ER -- "Out Of Africa" 10.30.2003

Out Of Africa

Bob Newhart begins a three-episode role as an ailing architect whose gradual loss of vision touches a nerve in Lewis. Meanwhile, the rest of County is thrown off by a staggering backlog of patients; an alcoholic mother's grisly reaction to losing custody of her children; the arrival of a new nurse (Linda Cardellini); and Abby's career switch. Coop: Glenn Howerton.
This was a pretty good epsiode. Morris really got on my nerves. I'm glad he's gone. I second Static's statement from last weeks thread: Give Gallant a storyline already...damn.

I'm liking Coop more. And Sam....

Morris did suck - definitely glad to see him leave. Coop is a good - I like the character.

Finally, Abby is back finishing up med. school.

Sam(antha) Taggart - me likes you already - take off your shoes and stay awhile.

and one more thing - Kovac freakin' rules.

I liked this episode better than others lately. I like the new nurse, I'm glad they finally put Abby back in med school so that maybe she'll quit mopping around, and (as was said before), very little Weaver

Romano He was on a roll again tonight.

Less Weaver, Pratt, Chen, and Abby

I liked Linda Cardellini's character. Good to have Kovac back also.

This was an pretty interesting and good episode. Great to see a lot less of Weaver and nice to see Chen absent for a change!

And Morris, please, guy didn't want to be a doctor in the first place. Glad he flew the coop!

Great to see Kovac back though.

Forgot to mention that Sam, from far away looked almost liked Abby.

Let's hope the show is back on track after the last two horrible episodes. So happy to see Morris gone. He was a whiner, an idiot, and a coward. Too bad he didn't take his buddy with him.

I guess the new nurse is sticking around for a while, they showed some backstory for her. Although, I am getting a little tired of a new character coming into chaos, getting involved somehow, and everyone asking, "Who are you?" "I'm the new ______"

Naked burned boobies =

This is how I would've written part of tonight's show:

(Boy plays with drumstick)
Neela: "Do you play the drums?"
Boy: "No, my dad hasn't moved all his stuff out yet."
Neela: "Oh, is that your magic wand?"
(Boy stabs Neela through the eye with drumstick.)
Fade out.

Honk!

Wow. I didn't foresee the mom going all Buddhist monk. Although I'm not sure if that was worse, or Morris cracking the teeth of that lady was worse. Ugh, what a sound.

Romano shattering the vial...

I was so glad I didn't pay much attention to the ER promos (because when the drunk mom lit herself up, I was surprised she was going that far because I thought she was just trying to get some more booze out of the car).

Bob Newhart's appearance will lead into a few more, and I guess Susan is taking the lead on his case. Susan had a rough day at the ER.

Sam Taggart - Mmmm... me likes alot. I didn't realize Linda Cardellini was going to be a regular (had to back up the opening credits twice to see her after Parminder Nagra to make sure). But Sam had quite the opening introduction scene, and she appears to be battle-tested from her previous stints at other hospitals.

Romano was really giving Abby a hard time, but you'd expect it from Romano because he's so hard/cruel on the nurses anyhow. Abby looked weird in doctor garb. I liked her better as the nurse that usually knew more than most of the interns/students.

I hope we never see Morris again. He reminds me of Osten from Survivor - a quitter that didn't need to be there.

And yes, Kovach is the man. His time in the Congo taught him a lot about triage patient management.

Corday got blindsided when it was revealed in the middle of surgery that Dorset is married.

(edited to correct spelling)

I also thought she was going to the car to get a "bottle".
That fire scene was quite horrific.

Does he really look that old in real life now, or did they "old" him up? Those jowls looked fairly hideous.

Sam Taggart - Mmmm... me likes alot. I didn't realize Linda Cardellini was going to be a regular (had to back up the opening credits twice to see her after Parfinder Nagra to make sure). Yup, Sam looks good. As soon as I saw her I thought..."Looks like they are introducing a new babe"

I liked Abby best in her "naughty nurse" uniform from that one episode. Was that a Halloween show? I forget.

