Enterprise 04/30/03

Episode Title: 'Cogenitor'

Spoiler:
While studying a star in the early stages of going supernova, Enterprise encounters a race called the Vissians. The two crews get along famously, until Trip Tucker gets a little too curious about a member of the species' third gender — a nameless individual called a 'cogenitor.'"

As I've said before......"based on the above, it should come as little shock who wrote the script"

Written By: Rick Berman & Brannon Braga
Directed By: LeVar Burton

I love how everyone bashes things before seeing them.... *sigh*

Personally, I thought this was a good ep. And it's about damn time that Archer showed some backbone. The lecture he nailed Trip with was so totally deserved. And Trip just needed a good smack.

I'm sure you can't wait for Junior Idol this summer.

And some of the people who've seen the episode said it was pretty good and could be a turnabout point for the series, so just watch it and go in with an open mind. The past few episodes have been pretty good, except "The Crossing".

One thing I can say: I always have an open mind when I come into any episode. I've been mainly disappointed after a lot of episodes, but still start fresh each week (it doesn't help my Enterprise viewing when I just finished with Season 2 of DS9 on DVD).

It's just that nagging "Written by" line this week that doesn't give me a lot of hope............

I didn't see anyone bash the episode before seeing it. They're bashing the writers of the episode who have such a flawless history of writing complete crap that anticipations of further crap are only logical. That being said, I can still watch with an open mind and will do so as I do every week.

I just don't think that B&B should write together. Looking back at Brannon Braga's work, he did some spectacular episodes for TNG and some of the best of Voyager.

Even Berman, who wrote a few TNG episodes, wrote some pretty good ones.

It's just that together, it's like they push all their creativity aside and allow crap to flow for some reason.

I thought the episode was really good. It had a really strong ending and showed that they can't just go around jacking up people's societies with repercussion.

Oh, G’Kar: did you run out of fishies?

After just about an hour of an uneven episode that looked as if it was put together by committee, I was surprised with the conclusion, pleasantly so. At least until the writers had Archer open his mouth to utter, “I guess that’ll teach you a lesson.” &, not to forget

It had potential. Then they started writing it.

I wonder if Malcolm actually got some? I would bet not.

(1) I thought the ending was okay. It was a bit preachy, but Archer was giving his point of view, and Trip couldn't really talk back to his superior officer.

(2) His subplot was oddly dropped, wasn't it? Would have been interesting to learn if it was possible for the aliens to have (non-reproductive) sex w/o a cogenitor.

I think Archer was just incredibly disappointed with himself and Trip was incredibly disappointed with himself.

Even though Trip probably will always think what he did was right, he has to live with the fact that his interference led to her death. So Archer couldn't punish him since anything would pale in comparison to his guilt already.

At first I thought Enterprise ran into a Narn ship when I heard G'Kar's voice over the comm.

I guess it didn't completely suck, just for the fact Trip learned a lesson. But, it reminded me quite a bit of TNG's "The Outcast".

The only thing I truly enjoyed was the fact the Vissians didn't have a sinister ulterior motive as is the case with most Trek aliens that make nicey-nice at first.

Oh, and seeing Andreas Katsulas back in the Trek-verse again.

Shame on UPN for once again appealing to the lowest-common denominator by advertising this as nothing but a comedy sex romp.

I was pleasantly surprised by this episode. Definitely one of the better ones for the series. I think they could have done without Archer's lecture though - he needs to look in a mirror.

I like how the (in what I presume to be the product of the universal translator) cogenitor is referred to as 'it.' I'm sure the Vissians have a proper word for the 3rd gender but 'it' would be the best translation of such a term since we have no frame of reference.

I actually liked the episode as well. I didn't think the ending speech was preachy, Archer was pissed and wanted to let Trip know it.

I had the same G'Kar thought at the beginning. I was thinking, isn't it a bit late for B5 crossovers?

For those of you following the prime directive thread, you gotta wonder if the prime directive came about because of some dumba$$ thing Trip did (or will do).

Ok - how exactly did Tripp learn his lesson?

There were absolutely no consequences doled out as a result of his meddling. Archer scowled a bit and went on a way-too-long and way-too-circular speach about how he was disappointed with Tripp - but there were no consequences to Tripp's actions whatsoever. No demotion in rank. No court martial. No punishment of ANY KIND!

What the hell?

And what did happen to Malcolm and his space babe? It's not usually like Trek to completely drop a subplot.

If B&B knew anything about Trek, that would be an interesting question.

Again with the transporters. Ignoring the comment about how we wouldn't want to take a ride on the transporter (and just why is that, Mr. Trip?), evidently even advanced races don't make use of them, and instead use docking tubes. Why, oh why, did they even bother to include that scene?

While I agree, he didn't get a Starfleet lesson, I was referring to a personal one.

I would certainly learn a pretty powerful lesson if my actions indirectly caused the death of another person.

Is "personal lesson" code for "big red re-set button?"

'Cuz that was pretty much the effect of this no-consequence wrap-up to the episode.

*push*

Next episode, Tripp's right back in his good graces with the Cap, doling out his re-fried Southern witticisms - huh-yuck, huh-yuck - again.

Can't break up the sacred "Enterprise" trinity formula.

Maybe - and it's a very possible "maybe" - we'll get some backhanded reference to Tripp's guilt over domesticating the mongoloid - er, I mean, humanizing the cogenitor. But that's all that Tripp's "lesson" will ever be.

Oh, and next we get the Borg?

Excuse me while I nut myself with - uh - joy.

Archer should have demoted Tripp to ensign and kept him that way for about a year. A story arc like that would make this show alot more interesting to me.

Borg next week? Yawn.

Supports my distaste for the Buffy morality speech.

How much of an impact would the scene have if Archer just delivered the news that “it” offed itself and no more talk. Cut to look of horror on Trip’s face. Roll credits.

Let the “lesson” be learned by those [in the audience] who wish something thought provoking rather than having everything spelled out.

Hmm?

"...while I nut myself?"
