempt to increase the ratings on the show, Jake (Mark Feuerstein) persuades Gavin (Matt Letscher) to "tandem skydive" with an overly enthusiastic Frank (Jere Burns) -- not realizing that Frank has a hidden agenda. Elsewhere, Jake also tries to reconcile his relationship with Penny (Constance Zimmer) when he sees her dating another guy while Claire (Suzanne Pleshette) invites Dylan (Ashley Williams) out for what seems to be an innocent night of dinner and drinks. Tom Poston ("Newhart") guest-stars and Peter Bonerz ("The Bob Newhart Show") directs the episode.

What a horrible speech he just kept repeating the same stuff over and over again. Then there was that embarrassing gaffe where he admitted the whole thing was scripted. Why bother calling it a press conference if you have the questions in advance and prepare scripted answers to them?

He didn't asnwer any of the questions by Terry Moran about why the rest of the world opposes this invasion and they think his administartion is arrogant and out of control..

He is the threat to world peace IMO..and stop using 9/11 to justify this attack..It's sickening!!

I don't remeber hims saying it was scripted. when did he say that. I agree that it wasn't one of his most prepared speeches, but that is one thing that i really like about him is that it seems that he is a very downhome and honest person who isn't posturing at every single moment in the public eye. He is very personable.

But yeah it does seem like we are going to war. it seemed almost like that was our warning.

question for tivo/disc recorders does it automatically know that there will be a press conference and adjust accordingly or do you have to set it manually.

It wasn't a gaffe. It was a joke. The press doesn't submit questions to him in advance. But he does have people working for him who can anticipate what questions will be asked. If someone asks a question that goes down those lines, then that is the answer he gives.

Of course he kept repeating the same things over and over gaon. It's called a "Theme".

It wouldn't be very diplomatic to give the real answer which is that it isn't in those Nations best interests for us to be safe andsecure. It wasn't their cities that were attacked.

Why do you think he is the real threat to world peace? You must believe that either Hussein doesn't have weapons of Mass destruction and continued inspections will verify that, or he does have them and continued inspections will eventually reveal them.

The first belief is naive. The second is reasonable. However, it is also reasonable to believe that Hussein will sucessfully keep shuffling these weapons about, keep stalling, and Inspectors will never find them. If you believe that, then it's also reasonable to beive that he will continue to aid terrorists organisations.

It is my opinion that he will keep hiding the weapons and eventually they will find their way to my enemies. Because of that, I believe the cost of inaction significantly outweighs the cost of action.

My DirecTiVo, which receives data constantly from the satellite (unlike a standalone TiVo or Replay that only receives data during the daily call) didn't adjust at all. Through the press conference, it listed the show title as "Profiles from the Front Lines". I watched it on ABC obviously.

This press conference was called pretty hastily, like the very day of Thursday, so most PVRs (Tivos, ReplayTVs) had no time to update their schedule info, so everyone is messed for Thursday night if they recorded anything on the usual networks that carried the press conference.

Exactly - he's a politician that's what they do. They give vague responses and repeat themselves continuously. Every politician does it - not just Bush.

I also thought he was joking when he mentioned that it was scripted, because if that was scripted, it was put together very poorly. It looked to me like it was thrown together that day - and it was. I will admit that GWB is getting better, and in the process more comfortable, at giving speeches. He has come a long way since his run for office. He is not the best presenter, but he is improving continually.

Replays download the schedules overnight so if something like this comes up the same day, it can't adjust.

Luckily there wasn't anything on last night (except "Night of Zero Laughs, Part II" ), so I just overscheduled around Survivor by 1:15, figuring that should be enough. I recorded other things last night, but none of those stations broadcast national addresses, so it didn't matter.

As for why they wait until 8pm for these things, that's "Prime Time" for a reason. If you need to address the American people, that's the best time to get as many people as possible. I'm certainly not watching network TV before then.

I know that is the reason - however for a press conference like this (where nothing of substance is said), it makes no sense.

I really should think about moving to the west coast. Don't have to worry about crap like this.

I fast-forwarded it on my ReplayTV and I was imitating him "We're going to war, we don't care what anyone else thinks...Saddam is evil...God Bless America...blah, blah, blah"

I knew he wasn't saying anything different.

Did anybody count how many times he said "Weapons of Mass Destruction," "Disarm," or "Saddam Hussein?" That would have been the ultimate drinking game!

Since this is a bit of a Bush bashing thread...

Bush is trying to figure out what to do for the country and in a dream george washington comes to him and bush asks him what to do to help the country he tells him "to be more like me". So the next night thomas jefferson comes to bush in a dream and bush asks what he could do to help the country jefferson says "live off the fruit of the land and stay out of foreign affairs". so the next night Ab lincoln comes to bush and bush asks him whats the best thing for him to do for the country and lincoln replies "Go see a play"

There seems to be a lot of excuse-making for Bush. "It was a joke," "It was hastily put together," "It was a theme," "He;s better than he was in the election..."

The man is not a good public speaker, period. And the fact that he rarely calls press conferences separates him further from the American people. And whether or not it was scripted, the press should have dug in more with pressing questions. He avoided the answers, yes, but just because all politicians do it doesn't mean our president should not answer what is probably the biggest question being asked by anyone who knows what's going on right now.

Notice how he used the phrase "my government," and other self-referential word choices? I thought it was OUR government.

Yes, we're going to war, but it's a financial issue. We've spent too much money to save face now. And I agree that 9/11 is being overused. It's a tragedy, stop using it as an excuse for everything unconstitutional.

add to the "WMD" tallies 12 references to 9/11 - TWELVE!!!!!! On a night where Iraq is the main subject? Gee, and we wonder why half of the country thinks Iraq was responsible for the Towers attack

That was truly a pathetic excuse to grandstand and spout hyperbole under the guise of a press conference. He didn't answer any one of the questions....not one. As I mentioned elsewhere, the lowest was in response to a question about how much a war with Iraq will cost - he babbled for a bit and then hit upon the stunner: "how do you measure the cost of 3,000 Americans" in reference to 9/11. McWHAT!?!?!?!!? that has to do with the cost of INVADING IRAQ HOW? Truly deplorable.

And i find it curious that the supposedly "liberal media" has all but moved on and seems to be ignoring it today....

Yep... that was the most repeated foot-in-mouth idiocy of the whole thing imo. Embarassing.

Where do all of these media pundits get their numbers of support from "The American People?" Without UN backing even their own surveys indicate most are against the war. Yet, the pundits right and left all talk about 'overwhelming support.' Did they have brain tumors for breakfast?