I hope we never see Morris again. He reminds me of Osten from Survivor - a quitter that didn't need to be there.

Good riddance to Morris.

And yes, Kovach is the man. His time in the Congo taught him a lot about triage patient management.

He was excellent last night. Really took charge there in triage, which was good to see because his character was becoming a bit annoying at times prior to the Africa storyline.

Corday got blindsided when it was revealed in the middle of surgery that Dorset is married.

Really. And what was that comment Dorset made to the nurse that came in with the phone message ansd spilled the beans?
Something about Miss Mouth?

I almost gave up on the show after last week's episode, but this one definately restored some faith in me.
I'm also glad Morris is gone; he was a big p*$$y. And I'm apparently in the minority, but I like Neela and Coop.
My biggest gripe is Romano's character. I'm getting tired on listening to him be an ass every week.
They hopefully solved one of my pet peeves in this episode. Sure, it's realistic to show how triage tends to get backed up, but the last few episodes have played the disgruntled patient card way too much. Maybe Kovac's method wll be used now and we won't have to hear anymore patients complaining week to week about it.

The Dorset story arc is about the truest hospital related story line they have had on there in a long time. Dr and nurses are always screwing each other, especially interns, residnets and students.

I personally know 4 docs that are cheating on their spouses w/ other hospital employees, one's mistress is cheating on her spouse with the doc.

Good to see Abby back in med school, I just wish that Abby would have shot Rocket down like Coop did previously.

I haven't watched ER regularly since Weaver showed up. I only tuned in this time for Newhart. It was a pretty good show, but probably more for the lack of Weaver than the addition of Newhart

I watched last season when Don Cheadle was on during sweeps, so I'll probably do the same with Newhart and Weaver will drive me away again.

I'm wondering..now that Kovac has come back from his "reboot", he told Weaver he's leaving in two months. I'm thinking either Luca's leaving...or he's gonna go back and get Carter. I'm hoping it's the latter.

I dunno... this show is still watchable, and I never miss an episode.

But it is definitely floundering right now. It seems to be in the awkward position of having:

(a) Too MANY characters to give much depth to them

and

(b) Too FEW characters that I actually care about.

Maybe they can pull this together... but I'm really getting the sense that they are on autopilot. Randomly adding a bunch of new twentysomethings to the cast in the hopes of keeping it alive.

Glad Morris is gone. Useless character.
Neela doesn't seem to be doing much except look concerned and/or sad.
I'm really liking Coop. Reminiscent of "Dr. Dave" Malucci. They need a "cool" doctor character like that in there.
As for Sam....I'd hit it.

LOVED IT! This episode harkened back to the first season when the show was about the patients. And not the soap opera love fest between all the docs and nurses it is now.

So if Abbey becomes a surgeon we will only see her every now and then like Alex Kingstons character, right?

Less Pratt and Chen was good. Although I was waiting for him to start hitting on Sam. Speaking of, is this the chick that was supposed to be Maria Bello from the last thread? She may shape up to be a good character.

Kovach has never been a favorite of mine, but after the past few episodes, he was the rock of the E.R. Very nice change. It would be nice to have his character grow like that after Africa. Leave the drunken womanizing ways behind him. Put him in charge and have him be the lead instead of Carter. Poor Noah looks to young to take seriously as someone in charge.

Yes, people mistook Sam for Maria Bello. They shared similar hairstyles/color.

I don't know if Abby will be a surgeon, vs. more of a Kovach-type of "all-in-one" general practitioner of emergency medicine.

I think this is the second time i've read this sentiment. I'm in the middle of the Season One set, and I can't figure out what you're talking about. In fact, I think there's even MORE of a soap opera aspect to it since even the NURSES are more prominently featured. [ex: Haleh getting into Benton's face for not giving a gangbanger a pep talk.]

BTW...exactly what did happen to Haleh, Lydia & Connie..? I think I blinked and missed something...
